Winds at the Phoenix landing site
C. Holstein-Rathlou,Haraldur P. Gunnlaugsson,Jonathan Merrison,K. M. Bean,Bruce A. Cantor,Jeffrey A. Davis,Richard Davy,Nathan B. Drake,M. D. Ellehoj,Walter Goetz,Stubbe F. Hviid,Carlos F. Lange,Søren Ejling Larsen,Mark T. Lemmon,Morten Madsen,Michael C. Malin,John E. Moores,Per Nørnberg,Peter H. Smith,L. K. Tamppari,Peter A. Taylor +20 more
TL;DR: In this paper, a mechanical anemometer, the so-called Telltale wind indicator, was used on the Phoenix Lander to measure wind speeds and directions on the Mars Color Imager.
Journal ArticleDOI
The electrical properties of Mars analogue dust
TL;DR: In this paper, the first measurements have been performed of dust electrification using suspended Mars analogue material, which has been achieved by attracting suspended dust onto electrodes placed inside a Mars simulation wind tunnel.
Journal ArticleDOI
Determination of the wind induced detachment threshold for granular material on Mars using wind tunnel simulations
Jonathan Merrison,Haraldur P. Gunnlaugsson,Per Nørnberg,Anna Eske Jensen,Keld Rømer Rasmussen +4 more
TL;DR: In this article, a simple force balance equation is applied to quantify the wind shear stress required for removal of glass spheres from a sand bed and the results agree well with observations of dust removal and wind speed measurements made by the NASA Viking landers at the martian surface.
Journal ArticleDOI
Magnetic properties experiments on the Mars exploration Rover Spirit at Gusev Crater.
P. Bertelsen,Walter Goetz,Morten Madsen,Kjartan M. Kinch,Stubbe F. Hviid,J. M. Knudsen,Haraldur P. Gunnlaugsson,Jonathan Merrison,Per Nørnberg,S. W. Squyres,James F. Bell,K. E. Herkenhoff,S. P. Gorevan,Albert S. Yen,T. Myrick,Göstar Klingelhöfer,Rudolf Rieder,Ralf Gellert +17 more
TL;DR: The magnetic properties experiments are designed to help identify the magnetic minerals in the dust and rocks on Mars—and to determine whether liquid water was involved in the formation and alteration of these magnetic minerals.
Journal ArticleDOI
A Comprehensive Investigation on Iron Cycling in a Freshwater Seep Including Microscopy, Cultivation and Molecular Community Analysis
TL;DR: By a combination of microscopy, cultivation and molecular investigations, the authors have been able to provide several lines of evidence for a tight coupling of biological iron reduction and oxidation in this iron-rich fresh water seep.
