Demonstrations of coal-fired oxy-fuel technology for carbon capture and storage and issues with commercial deployment

TL;DR: In this paper, the current international status of the technology; the contributions of current demonstrations; and a roadmap for commercial deployment is provided. But, even if a unit was economically viable and could be provided by a vendor, the generator and vendor would need to share the technical risk.
Journal ArticleDOI

The properties and thermal effects of ash deposits in coal-fired furnaces

TL;DR: In this article, the physical and chemical character of fireside ash deposits depend on the processes by which deposits are formed and subsequent reactions within the deposit and with furnace gases. And the influence of the variation of these properties on radiative transfer is quantified using mathematical models of furnaces.
Journal ArticleDOI

Selection of suitable oxygen carriers for chemical looping air separation: a thermodynamic approach

TL;DR: In this article, the results of a comprehensive thermodynamic study conducted by a group to identify suitable oxygen carriers for CLAS at medium to low temperatures were presented. But the authors did not consider the use of CO2 for the reduction process.
Journal ArticleDOI

Submicron ash formation from coal combustion

TL;DR: This paper examined the variability occurring between the submicron ashes formed from coals of similar rank and found that the condensation of evaporated species is responsible for the formation of ash particles smaller than 0.3μm.
Journal ArticleDOI

Computer-controlled scanning electron microscopy of minerals in coal—Implications for ash deposition

TL;DR: In this article, the authors used computer-controlled scanning electron microscopy (CCSEM) data to predict the fouling and slagging characteristics of several coal coals and compared the theoretical speculations on the physical character of ash derived from these indices with the experimental data obtained from combustion of coals in a drop-tube furnace.
