The Theory of Island Biogeography

We consider 27 population and community terms used frequently by parasitologists when describing the ecology of parasites. We provide suggestions for various terms in an attempt to foster consistent use and to make terms used in parasite ecology easier to interpret for those who study free-living organisms. We suggest strongly that authors, whether they agree or disagree with us, provide complete and unambiguous definitions for all parameters of their studies.

The Cambridge Structural Database (CSD) contains a complete record of all published organic and metal–organic small-molecule crystal structures. The database has been in operation for over 50 years and continues to be the primary means of sharing structural chemistry data and knowledge across disciplines. As well as structures that are made public to support scientific articles, it includes many structures published directly as CSD Communications. All structures are processed both computationally and by expert structural chemistry editors prior to entering the database. A key component of this processing is the reliable association of the chemical identity of the structure studied with the experimental data. This important step helps ensure that data is widely discoverable and readily reusable. Content is further enriched through selective inclusion of additional experimental data. Entries are available to anyone through free CSD community web services. Linking services developed and maintained by the CCDC, combined with the use of standard identifiers, facilitate discovery from other resources. Data can also be accessed through CCDC and third party software applications and through an application programming interface.

Statistics for Spatial Data.

This book is the second of two volumes in a series on terrestrial and marine comparisons, focusing on the temporal complement of the earlier spatial analysis of patchiness and pattern (Levin et al. 1993). The issue of the relationships among pattern, scale, and patchiness has been framed forcefully in John Steele’s writings of two decades (e.g., Steele 1978). There is no pattern without an observational frame. In the words of Nietzsche, “There are no facts… only interpretations.”

The Problem of Pattern and Scale in Ecology: The Robert H. MacArthur Award Lecture

Rhodium(I)-catalyzed homologation of aromatic aldehydes with trimethylsilyldiazomethane.

The mixed-valence complexes [(bpy)2(Cl)OsIII(BL)OsII(Cl)(bpy)2]3+ and [(tpy)(bpy)OsIII(BL)OsII(bpy)(tpy)]5+ (bpy is bipyridine; tpy is 2,2‘:6‘,2‘ ‘-terpyridine; BL is a bridging ligand, either 4,4‘-bipyridine (4,4‘-bpy) or pyrazine (pz)) have been prepared and studied by infrared and near-infrared measurements in different solvents. For BL = 4,4‘-bpy, there is clear evidence for localized OsII and OsIII oxidation states in the appearance of the expected two interconfigurational dπ → dπ bands at OsIII and additional, broad absorption features in the near-infrared arising from intervalence transfer (IT) transitions. For [(bpy)2(Cl)Os(pz)Os(Cl)(bpy)2]3+ and [(tpy)(bpy)Os(pz)Os(bpy)(tpy)]5+, unusually intense ν(pz) bands appear in the infrared at 1599 cm-1 (e = 2600 M-1 cm-1) for the former and at 1594 cm-1 (e = 2020 M-1 cm-1) for the latter. Intervalence Transfer at the Localized-to-Delocalized, Mixed-Valence Transition in Osmium Polypyridyl Complexes

A series of well-defined enantiopure 1,1‘-binaphthyl-based oligomers linked through their 6,6‘-positions, ranging from quaternaphthol to decanaphthol, have been synthesized by Suzuki and Stille coupling reactions. These novel oligonaphthyls have been characterized by 1H and 13C{1H} NMR spectroscopy and high-resolution mass spectrometry. A combination of X-ray structural and CD studies suggests that these oligonaphthyls adopt zigzag but not helical conformations. As the chain length increases, the compounds show enhanced fluorescence. The fluorescence intensity of oligonaphthols is almost 2 orders of magnitude higher than that of 1,1‘-bi-2-naphthol and can be effectively and enantioselectively quenched with trans-1,2-diaminocyclohexane with an enantioselectivity factor of 1.24. The present work thus demonstrates the potential of constructing chiral sensory materials based on well-defined enantiopure oligonaphthols.

(1) Data from a vascular plant survey of the southern Appalachian high peaks, U.S.A., were used to model the relationship between five floristic categories of species richness (total, high elevation, northern, endemic and rare species), six topographic variables (area above 1680 m, area above 1830 m, maximum elevation, number of peaks, inter-mountain distance and latitude) and the number of community types. (2) The best model of species richness varied with each richness category: total richness was best modelled by number of communities, high elevation species by area, northern species by area, endemic species by number of communities and rare species by maximum elevation. (3) In simple regressions, there was no clear preference among model formulations or species richness transformations. Elevation, number of peaks and area were all relatively important predictors, while isolation was unimportant. In multiple regression models, linear formulations were almost always the strongest. For total species richness, the best multiple regression model was linear and the most important predictor was the number of peaks. (4) Rare species richness increased faster with area or elevation than any other richness category (slope coefficients for log (rare species)-log (area) models were 0 30 for the whole data set and 0 49 for the eight largest areas). (5) Distance between mountains almost always had a positive, though usually minor, effect on species richness, thus casting doubt on the appropriateness of the MacArthur and Wilson model for this data set. We hypothesize that distance between mountain areas is probably a poor measure of ecological isolation and that historic extinctions have shaped the species-area relations we observed.
