Acquired Antibiotic Resistance Genes: An Overview
Angela H.A.M. van Hoek,Dik Mevius,Dik Mevius,Beatriz Guerra,Peter Mullany,Adam P. Roberts,Henk Aarts +6 more
TL;DR: Attention is paid to mobile genetic elements such as plasmids, transposons, and integrons, which are associated with AR genes, and involved in the dispersal of antimicrobial determinants between different bacteria.
Journal ArticleDOI
The multidrug-resistant human pathogen Clostridium difficile has a highly mobile, mosaic genome
Mohammed Sebaihia,Brendan W. Wren,Peter Mullany,Neil F. Fairweather,Nigel P. Minton,Richard A. Stabler,Nicholas R. Thomson,Adam P. Roberts,Ana Cerdeño-Tárraga,Hongmei Wang,Matthew T. G. Holden,Anne Wright,Carol Churcher,Michael A. Quail,Stephen Baker,Nathalie Bason,Karen Brooks,Tracey Chillingworth,Ann Cronin,Paul Davis,Linda Dowd,Audrey Fraser,Theresa Feltwell,Zahra Hance,S. Holroyd,Kay Jagels,Sharon Moule,Karen Mungall,Claire Price,Ester Rabbinowitsch,Sarah Sharp,Mark Simmonds,K. Stevens,Louise Unwin,Sally Whithead,Bruno Dupuy,Gordon Dougan,Bart Barrell,Julian Parkhill +38 more
TL;DR: The complete genome sequence of Clostridium difficile strain 630, a virulent and multidrug-resistant strain, is determined; it indicates that a large proportion (11%) of the genome consists of mobile genetic elements, mainly in the form of conjugative transposons.
Journal ArticleDOI
Generation of an erythromycin-sensitive derivative of Clostridium difficile strain 630 (630Δerm) and demonstration that the conjugative transposon Tn916ΔE enters the genome of this strain at multiple sites
TL;DR: An erythromycin-sensitive derivative of strain 630 (designated 630Deltaerm) was generated by spontaneous mutation after continuous subculture for 30 days, indicating that this element entered the genome at multiple sites indicating that it could be useful as an insertional mutagen.
Journal ArticleDOI
A modular master on the move: the Tn916 family of mobile genetic elements.
Adam P. Roberts,Peter Mullany +1 more
TL;DR: This family of mobile genetic elements has an extraordinary ability to acquire accessory genes, making them important vectors in the dissemination of various traits among environmental, commensal and clinical bacteria.
Journal ArticleDOI
Tn916‐like genetic elements: a diverse group of modular mobile elements conferring antibiotic resistance
Adam P. Roberts,Peter Mullany +1 more
TL;DR: It is possible that clinically relevant multidrug-resistant Clostridium difficile strains will appear in the future, as the organism is adept at acquiring mobile genetic elements (plasmids and transposons).
