A roadmap for Antarctic and Southern Ocean science for the next two decades and beyond
Mahlon C. Kennicutt,Steven L. Chown,John J. Cassano,Daniela Liggett,Lloyd S. Peck,Robert A. Massom,Stephen R. Rintoul,John W. V. Storey,David G. Vaughan,Terry J. Storey,Michael Sparrow,Diana H. Wall,Jessica C. Walsh,Gary S. Wilson,Jan-Gunnar Winther,José C. Xavier,H. Yang,William J. Sutherland +74 more
TL;DR: A co-ordinated portfolio of cross-disciplinary science, based on new models of international collaboration, will be essential as no scientist, programme or nation can realize these aspirations alone.
Journal ArticleDOI
Genetic and morphological divergences in the cosmopolitan deep-sea amphipod Eurythenes gryllus reveal a diverse abyss and a bipolar species.
Charlotte Havermans,Charlotte Havermans,Gontran Sonet,Cédric d'Udekem d'Acoz,Zoltán T. Nagy,Patrick Martin,Saskia Brix,Torben Riehl,Shobhit Agrawal,Christoph Held +9 more
TL;DR: The results indicate that, despite the more uniform environment of the abyss and its presumed lack of obvious isolating barriers, abyssal populations might be more likely to show population differentiation and undergo speciation events than previously assumed.
Journal ArticleDOI
Patterns, processes and vulnerability of Southern Ocean benthos: a decadal leap in knowledge and understanding
Stefanie Kaiser,Simone N. Brandão,Saskia Brix,David K. A. Barnes,David A. Bowden,Jeroen Ingels,Florian Leese,Stefano Schiaparelli,Claudia P. Arango,Renuka Badhe,Narissa Bax,Magdalena Błażewicz-Paszkowycz,Angelika Brandt,Nils Brenke,Anna I. Catarino,Bruno David,Chantal De Ridder,Philippe Dubois,Kari E. Ellingsen,Adrian G. Glover,Huw J. Sands,Anna Soler-Membrives,Myriam Schüller,Jan M. Strugnell,Ann Vanreusel,Gritta Veit-Köhler,Nerida G. Wilson,Nerida G. Wilson,Moriaki Yasuhara +39 more
TL;DR: This paper evaluates recent progress in Southern Ocean benthic research and identifies priorities for future research, including timely and accurate species identifications, application of standardized sampling and reporting procedures, as well as cooperation between disciplines and nations.
Journal ArticleDOI
DNA barcoding reveals new insights into the diversity of Antarctic species of Orchomene sensu lato (Crustacea: Amphipoda: Lysianassoidea)
Charlotte Havermans,Charlotte Havermans,Zoltán T. Nagy,Gontran Sonet,C. De Broyer,Patrick Martin +5 more
TL;DR: A DNA barcoding approach based on mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I gene sequences was used in order to detect possible cryptic diversity and to test the circumpolarity of some lysianassoid species.
Journal ArticleDOI
Future challenges in southern ocean ecology research
José C. Xavier,José C. Xavier,Angelika Brandt,Yan Ropert-Coudert,Renuka Badhe,Julian Gutt,Charlotte Havermans,Charlotte Havermans,Christopher D. Jones,Erli Schneider Costa,Karin Lochte,Irene R. Schloss,Irene R. Schloss,Mahlon C. Kennicutt,William J. Sutherland,William J. Sutherland +15 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors assess high-interest research areas related specifically to Southern Ocean life and ecology that, although not all retained as the 80 top priorities among the addressed scientific domains, are of considerable relevance to the biology and ecology of the Southern Ocean.
