The Theory of Island Biogeography

We consider 27 population and community terms used frequently by parasitologists when describing the ecology of parasites. We provide suggestions for various terms in an attempt to foster consistent use and to make terms used in parasite ecology easier to interpret for those who study free-living organisms. We suggest strongly that authors, whether they agree or disagree with us, provide complete and unambiguous definitions for all parameters of their studies.

The Cambridge Structural Database (CSD) contains a complete record of all published organic and metal–organic small-molecule crystal structures. The database has been in operation for over 50 years and continues to be the primary means of sharing structural chemistry data and knowledge across disciplines. As well as structures that are made public to support scientific articles, it includes many structures published directly as CSD Communications. All structures are processed both computationally and by expert structural chemistry editors prior to entering the database. A key component of this processing is the reliable association of the chemical identity of the structure studied with the experimental data. This important step helps ensure that data is widely discoverable and readily reusable. Content is further enriched through selective inclusion of additional experimental data. Entries are available to anyone through free CSD community web services. Linking services developed and maintained by the CCDC, combined with the use of standard identifiers, facilitate discovery from other resources. Data can also be accessed through CCDC and third party software applications and through an application programming interface.

This book is the second of two volumes in a series on terrestrial and marine comparisons, focusing on the temporal complement of the earlier spatial analysis of patchiness and pattern (Levin et al. 1993). The issue of the relationships among pattern, scale, and patchiness has been framed forcefully in John Steele’s writings of two decades (e.g., Steele 1978). There is no pattern without an observational frame. In the words of Nietzsche, “There are no facts… only interpretations.”

Most comparisons of the temperate floras of eastern North America and eastern Asia have addressed the systematic or floristic level. Data on vegetation pattern and structure, when present, have been broadly descriptive, with little detail on gradient relations or intercommunity pattern. Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the largest eastern temperate preserve of floristic diversity in the United States, lies near the center of development of the North American deciduous forest. The flora of this park was used to model the gradient distributions and ecological characteristics of species with east Asian near-relatives. The disjunct taxa (162 species or 13 percent of the flora) were a highly nonrandom assortment of the native flora (total = 1,21 1 species) as a whole: they were more likely to be primitive in phylogenetic standing, perennial, and woody. They were also non-randomly distributed among habitats, being more likely to be found on exclusively terrestrial, forested, and mesic sites. Taxa belonging to genera absent from eastern Asia (232 species or 19 percent of the flora) were an equally interesting non-random sample of the native flora: they were more likely to be herbaceous and advanced in phylogenetic standing. Absent taxa, however, essentially represented a random sample of the flora as a whole in terms of degree of habitat openness and substrate type. When gradient distributions were corrected for overall species richness distributions, absent taxa showed their peak importance on xeric sites. Taxa in wide-ranging north temperate genera (817 species or 67 percent of the flora) generally constituted a random sample of the flora as a whole; they showed peak importance at higher elevations. These data are used to make inferences about the distribution of species richness in the Smokies landscape. Evidence that the eastern Asian temperate deciduous forests were the most diverse temperate forests on earth is also reviewed. Alternative hypotheses concerning the nature of this heightened diversity are discussed. Investigations of the floristic relationship between temperate eastern Asia and eastern North America generally have treated such relationships at the geographical, systematic, or evolutionary level. There are, however, important ecological correlates to this relationship that have gone, for the most part, untested. This investigation uses a well-known eastern North American landscape, the Great Smoky Mountains, to examine ecological correlates of the floristic relationship. Although others have qualitatively described many of these patterns (cf. Hu, 1936; Cain, 1943; Li, 1952; Wang, 1961), quantitative studies have been lacking. An objective of this research, then, was to develop explicit tests for the distribution of ecological properties in the flora as a function of phytogeography. The landscape distribution of the Great Smoky Mountains flora was used to develop and discuss community level hypotheses on the eastern AsianNorth American floristic relationship. Preparation and x-ray crystal structure of pentaiodine(1+) hexafluoroarsenate(1-) and electronic structure of the pentaiodine(1+) cation

The new heteronaphthalenic framework 1,3,2-benzazathiaphospholium has been prepared as a free cation 1[NSP] and as the neutral chloride 2[NSPCl] and bromide 2[NSPBr] derivatives. The spectroscopic and structural (crystal data for C 6 H 5 AlCl 4 NPS: monoclinic, P2 1 /c, a=6.4773 (6) A, b=23.5434 (21) A, c=8.5101 (6) A, β=98.048 (7) o , Z=4) features of the cation are consistent with a hybrid of the corresponding dithia 1[S 2 P] and diamino 1[N 2 P] derivatives. In particular, the P-N and P-S bond lengths are very similar to those of the parent cations and represent experimental evidence for P-N and P-S pπ-bonding of comparable strength, in agreement with the theoretical π-bond energies. The neutral halides, 2-chloro-1,2,3-benzazathiaphosphole (crystal data for C 6 H 5 ClNPS: monoclinic, P2 1 /c, a=8.5607 (10) A, b=10.6948 (10) A, c=8.5994 (13) A, β=95.516 (11) o , Z=4) and 2-bromo-1,2,3-benzazathiaphosphole (crystal data for C 6 H 5 BrNPS: monoclinic, P2 1 /c, a=8.5345 (12) A, b=10.6990 (14) A, c=8.8213 (7) A, β=94.705 (8) o , Z=4) are isostructural and adopt dimeric structures, with long P-Z bonds
