TL;DR: The Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) is an airborne observatory consisting of a specially modified Boeing 747SP with a 2.7 m telescope, flying at altitudes as high as 13.7 km (45,000 ft) as discussed by the authors.
Journal ArticleDOI
Co (j =7 !6) observations of ngc 253: cosmic-ray-heated warm molecular gas
Charles M. Bradford,Charles M. Bradford,Thomas Nikola,Gordon J. Stacey,Alberto D. Bolatto,James M. Jackson,James M. Jackson,Maureen L. Savage,Jacqueline A. Davidson,Sarah J.U. Higdon,Sarah J.U. Higdon +10 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the CO J = 7 → 6 transition toward the starburst nucleus of NGC 253 was observed and an estimate of the molecular gas excitation conditions was obtained.

Warm molecular gas traced with co j = 7 ¿ 6 in the galaxy's central 2 parsecs: dynamical heating of the circumnuclear disk
Charles M. Bradford,Charles M. Bradford,Gordon J. Stacey,Thomas Nikola,Alberto D. Bolatto,James M. Jackson,Maureen L. Savage,Jacqueline A. Davidson +7 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors present an 11" resolution map of the central 2 pc of the Galaxy in the CO J = 7 --> 6 rotational transition, where the CO emission shows rotation about Sgr A* but also evidence for noncircular turbulent motion and a clumpy morphology.

TL;DR: The Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) has recently concluded a set of engineering flights for observatory performance evaluation as discussed by the authors, which are viewed as the first comprehensive assessment of the observatory's performance and are used to guide future development activities, as well as to identify additional observatory upgrades.
