Screening and prostate cancer mortality: results of the European Randomised Study of Screening for Prostate Cancer (ERSPC) at 13 years of follow-up
Fritz H. Schröder,Jonas Hugosson,Monique J. Roobol,Teuvo L.J. Tammela,Marco Zappa,Vera Nelen,Maciej Kwiatkowski,Marcos Lujan,Liisa Määttänen,Hans Lilja,Louis Denis,Franz Recker,Alvaro Paez,Chris H. Bangma,Sigrid Carlsson,Sigrid Carlsson,Donella Puliti,Arnauld Villers,Xavier Rebillard,Matti Hakama,Ulf-Håkan Stenman,Paula Kujala,Kimmo Taari,Gunnar Aus,Andreas R. Huber,Theo van der Kwast,Ron H.N. van Schaik,Harry J. de Koning,Sue Moss,Anssi Auvinen +29 more
TL;DR: In this update the ERSPC confirms a substantial reduction in prostate cancer mortality attributable to testing of PSA, with a substantially increased absolute effect at 13 years compared with findings after 9 and 11 years.
Journal ArticleDOI
Prostate-Cancer Mortality at 11 Years of Follow-up
Fritz H. Schröder,Jonas Hugosson,Monique J. Roobol,Stefano Ciatto,Vera Nelen,Maciej Kwiatkowski,Marcos Lujan,Hans Lilja,Marco Zappa,Louis Denis,Franz Recker,Alvaro Paez,Liisa Määttänen,Chris H. Bangma,Gunnar Aus,Sigrid Carlsson,Arnauld Villers,Xavier Rebillard,Theodorus van der Kwast,Paula Kujala,Bert G. Blijenberg,Ulf-Håkan Stenman,Andreas R. Huber,Kimmo Taari,Matti Hakama,Sue Moss,Harry J. de Koning,Anssi Auvinen +27 more
TL;DR: Analyses after 2 additional years of follow-up consolidated the previous finding that PSA-based screening significantly reduced mortality from prostate cancer but did not affect all-cause mortality.
Journal Article
A complex between prostate-specific antigen and alpha 1-antichymotrypsin is the major form of prostate-specific antigen in serum of patients with prostatic cancer: assay of the complex improves clinical sensitivity for cancer.
TL;DR: The proportion of the PSA-alpha 1-antichymotrypsin complex was higher in patients with prostatic cancer than in those with benign hyperplasia, and assay of the complex had a higher sensitivity for cancer than assay of total PSA immunoreactivity.
Journal ArticleDOI
National Academy of Clinical Biochemistry Laboratory Medicine Practice Guidelines for Use of Tumor Markers in Testicular, Prostate, Colorectal, Breast, and Ovarian Cancers
Catharine M. Sturgeon,Michael J. Duffy,Ulf-Håkan Stenman,Hans Lilja,Nils Brünner,Daniel W. Chan,Richard J. Babaian,Robert C. Bast,Barry L. Dowell,Francisco J. Rittenhouse,Axel Semjonow,Ie Ming Shih,Paul Sibley,György Sölétormos,Carsten Stephan,Lori J. Sokoll,Barry Hoffman,Eleftherios P. Diamandis +27 more
TL;DR: Recommendations to encourage optimal use of tumor markers for 5 cancer sites were critically reviewed and alpha-fetoprotein, human chorionic gonadotropin, and lactate dehydrogenase are recommended for diagnosis/case finding, staging, prognosis determination, recurrence detection, and therapy monitoring.
Journal ArticleDOI
Plasma Insulin-Like Growth Factor-I, Insulin-Like Growth Factor-Binding Proteins, and Prostate Cancer Risk: a Prospective Study
Pär Stattin,Annika Bylund,Sabina Rinaldi,Carine Biessy,Henri Déchaud,Ulf-Håkan Stenman,Lars Egevad,Elio Riboli,Göran Hallmans,Rudolf Kaaks +9 more
TL;DR: Prostate cancer risk is increased in men with elevated plasma IGF-I, and this association was particularly strong in younger men in this study, suggesting that circulating IGF-i may be specifically involved in the early pathogenesis of prostate cancer.
