Journal ArticleDOI
Microbial temperature sensitivity and biomass change explain soil carbon loss with warming.
Tom W. N. Walker,Tom W. N. Walker,Christina Kaiser,Christina Kaiser,Florian Strasser,Craig W. Herbold,Niki I. W. Leblans,Niki I. W. Leblans,Dagmar Woebken,Ivan A. Janssens,Bjarni D. Sigurdsson,Andreas Richter,Andreas Richter +12 more
TL;DR: A framework is provided for interpreting the links between temperature, microbial activity and soil carbon loss on timescales relevant to Earth’s climate system via their control over microbial biomass.
Journal ArticleDOI
Sensitivity of soil carbon fractions and their specific stabilization mechanisms to extreme soil warming in a subarctic grassland
Christopher Poeplau,Thomas Kätterer,Niki I. W. Leblans,Niki I. W. Leblans,Bjarni D. Sigurdsson +4 more
TL;DR: The sensitivity of SOC to warming was not a function of age or chemical recalcitrance, but triggered by changes in biophysical stabilization mechanisms, such as aggregation.
Journal ArticleDOI

TL;DR: A minimum subset of variables that should be collected in all climate change studies to allow data re-use and synthesis, and guidance on additional variables critical for different types of synthesis and upscaling are recommended.
Journal ArticleDOI
Geothermal ecosystems as natural climate change experiments: the ForHot research site in Iceland as a case study
Bjarni D. Sigurdsson,Niki I. W. Leblans,Niki I. W. Leblans,Steven Dauwe,Steven Dauwe,Elín Guðmundsdóttir,Per Gundersen,Gunnhildur E. Gunnarsdottir,Martin Holmstrup,Krassimira Ilieva-Makulec,Thomas Kätterer,Bryndís Marteinsdóttir,Marja Maljanen,Edda Sigurdís Oddsdóttir,Ivika Ostonen,Josep Peñuelas,Christopher Poeplau,Andreas Richter,Páll Sigurðsson,Peter M. van Bodegom,Håkan Wallander,James T. Weedon,Ivan A. Janssens +22 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors describe how natural geothermal soil temperature gradients in Iceland have been used to study terrestrial ecosystem responses to soil warming, and the experimental approach was evaluated at three study sites in southern Iceland; one grassland site that has been warm for at least 50 years (GO), and another comparable grassland sites (GN) and a Sitka spruce plantation (FN) site that have both been warmed since an earthquake took place in 2008.
Journal ArticleDOI
Patterns of local, intercontinental and interseasonal variation of soil bacterial and eukaryotic microbial communities
Johan De Gruyter,James T. Weedon,James T. Weedon,Stéphane Bazot,Steven Dauwe,Pere Roc Fernandez-Garberí,Stefan Geisen,Louis Gourlez de la Motte,Bernard Heinesch,Ivan A. Janssens,Niki I. W. Leblans,Tanguy Manise,Romà Ogaya,Mikaell Ottosson Löfvenius,Josep Peñuelas,Bjarni D. Sigurdsson,Gaëlle Vincent,Erik Verbruggen +17 more
TL;DR: It is concluded that temporal variation can be considerable in soil microbial communities, and that future studies need to consider temporal variation in order to reliably capture all drivers of soil microbiome changes.
