Recent decline in the global land evapotranspiration trend due to limited moisture supply
Martin Jung,Markus Reichstein,Philippe Ciais,Sonia I. Seneviratne,Justin Sheffield,Michael L. Goulden,Gordon B. Bonan,Alessandro Cescatti,Jiquan Chen,Richard de Jeu,A. Johannes Dolman,Werner Eugster,Dieter Gerten,Damiano Gianelle,Nadine Gobron,Jens Heinke,John S. Kimball,Beverly E. Law,Leonardo Montagnani,Qiaozhen Mu,Brigitte Mueller,Keith W. Oleson,Dario Papale,Andrew D. Richardson,Olivier Roupsard,S. W. Running,Enrico Tomelleri,Nicolas Viovy,Ulrich Weber,Christopher B. Williams,Eric F. Wood,Sönke Zaehle,Ke Zhang +32 more
TL;DR: An estimate of global land evapotranspiration from 1982 to 2008 is provided using a global monitoring network, meteorological and remote-sensing observations, and a machine-learning algorithm, which suggests that increasing soil-moisture limitations on evapOTranspiration largely explain the recent decline of the global land-evapotranpiration trend.
Journal ArticleDOI
GLEAM v3: satellite-based land evaporation and root-zone soil moisture
Brecht Martens,Diego G. Miralles,Diego G. Miralles,Hans Lievens,Hans Lievens,Robin van der Schalie,Richard de Jeu,Diego Fernández-Prieto,Hylke E. Beck,Wouter Dorigo,Wouter Dorigo,Niko E. C. Verhoest +11 more
TL;DR: The Global Land Evaporation Amsterdam Model (GLEAM) as discussed by the authors is a set of algorithms dedicated to the estimation of terrestrial evaporation and root-zone soil moisture from satellite data.
Journal ArticleDOI
The Millennium Drought in southeast Australia (2001–2009): Natural and human causes and implications for water resources, ecosystems, economy, and society
Albert van Dijk,Hylke E. Beck,Russell Crosbie,Richard de Jeu,Yi Y. Liu,Yi Y. Liu,Geoff Podger,Bertrand Timbal,Neil R. Viney +8 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors used climate, water, economic, and remote sensing data combined with biophysical modeling to understand the drivers of the "Millennium Drought" and its impacts.
Journal ArticleDOI
Multisensor historical climatology of satellite-derived global land surface moisture
TL;DR: In this paper, a radiative transfer-based land parameter retrieval model is used for soil moisture data retrieval, which is consistent in its retrieval approach for the entire period of data record.
Journal ArticleDOI
ESA CCI Soil Moisture for improved Earth system understanding : State-of-the art and future directions
Wouter Dorigo,Wolfgang Wagner,Clément Albergel,Franziska Albrecht,Gianpaolo Balsamo,Luca Brocca,Daniel Chung,Martin Ertl,Matthias Forkel,Alexander Gruber,E. M. Haas,P. D. Hamer,Martin Hirschi,Jaakko Ikonen,Richard de Jeu,R. Kidd,William Lahoz,Yi Y. Liu,Diego G. Miralles,Diego G. Miralles,Thomas Mistelbauer,Nadine Nicolai-Shaw,Robert Parinussa,Chiara Pratola,Chiara Pratola,Christoph Reimer,Robin van der Schalie,Sonia I. Seneviratne,Tuomo Smolander,Pascal Lecomte +29 more
TL;DR: The European Space Agency (ESA) released the first multi-decadal, global satellite-observed soil moisture (SM) dataset as part of its Climate Change Initiative (CCI) program.
