TL;DR: The 4 overarching principles and 10 recommendations are based on stronger evidence than before and are supposed to inform patients, rheumatologists and other stakeholders about strategies to reach optimal outcomes of RA.
Journal ArticleDOI
Comparison of combination therapy with single-drug therapy in early rheumatoid arthritis: a randomised trial
Timo Möttönen,Pekka Hannonen,Marjatta Leirisalo-Repo,M. Nissilä,Hannu Kautiainen,Markku Korpela,Leena Laasonen,Julkunen H,Reijo Luukkainen,Kaisa Vuori,Leena Paimela,Harri Blåfield,M Hakala,Kirsti Ilva,U Yli-Kerttula,Kari Puolakka,Pentti Jarvinen,M Hakola,H Piirainen,Jari Ahonen,Ilppo Pälvimäki,Sinikka Forsberg,K. Koota,C. Friman +23 more
TL;DR: Combination therapy was better and not more hazardous than single treatment in induction of remission in early rheumatoid arthritis, and the combination strategy as an initial therapy seems to increase the efficacy of the treatment in at least a proportion of patients with early r HEA.
Journal ArticleDOI
Delay to institution of therapy and induction of remission using single-drug or combination-disease-modifying antirheumatic drug therapy in early rheumatoid arthritis.
Timo Möttönen,Pekka Hannonen,Markku Korpela,M. Nissilä,Hannu Kautiainen,Jorma Ilonen,Leena Laasonen,Oili Kaipiainen-Seppänen,Per Franzen,T. Helve,Juhani M. Koski,Marianne Gripenberg-Gahmberg,Riitta Myllykangas-Luosujärvi,Marjatta Leirisalo-Repo +13 more
TL;DR: The delay of a few months from the onset of symptoms to institution of therapy decreases the ability of the traditional single-drug strategy to induce remission in early RA.
Journal ArticleDOI
Retardation of joint damage in patients with early rheumatoid arthritis by initial aggressive treatment with disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs : five-year experience from the FIN-RACo study
Markku Korpela,Leena Laasonen,Pekka Hannonen,Hannu Kautiainen,Marjatta Leirisalo-Repo,M Hakala,Leena Paimela,Harri Blåfield,Kari Puolakka,Timo Möttönen +9 more
TL;DR: The results confirm the earlier concept that triple therapy with combinations of DMARDs contributes to an improved long-term radiologic outcome in patients with early and clinically active RA.
Journal ArticleDOI
A randomized two-year study of the effects of dynamic strength training on muscle strength, disease activity, functional capacity, and bone mineral density in early rheumatoid arthritis
TL;DR: Regular dynamic strength training combined with endurance-type physical activities improves muscle strength and physical function, but not BMD, in patients with early RA, without detrimental effects on disease activity.
