Deposits of clastic carbonate-dominated (calciclastic) sedimentary slope systems in the rock record have been identified mostly as linearly-consistent carbonate apron deposits, even though most ancient clastic carbonate slope deposits fit the submarine fan systems better. Calciclastic submarine fans are consequently rarely described and are poorly understood. Subsequently, very little is known especially in mud-dominated calciclastic submarine fan systems. Presented in this study are a sedimentological core and petrographic characterisation of samples from eleven boreholes from the Lower Carboniferous of Bowland Basin (Northwest England) that reveals a >250 m thick calciturbidite complex deposited in a calciclastic submarine fan setting. Seven facies are recognised from core and thin section characterisation and are grouped into three carbonate turbidite sequences. They include: 1) Calciturbidites, comprising mostly of highto low-density, wavy-laminated bioclast-rich facies; 2) low-density densite mudstones which are characterised by planar laminated and unlaminated muddominated facies; and 3) Calcidebrites which are muddy or hyper-concentrated debrisflow deposits occurring as poorly-sorted, chaotic, mud-supported floatstones. A new dynamic dispersing technique (DDT) is proposed and demonstrated to improve the photoresist (PR) coating process in planar lightwave circuit (PLC) fabrication. In this technique, the PR is dispensed during the wafer's spin cycle on the spin coater instead of the conventional static dispensing before spinning. In comparison to the conventional static dispersing technique (SDT), DDT has significantly improved several properties of the PR layer including its thinning behavior, coating uniformity, and PR amount. Using DDT, the PR thickness averagely reduces by ∼0.2 μm. The radial uniformity of the PR from the centre is also improved from the average difference of 0.28 μm in SDT to 0.14 μm in DDT. Furthermore, the PR amount required for the coating process is reduced from 3.00 ml (SDT) to 0.25 ml (DDT). Two different DDTs are also compared in this paper including the application of PR during the spin coater's acceleration step (1st DDT) and the application of PR during the spin coater's constant speed (2nd DDT). © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Dynamic dispersing technique for PR coating process in planar lightwave circuit fabrication

Switchable single and double Brillouin multiwavelength and pulsed laser is successfully demonstrated. Brillouin spacing can be switched from single (0.08 nm) to double spacing (0.16 nm) or vice versa by swapping the ports of the coupler in the proposed configuration. The proposed configuration can also be used to produce pulsed laser by inserting a home-made carbon nanotubes saturable absorber into the laser cavity. The proposed system is very versatile and flexible as it can be used as a multiwavelength laser or pulsed laser to cater for different types of applications.

Switchable Brillouin frequency multiwavelength and pulsed fiber laser

Q-switched erbium doped fiber laser was demonstrated using antimony telluride (Sb2 Te3 ) as saturable absorber (SA). The SA was fabricated by adding Sb3Te2 powder into PVA suspension and left dry in room temperature for two days. Then, the SA was sandwiched in between two FC/PC fiber ferrules, which can provide easy integration and flexibility into the laser cavity. Stable and self-started Q-switched laser operates at 1531 nm center wavelength. The laser repetition rate increased from 54.5 kHz to 88.4 kHz and pulse duration decreased from 6.84 μs to 4.58 μs as the pump power increased. A signal to noise ratio value of 55 dB was achieved at pump power 130 mW. At the maximum pump power, the average output power and pulse energy are 0.26 mW and 2.78 nJ.

Multiwavelength L-Band Brillouin / Erbium Fiber Laser

In this paper, we propose a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) interrogation system for high resolution sensor application based on radio frequency (RF) generation technique by beating a single longitudinal mode (SLM) fiber ring laser with an external tunable laser source (TLS). The external TLS provides a constant wavelength (CW), functioning as the reference signal for the frequency beating technique. The TLS used has a constant output power and wavelength over time. The sensor signal is provided by the reflected wavelength of a typical fiber Bragg grating (FBG) in the SLM fiber ring laser, which consists of a 1 m long highly doped Erbium doped fiber as the gain medium. The key to ensure the SLM laser oscillation is the role of graphene as saturable absorber which is opposed to the commonly used unpumped erbiumdoped fiber and this consequently contributes to the simple and short cavity design of our proposed system. The signal from the SLM fiber ring laser, which is generated by the FBG in response to external changes, such as temperature, strain, air humidity and air movement, is heterodyned with the CW signal from the TLS at a 6 GHz photodetector using a 3-dB fused coupler to generate the frequency beating. This proposed system is experimentally demonstrated as a temperature sensor and the results shows that the frequency response of the system towards the changes in temperature is about 1.3 GHz/°C, taking into account the resolution bandwidth of 3 MHz of the radio frequency spectrum analyzer (RFSA).
