Journal ArticleDOI
Excitatory motor neurons are local oscillators for backward locomotion.
Shangbang Gao,Sihui Asuka Guan,Sihui Asuka Guan,Anthony D. Fouad,Jun Meng,Jun Meng,Taizo Kawano,Yung-Chi Huang,Yi Li,Salvador Alcaire,Salvador Alcaire,Wesley Hung,Yangning Lu,Yangning Lu,Yingchuan Billy Qi,Yishi Jin,Mark J. Alkema,Christopher Fang-Yen,Mei Zhen,Mei Zhen +19 more
TL;DR: Motor neurons themselves derive rhythms, which are dually regulated by the descending interneurons to control the reversal motor state, and exemplify compression: essential circuit properties are conserved but executed by fewer numbers and layers of neurons in a small locomotor network.
Journal ArticleDOI
Sustained deep-tissue voltage recording using a fast indicator evolved for two-photon microscopy
Zhuohe Liu,Xiaoyu Lu,Vincent Villette,Yueyang Gou,Kevin L. Colbert,Shujuan Lai,Sihui Asuka Guan,Michelle A. Land,Jihwan Lee,Tensae Assefa,Daniel R. Zollinger,Maria M. Korympidou,Anna Vlasits,Michelle M. Pang,Sharon X. Su,Changjia Cai,Emmanouil Froudarakis,Na Zhou,S.S. Patel,Cameron Smith,Annick Ayon,Pierre Bizouard,Jonathan Bradley,Katrin Franke,Thomas R. Clandinin,Andrea Giovannucci,Andreas S. Tolias,Jake Reimer,Stéphane Dieudonné,François St-Pierre +29 more
TL;DR: In this paper , the authors developed a multiparameter high-throughput platform to optimize voltage indicators for two-photon microscopy, which can report light-evoked responses in axonal termini of Drosophila interneurons and the dendrites and somata of isolated mouse retina.
Posted ContentDOI
Extrasynaptic signaling enables an asymmetric juvenile motor circuit to produce a symmetric gait
Yangning Lu,Yangning Lu,Tosif Ahamed,Ben Mulcahy,Daniel Witvliet,Daniel Witvliet,Sihui Asuka Guan,Sihui Asuka Guan,Wesley Hung,Jun Meng,Jun Meng,Quan Wen,Aravinthan D. T. Samuel,Mei Zhen,Mei Zhen +14 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors show that the C. elegans larva has an asymmetrically wired motor circuit, but still generates a bending pattern with dorsal-ventral symmetry, and that the juvenile motor circuit is replaced by two homologous motor circuits that separately drive dorsal and ventral bending.
Posted ContentDOI
Excitatory Motor Neurons are Local Central Pattern Generators in an Anatomically Compressed Motor Circuit for Reverse Locomotion [preprint]
Shangbang Gao,Sihui Asuka Guan,Anthony D. Fouad,Jun Meng,Yung-Chi Huang,Yi Li,Salvador Alcaire,Wesley Hung,Taizo Kawano,Yangning Lu,Yingchuan Billy Qi,Yishi Jin,Mark J. Alkema,Christopher Fang-Yen,Mei Zhen +14 more
TL;DR: It is shown that the cholinergic and excitatory class A motor neurons exhibit intrinsic and oscillatory activity, and such an activity can drive reverse locomotion without premotor interneurons.
