Journal ArticleDOI
Transition to dissipation in a model of superflow.
TL;DR: A direct numerical study of a model of superflow, the nonlinear Schrodinger equation, and simple analytical arguments shows a very striking phenomenon: the flow around a disk creates a drag force beyond a well-defined threshold velocity.
Journal ArticleDOI
Roadmap on optical rogue waves and extreme events
Nail Akhmediev,Bertrand Kibler,Fabio Baronio,Milivoj R. Belic,Wei-Ping Zhong,Yiqi Zhang,Wonkeun Chang,Jose M. Soto-Crespo,Peter Vouzas,Philippe Grelu,Caroline Lecaplain,Kamal Hammani,Sergio Rica,Antonio Picozzi,Mustapha Tlidi,Krassimir Panajotov,Arnaud Mussot,Abdelkrim Bendahmane,Pascal Szriftgiser,Goëry Genty,John M. Dudley,Alexandre Kudlinski,Ayhan Demircan,Uwe Morgner,Shalva Amiraranashvili,Carsten Brée,G. Steinmeyer,Cristina Masoller,Neil G. R. Broderick,Antoine F. J. Runge,Miro Erkintalo,Stefania Residori,Umberto Bortolozzo,F. T. Arecchi,Stefan Wabnitz,C.G.L. Tiofack,Saliya Coulibaly,Majid Taki +37 more
TL;DR: The concept of optical rogue wave was introduced by Solli et al. as discussed by the authors, who defined it as "an optical pulse whose amplitude or intensity is much higher than that of the surrounding pulses".
Journal ArticleDOI
Self-organized origami
TL;DR: This paper examines the possible physical origin for the Miura-ori leaf-folding patterns that arise naturally in insect wings, leaves, and other laminae-like organelles, and points out examples where biaxial compression of an elastically supported thin film spontaneously generates these patterns.
Journal ArticleDOI
Condensation of classical nonlinear waves.
TL;DR: A thermodynamic description of the classical condensation process by using a wave turbulence theory with ultraviolet cutoff and showing that the nonlinear interaction makes the transition to condensation subcritical.
Journal ArticleDOI
Observation of the kinetic condensation of classical waves
Can Sun,Shu Jia,Shu Jia,Christopher Barsi,Sergio Rica,Sergio Rica,Antonio Picozzi,Jason W. Fleischer +7 more
TL;DR: Bose-Einstein condensation has been shown to be a general wave-mechanical phenomenon in a nonlinear crystal as discussed by the authors, and it is considered to be an inherently quantum phenomenon.
