Journal ArticleDOI
A yeast fermentate improves gastrointestinal discomfort and constipation by modulation of the gut microbiome: results from a randomized double-blind placebo-controlled pilot trial.
Iris Pinheiro,Larry E. Robinson,An Verhelst,Massimo Marzorati,Bjorn Winkens,Pieter Van den Abbeele,Sam Possemiers +6 more
TL;DR: Despite the relatively low dose administered (500 mg/day), particularly when comparing to the high recommended doses for prebiotic fibers, EpiCor fermentate was able to modulate the composition of the gut microbiome, resulting in improvement of constipation-associated symptoms.
Journal ArticleDOI
Fate and Bioaccessibility of Iodine in Food Prepared from Agronomically Biofortified Wheat and Rice and Impact of Cofertilization with Zinc and Selenium.
Ismail Cakmak,Massimo Marzorati,Pieter Van den Abbeele,Katja Hora,Harmen Tjalling Holwerda,Mustafa Atilla Yazici,Erdinc Savasli,Joachim Neri,Gijs Du Laing +8 more
TL;DR: The foliar fertilization of wheat was found to be adequate to alleviate iodine deficiency in a population with a moderate to high intake of bread.
Arabinoxylans and inulin differentially modulate the mucosal and luminal gut microbiota and mucin-degradation in humanized rats
Pieter Van den Abbeele,Philippe Gérard,Sylvie Rabot,Aurélia Bruneau,Sahar El Aidy,Muriel Derrien,Michiel Kleerebezem,Erwin G. Zoetendal,Hauke Smidt,Willy Verstraete,Tom Van de Wiele,Sam Possemiers +11 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated how a novel class of potential prebiotic long-chain arabinoxylans (LC-AX) and the well-established Prebiotic inulin (IN) modulate the gut microbiota of humanized rats.
Journal ArticleDOI
A Comparison of the In Vitro Effects of 2'Fucosyllactose and Lactose on the Composition and Activity of Gut Microbiota from Infants and Toddlers.
Pieter Van den Abbeele,Norbert Sprenger,Jonas Ghyselinck,Benoît Marsaux,Massimo Marzorati,Florence Rochat +5 more
TL;DR: The authors investigated the gut microbiota fermentation of HMO 2'fucosyllactose (2'-FL), using two in vitro models (48 h fecal incubations and the long-term mucosal simulator of the human intestinal microbial ecosystem [M-SHIME®]) with fecal samples from 3-month-fed (BF) infants as well as 2-3 year old toddlers.
Journal ArticleDOI
Influence of probiotic bacteria on gut microbiota composition and gut wall function in an in-vitro model in patients with Parkinson's disease
Jonas Ghyselinck,Lynn Verstrepen,Frédéric Moens,Pieter Van den Abbeele,Arnout Bruggeman,Jawal Said,Barry Smith,Lynne Ann Barker,Caroline Jordan,Valentina Leta,Valentina Leta,K. Ray Chaudhuri,K. Ray Chaudhuri,Abdul Basit,Simon Gaisford +14 more
TL;DR: The data suggest that if development and/or progression of PD is influenced by gut microbiota dysbiosis then supplementation of the diet with a properly formulated probiotic may be a useful adjunct to standard treatment in clinic.
