Journal ArticleDOI
Comprehensive validation of cardiovascular magnetic resonance techniques for the assessment of myocardial extracellular volume.
Christopher A. Miller,Josephine H. Naish,Paul N. Bishop,Glyn Coutts,David Clark,Sha Zhao,Simon Ray,Nizar Yonan,Simon G. Williams,Andrew S. Flett,James C. Moon,Andreas Greiser,Geoffrey J. M. Parker,Matthias Schmitt +13 more
TL;DR: DynEq-CMR–derived ECV shows a good correlation with histological collagen volume fraction throughout the whole heart, and varied significantly according to contrast dose, myocardial region, and sex.
Journal ArticleDOI
Late Gadolinium Enhancement and the Risk for Ventricular Arrhythmias or Sudden Death in Dilated Cardiomyopathy: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.
Andrea Di Marco,Ignasi Anguera,Matthias Schmitt,Igor Klem,Tomas G. Neilan,James A. White,Marek Sramko,Pier Giorgio Masci,Andrea Barison,Peter Mckenna,Ify Mordi,Kristina H. Haugaa,Francisco Leyva,Jorge Rodriguez Capitán,Hiroshi Satoh,Takeru Nabeta,Paolo Dallaglio,Niall G. Campbell,Xavier Sabaté,Angel Cequier +19 more
TL;DR: Across a wide spectrum of patients with DCM, LGE is strongly and independently associated with ventricular arrhythmia or SCD, which raises 2 major questions to be addressed in future studies: whether patients with LGE could benefit from primary prevention I CDs irrespective of their left ventricular ejection fractions, while patients without LGE might not need preventive ICDs despite having severeleft ventricular dysfunction.
Journal ArticleDOI
Myocardial Fibrosis Quantified by Extracellular Volume Is Associated With Subsequent Hospitalization for Heart Failure, Death, or Both Across the Spectrum of Ejection Fraction and Heart Failure Stage
Erik B. Schelbert,Kayla Piehler,Karolina M. Zareba,James C. Moon,Martin Ugander,Daniel Messroghli,Uma Valeti,Chung-Chou H. Chang,Sanjeev G. Shroff,Javier Díez,Christopher A. Miller,Matthias Schmitt,Peter Kellman,Javed Butler,Mihai Gheorghiade,Timothy C. Wong +15 more
TL;DR: MF measured by ECV is associated with hospitalization for heart failure, death, or both and may represent a principal phenotype of cardiac vulnerability that improves risk stratification.
Journal ArticleDOI
Endothelin-1 regulates arterial pulse wave velocity in vivo
Carmel M. McEniery,Ahmad Qasem,Matthias Schmitt,Alberto Avolio,John R. Cockcroft,Ian B. Wilkinson +5 more
TL;DR: It is demonstrated, for the first time, that endogenous ET-1 production directly regulates large artery PWV in vivo, and drugs that block ET(A) receptors may be effective in reducing large artery stiffness in humans, and thus cardiovascular risk.
Journal ArticleDOI
Basal NO Locally Modulates Human Iliac Artery Function In Vivo
Matthias Schmitt,Albert Avolio,Ahmad Qasem,Carmel M. McEniery,Mark Butlin,Ian B. Wilkinson,John R. Cockcroft +6 more
TL;DR: The data indicate that under resting conditions, local NO production modulates human iliac artery distensibility and that exogenous NO increases arterialdistensibility.
