Journal ArticleDOI
Olfactory transmucosal SARS-CoV-2 invasion as a port of central nervous system entry in individuals with COVID-19.
Jenny Meinhardt,Josefine Radke,Carsten Dittmayer,Jonas Franz,Jonas Franz,Carolina Thomas,Carolina Thomas,Ronja Mothes,Michael Laue,Julia Schneider,Sebastian Brünink,Selina Greuel,Malte Lehmann,Olga Hassan,Tom Aschman,Elisa Schumann,Robert Lorenz Chua,Christian Conrad,Roland Eils,Roland Eils,Werner Stenzel,Marc Windgassen,Larissa Rößler,Hans-Hilmar Goebel,Hans R. Gelderblom,Hubert Martin,Andreas Nitsche,Walter J. Schulz-Schaeffer,Samy Hakroush,Martin Sebastian Winkler,Björn Tampe,Franziska Scheibe,Peter Körtvelyessy,Peter Körtvelyessy,Dirk Reinhold,Britta Siegmund,Anja A. Kühl,Sefer Elezkurtaj,David Horst,Lars Oesterhelweg,Michael Tsokos,Barbara Ingold-Heppner,Christine Stadelmann,Christian Drosten,Victor M. Corman,Helena Radbruch,Frank L. Heppner +46 more
TL;DR: The morphological changes associated with infection such as thromboembolic ischemic infarction of the CNS and evidence of SARS-CoV-2 neurotropism are described and presented.
Journal ArticleDOI
Abatacept in B7-1–Positive Proteinuric Kidney Disease
Chih Chuan Yu,Chih Chuan Yu,Alessia Fornoni,Astrid Weins,Samy Hakroush,Dony Maiguel,Junichiro Sageshima,Linda Chen,Gaetano Ciancio,Mohd Hafeez Faridi,Daniel Behr,Kirk N. Campbell,Jer Ming Chang,Hung Chun Chen,Jun Oh,Christian Faul,M. Amin Arnaout,Paolo Fiorina,Vineet Gupta,Anna Greka,George W. Burke,Peter Mundel +21 more
TL;DR: Data indicate that abatacept may stabilize β1-integrin activation in podocytes and reduce proteinuria in patients with B7-1-positive glomerular disease.
Journal ArticleDOI
Control of signaling-mediated clearance of apoptotic cells by the tumor suppressor p53.
Kyoung Wan Yoon,Sanguine Byun,Eunjeong Kwon,So Young Hwang,Kiki Chu,Masatsugu Hiraki,Seung-Hee Jo,Astrid Weins,Samy Hakroush,Angelika Cebulla,David B. Sykes,Anna Greka,Peter Mundel,David E. Fisher,Anna Mandinova,Anna Mandinova,Sam W. Lee,Sam W. Lee +17 more
TL;DR: A postapoptotic target gene of p53, Death Domain1α (DD1α), is identified that is responsive to genotoxic stresses and expressed in immune cells and appears to function as an immunoregulator of T cell tolerance.
Journal ArticleDOI
Inhibition of the TRPC5 ion channel protects the kidney filter.
Thomas Schaldecker,Sookyung Kim,Constantine Tarabanis,Dequan Tian,Samy Hakroush,Philip Castonguay,Wooin Ahn,Hanna Wallentin,Hans Heid,Corey R. Hopkins,Craig W. Lindsley,Antonio Riccio,Lisa Buvall,Astrid Weins,Anna Greka +14 more
TL;DR: Using Trpc5-KO mice, a small-molecule inhibitor of TRPC5, Ca2+ imaging in isolated kidney glomeruli, and live imagining of podocyte actin dynamics, it is determined that loss of TR PC5 or its inhibition abrogates podocyte cytoskeletal remodeling.

Olfactory transmucosal SARS-CoV-2 invasion as port of Central Nervous System entry in COVID-19 patients
Jenny Meinhardt,Josefine Radke,Carsten Dittmayer,Ronja Mothes,Jonas Franz,Michael Laue,Julia Schneider,Sebastian Brünink,Olga Hassan,Werner Stenzel,Marc Windgassen,Larissa Rößler,Hans-Hilmar Goebel,Hubert Martin,Andreas Nitsche,Walter J. Corman,Helena Radbruch,Frank L. Heppner +28 more
TL;DR: By precisely investigating and anatomically mapping oro- and pharyngeal regions and brains of 32 patients dying from COVID-19, CNS infarction due to cerebral thromboembolism is described, and SARS-CoV-2 neurotropism is demonstrated.
