Journal ArticleDOI
Increased levels of IL-6 in the cerebrospinal fluid of patients with chronic schizophrenia--significance for activation of the kynurenine pathway.
Lilly Schwieler,Markus K. Larsson,Elisabeth Skogh,Magdalena E. Kegel,Funda Orhan,Sally Abdelmoaty,Anja Finn,Maria Bhat,Martin Samuelsson,Kristina Lundberg,Marja-Liisa Dahl,Carl M. Sellgren,Ina Schuppe-Koistinen,Camilla I. Svensson,Sophie Erhardt,Göran Engberg +15 more
TL;DR: It is suggested that IL-6 induces the KYN pathway, leading to increased production of the N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor antagonist KYNA in patients with schizophrenia.
Journal ArticleDOI
Adaptive and Behavioral Changes in Kynurenine 3-Monooxygenase Knockout Mice: Relevance to Psychotic Disorders
Sophie Erhardt,Ana Pocivavsek,Mariaelena Repici,Xi-Cong Liu,Sophie Imbeault,Daniel C. Maddison,Marian A. R. Thomas,Joshua L. Smalley,Markus K. Larsson,Paul J. Muchowski,Flaviano Giorgini,Robert Schwarcz +11 more
TL;DR: Results demonstrate that the elimination of Kmo in mice is associated with multiple gene and functional alterations that appear to duplicate aspects of the psychopathology of several neuropsychiatric disorders.
Journal ArticleDOI
Behavioral disturbances in adult mice following neonatal virus infection or kynurenine treatment--role of brain kynurenic acid.
Xi-Cong Liu,Maria Holtze,Susan B. Powell,Niccolò Terrando,Markus K. Larsson,Anna Persson,Sara K. Olsson,Funda Orhan,Magdalena E. Kegel,Linnéa Asp,Michel Goiny,Lilly Schwieler,Göran Engberg,Håkan Karlsson,Sophie Erhardt +14 more
TL;DR: Enhanced sensitivity to D-amphetamine-induced increase in locomotor activity as well as mild impairments in prepulse inhibition and memory suggest that the kynurenine pathway can link early-life infection with the development of neuropsychiatric disturbances in adulthood.
Journal ArticleDOI
Inhibition of kynurenine aminotransferase II reduces activity of midbrain dopamine neurons.
Klas R. Linderholm,Maximilian Tufvesson Alm,Markus K. Larsson,Sara K. Olsson,Michel Goiny,Mihály Hajós,Sophie Erhardt,Göran Engberg +7 more
TL;DR: The results show that a specific inhibition of KAT II is associated with a marked reduction in VTA DA firing activity, which appears to be specifically executed by NMDA-receptors and mediated indirectly via a GABA(B)-receptor-induced disinhibition of DA neurons.
Journal ArticleDOI
Subchronic elevation of brain kynurenic acid augments amphetamine-induced locomotor response in mice
TL;DR: It is found that an acute increase in the brain KYNA levels caused increased corner time and percent peripheral activity but did not change the d- methamphetamine-induced locomotor response, while subchronic elevation of KYNA produced an exaggerated d-amphetamine-induced hyperlocomotion.
