Modelling the Passive Microwave Signature from Land Surfaces: A Review of Recent Results and Application to the L-Band SMOS SMAP Soil Moisture Retrieval Algorithms
Jean-Pierre Wigneron,Thomas J. Jackson,Peggy O'Neill,G. De Lannoy,P. de Rosnay,Jeffrey P. Walker,Paolo Ferrazzoli,Valery Mironov,Simone Bircher,Jennifer Grant,Mehmet Kurum,Mike Schwank,Joaquín Muñoz-Sabater,Narendra N. Das,Alain Royer,Amen Al-Yaari,Ahmad Al Bitar,Roberto Fernandez-Moran,Heather Lawrence,Arnaud Mialon,Marie Parrens,P. Richaume,Steven Delwart,Yann Kerr +23 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present a review of the significant progress which has been made over the last decade in this field of research with a focus on L-band, and a discussion on possible applications to the SMOS and SMAP soil moisture retrieval approaches.
Journal ArticleDOI
SMOS-IC: An Alternative SMOS Soil Moisture and Vegetation Optical Depth Product
Roberto Fernandez-Moran,Amen Al-Yaari,Arnaud Mialon,Ali Mahmoodi,Ahmad Al Bitar,Gabrielle De Lannoy,Nemesio Rodriguez-Fernandez,Ernesto Lopez-Baeza,Yann Kerr,Jean-Pierre Wigneron +9 more
TL;DR: An alternative SMOS product that was developed by INRA and CESBIO is presented, which is much simpler and does not account for corrections associated with the antenna pattern and the complex SMOS viewing angle geometry and considers pixels as homogeneous to avoid uncertainties and errors linked to inconsistent auxiliary datasets.
Journal ArticleDOI
Assessment and inter-comparison of recently developed/reprocessed microwave satellite soil moisture products using ISMN ground-based measurements
Amen Al-Yaari,Jean-Pierre Wigneron,Wouter Dorigo,Andreas Colliander,Thierry Pellarin,Sebastian Hahn,Arnaud Mialon,P. Richaume,Roberto Fernandez-Moran,Lei Fan,Lei Fan,Yann Kerr,G. De Lannoy +12 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the most recent microwave-based Soil moisture (SM) retrieval products available from NASA's (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) SMAP (Soil Moisture Active Passive) satellite, ESA's led mission (European Space Agency) SMOS-IC satellite, ASCAT (Advanced Scatterometer) sensor on board the meteorological operational (Metop) platforms Metop A and Metop B, and the ESA Climate Change Initiative (CCI) blended long-term SM time series.
Journal ArticleDOI
Satellite-observed pantropical carbon dynamics
Lei Fan,Lei Fan,Jean-Pierre Wigneron,Philippe Ciais,Jérôme Chave,Martin Brandt,Rasmus Fensholt,Sassan Saatchi,Ana Bastos,Amen Al-Yaari,Koen Hufkens,Koen Hufkens,Yuanwei Qin,Xiangming Xiao,Chi Chen,Ranga B. Myneni,Roberto Fernandez-Moran,Arnaud Mialon,Nemesio Rodriguez-Fernandez,Yann Kerr,Feng Tian,Josep Peñuelas +21 more
TL;DR: Low-frequency L-band passive microwave observations are used to compute a direct and spatially explicit quantification of annual aboveground carbon (AGC) fluxes and show that the tropical net AGC budget was approximately in balance during 2010 to 2017.
Journal ArticleDOI
Evaluation of microwave remote sensing for monitoring live fuel moisture content in the Mediterranean region.
Lei Fan,Lei Fan,Jean-Pierre Wigneron,Qing Xiao,Amen Al-Yaari,Jianguang Wen,Nicolas Martin-StPaul,J.-L. Dupuy,François Pimont,Ahmad Al Bitar,Roberto Fernandez-Moran,Yann Kerr +11 more
TL;DR: In this article, the ability of several long-term passive microwave remote sensing indices to capture the live fuel moisture content (LFMC) temporal dynamic of various Mediterranean shrub species was assessed.
