TL;DR: Raising global scientific and public awareness of the plight of the world’s primates and the costs of their loss to ecosystem health and human society is imperative.
Journal ArticleDOI
Distribution Survey and Threat Assessment of the Yellow-tailed Woolly Monkey (Oreonax flavicauda; Humboldt 1812), Northeastern Peru
TL;DR: The results suggest that existing conservation measures may be inadequate at protecting this species but that substantial opportunities do exist and further surveys need to be made in the southern distribution of this species to determine more accurately extant habitat.
Journal ArticleDOI
Effectiveness of locally run conservation initiatives in north-east Peru
TL;DR: Evaluated conservation areas in rural Peru show that far from being a problem for conservation many rural communities are actively promoting or participating in conservation initiatives on a local scale with landscape-level impacts, thus providing effective solutions to threats.
Journal ArticleDOI
The rise and fall of a genus: Complete mtDNA genomes shed light on the phylogenetic position of yellow-tailed woolly monkeys, Lagothrix flavicauda, and on the evolutionary history of the family Atelidae (Primates: Platyrrhini).
Anthony Di Fiore,Anthony Di Fiore,Paulo B. Chaves,Paulo B. Chaves,Fanny M. Cornejo,Christopher A. Schmitt,Christopher A. Schmitt,Christopher A. Schmitt,Sam Shanee,Liliana Cortés-Ortiz,Valéria Fagundes,Christian Roos,Víctor Pacheco +12 more
TL;DR: The results thus confirm a position within Lagothrix for the yellow-tailed woolly monkey and strongly suggest that the name Oreonax be formally considered a synonym for this genus.
Journal ArticleDOI
Diagnostic overview of the illegal trade in primates and law enforcement in Peru
TL;DR: The domestic trade in primates for pets and bushmeat in Peru is estimated to be in the hundreds of thousands per year, with the larger bodied Atelidae facing the highest direct consequences.
