Journal ArticleDOI
Sal-like protein 4 (SALL4), a stem cell biomarker in liver cancers
Tsunekazu Oikawa,Tsunekazu Oikawa,Akihide Kamiya,Mikio Zeniya,Hiromi Chikada,Ahn Dong Hyuck,Yuji Yamazaki,Eliane Wauthier,Hisao Tajiri,Lance D. Miller,Xin Wei Wang,Lola M. Reid,Hiromitsu Nakauchi +12 more
TL;DR: SALL4′s expression is an indicator of stem cells, a prognostic marker in liver cancers, correlates with cell and tumor growth, with resistance to 5‐FU, and its suppression results in differentiation and slowed tumor growth.
Journal ArticleDOI
Regulation of the hepatitis C virus RNA replicase by endogenous lipid peroxidation
Daisuke Yamane,David R. McGivern,Eliane Wauthier,Min Kyung Yi,Victoria J. Madden,Christoph Welsch,Iris Antes,Yahong Wen,Pauline E. Chugh,Charles E. McGee,Douglas G. Widman,Ichiro Misumi,Sibali Bandyopadhyay,Seungtaek Kim,Tetsuro Shimakami,Tsunekazu Oikawa,Jason K. Whitmire,Mark T. Heise,Dirk P. Dittmer,C. Cheng Kao,Stuart M. Pitson,Alfred H. Merrill,Lola M. Reid,Stanley M. Lemon +23 more
TL;DR: It is shown that multiple hepatitis C virus genotypes are exquisitely sensitive to oxidative membrane damage, a property distinguishing them from other pathogenic RNA viruses, and that the typical, wild-type HCV replicase is uniquely regulated by lipid peroxidation.
Journal ArticleDOI
Biliary tree stem cells, precursors to pancreatic committed progenitors: Evidence for possible life‐long pancreatic organogenesis
Yunfang Wang,Giacomo Lanzoni,Guido Carpino,Cai-Bin Cui,Juan Domínguez-Bendala,Eliane Wauthier,Vincenzo Cardinale,Tsunekazu Oikawa,Antonello Pileggi,David A. Gerber,Mark E. Furth,Domenico Alvaro,Eugenio Gaudio,Luca Inverardi,Lola M. Reid +14 more
TL;DR: The biliary tree‐derived stem cells and their connections to pancreatic committed progenitors constitute a biological framework for life‐long pancreatic organogenesis.
Journal ArticleDOI
Sall4 regulates cell fate decision in fetal hepatic stem/progenitor cells.
Tsunekazu Oikawa,Tsunekazu Oikawa,Akihide Kamiya,Sei Kakinuma,Mikio Zeniya,Ryuichi Nishinakamura,Hisao Tajiri,Hiromitsu Nakauchi +7 more
TL;DR: The results suggest that Sall4 plays a crucial role in controlling the lineage commitment of hepatoblasts not only inhibiting their differentiation into hepatocytes but also driving their differentiation toward cholangiocytes.
Journal ArticleDOI
Model of fibrolamellar hepatocellular carcinomas reveals striking enrichment in cancer stem cells
Tsunekazu Oikawa,Eliane Wauthier,Timothy A. Dinh,Sara R. Selitsky,Andrea Reyna-Neyra,Guido Carpino,Ronald Levine,Ronald Levine,Vincenzo Cardinale,David S. Klimstra,Eugenio Gaudio,Domenico Alvaro,Nancy Carrasco,Praveen Sethupathy,Lola M. Reid +14 more
TL;DR: A transplantable tumour line is presented, maintained in immune-compromised mice, and validated as a bona fide model of human fibrolamellar hepatocellular carcinomas by multiple methods, revealing a gene signature for hFL-HCCs closely resembling that of biliary tree stem cells—newly discovered precursors for liver and pancreas.
