Heparin Inhibits Cellular Invasion by SARS-CoV-2: Structural Dependence of the Interaction of the Spike S1 Receptor-Binding Domain with Heparin.
Courtney J. Mycroft-West,Dunhao Su,Isabel Pagani,Timothy R. Rudd,Stefano Elli,Neha S. Gandhi,Scott E. Guimond,Gavin J. Miller,Maria Cecília Zorél Meneghetti,Helena B. Nader,Yong Li,Quentin M. Nunes,Patricia Procter,Nicasio Mancini,Massimo Clementi,Antonella Bisio,Nicholas R. Forsyth,Vito Ferro,Jeremy E. Turnbull,Marco Guerrini,David G. Fernig,Elisa Vicenzi,Edwin A. Yates,Edwin A. Yates,Marcelo A. Lima,Mark A. Skidmore,Mark A. Skidmore +26 more
TL;DR: In this paper, surface plasmon resonance and circular dichroism spectroscopy were used to investigate the structural basis of heparin and glycosaminoglycan heparan sulfate (HS) binding to the spike protein receptor-binding domain (S1 RBD) of SARS-CoV-2.
Journal ArticleDOI
PG545, a dual heparanase and angiogenesis inhibitor, induces potent anti-tumour and anti-metastatic efficacy in preclinical models
Keith Dredge,Edward Hammond,Paul Handley,Thomas J. Gonda,Maree T. Smith,C Vincent,R Brandt,Vito Ferro,Ian Bytheway +8 more
TL;DR: PG545 was shown to inhibit angiogenesis in vivo and induce anti-tumour or anti-metastatic effects in murine models of breast, prostate, liver, lung, colon, head and neck cancers and melanoma, indicating a new anti-angiogenic clinical candidate for cancer therapy.
Journal ArticleDOI
PI-88 and novel heparan sulfate mimetics inhibit angiogenesis
Vito Ferro,Keith Dredge,Ligong Liu,Edward Hammond,Ian Bytheway,Cai Ping Li,Ken D. Johnstone,Tomislav Karoli,Kat Davis,Elizabeth Copeman,Anaud Gautam +10 more
TL;DR: The current data support the development of HS mimetics as potent antiangiogenic anticancer agents as well as improving the pharmacokinetic profile of several analogs.
Journal ArticleDOI
Recent advances in chitosan-based nanoparticulate pulmonary drug delivery
Nazrul Islam,Vito Ferro +1 more
TL;DR: In this article, a review of nanoparticles of chitosan and its derivatives for pulmonary delivery of various therapeutic agents (drugs, genes, vaccines) is presented, and the controversial toxicological effects of chITosan nanoparticles for lung delivery are discussed.
Journal ArticleDOI
MicroRNAs Regulate Tumor Angiogenesis Modulated by Endothelial Progenitor Cells
Prue N. Plummer,Ruth Freeman,Ryan J. Taft,Jelena Vider,Michael Sax,Brittany Umer,Dingcheng Gao,Christopher Johns,John S. Mattick,Stephen D. Wilton,Vito Ferro,Nigel A.J. McMillan,Alexander Swarbrick,Alexander Swarbrick,Vivek Mittal,Albert S. Mellick +15 more
TL;DR: It is shown that genetic ablation of miRNA-processing enzyme Dicer, specifically in the bone marrow, decreased the number of circulating EPCs, resulting in angiogenesis suppression and impaired tumor growth, and genome-wide deep sequencing of small RNAs revealed tumor EPC-intrinsic miRNAs including miR-10b andMiR-196b, which have been previously identified as key regulators of HOX signaling and adult stem cell differentiation.
