Journal Article

Haplotype and phylogenetic analyses suggest that one European-specific mtDNA background plays a role in the expression of Leber hereditary optic neuropathy by increasing the penetrance of the primary mutations 11778 and 14484

TL;DR: This analysis shows that the putative secondary/intermediate LHON mutations 4216, 4917, 13708, 15257, and 15812 are ancient polymorphisms, are associated in specific combinations, and define two common Caucasoid-specific haplotypes (haplogroups J and T).
Journal ArticleDOI

Retinal nerve fiber layer evaluation by optical coherence tomography in Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy.

TL;DR: On the basis of OCT data, the RNFL is thickened in E-LHON and severely thinned in A- lHON; the temporal fibers are the first and most severely affected; the nasal fibers seem to be partially spared in the late stage of the disease.
Journal ArticleDOI

Correlation between retinal nerve fibre layer thickness and optic nerve head size: an optical coherence tomography study

TL;DR: RNFL thickness measurements obtained by Stratus OCT increased significantly with an increase in optic disc size, and it is not clear if eyes with large ONHs show a thicker RNFL as a result of an increased amount of nerve fibres or to the shorter distance between the circular scan and the optic disc edge.
