Secondary infections in patients hospitalized with COVID-19: incidence and predictive factors.
Marco Ripa,Laura Galli,Andrea Poli,Chiara Oltolini,Vincenzo Spagnuolo,Andrea Mastrangelo,Camilla Muccini,Giacomo Monti,Giacomo De Luca,Giovanni Landoni,Lorenzo Dagna,Massimo Clementi,Patrizia Rovere Querini,Fabio Ciceri,Moreno Tresoldi,Adriano Lazzarin,Alberto Zangrillo,Paolo Scarpellini,Antonella Castagna,Andrea Andolina,Martina Baiardo Redaelli,Giorgia Bigai,Alba Bigoloni,Giorgia Borio,Simona Bossolasco,Elena Bruzzesi,Maria Grazia Calabrò,Stefania Calvisi,Corrado Campochiaro,Diana Canetti,Valentina Canti,Jacopo Castellani,Barbara Castiglioni,Giulio Cavalli,Ludovica Cavallo,Massimo Cernuschi,Matteo Chiurlo,Marta Cilla,Elena Cinel,Paola Cinque,Caterina Conte,Valentina Da Prat,Anna Danise,Rebecca De Lorenzo,Antonio Dell'Acqua,Raffaele Dell’Acqua,Emanuel Della Torre,Liviana Della Torre,Gaetano Di Terlizzi,Iulia Dumea,Federica Farolfi,Marica Ferrante,Claudia Frangi,Luca Fumagalli,Gabriele Gallina,Bruno Germinario,Nicola Gianotti,Monica Guffanti,Hamid Hasson,Francesca Lalla,Marco Lanzillotta,Raffaele Li Voti,Emanuela Messina,Chiara Molinari,Elena Moizo,Marco Montagna,Giulia Morsica,Silvia Nozza,Maria Pascali,Alessandro Patrizi,Marina Pieri,Antonella Poloniato,Dario Prestifilippo,Giuseppe A. Ramirez,Martina Ranzenigo,Jacopo Sapienza,Federico Seghi,Giuseppe Tambussi,Chiara Tassan Din,Stefano Turi,Caterina Uberti-Foppa,Concetta Vinci +81 more
TL;DR: Patients hospitalized with COVID-19 had a high incidence of secondary infections and early need for ICU, respiratory failure, and severe lymphopenia, were identified as risk factors for secondary infections.
Journal ArticleDOI
Heparin Inhibits Cellular Invasion by SARS-CoV-2: Structural Dependence of the Interaction of the Spike S1 Receptor-Binding Domain with Heparin.
Courtney J. Mycroft-West,Dunhao Su,Isabel Pagani,Timothy R. Rudd,Stefano Elli,Neha S. Gandhi,Scott E. Guimond,Gavin J. Miller,Maria Cecília Zorél Meneghetti,Helena B. Nader,Yong Li,Quentin M. Yates,Marcelo A. Lima,Mark A. Skidmore,Mark A. Skidmore +26 more
TL;DR: In this paper, surface plasmon resonance and circular dichroism spectroscopy were used to investigate the structural basis of heparin and glycosaminoglycan heparan sulfate (HS) binding to the spike protein receptor-binding domain (S1 RBD) of SARS-CoV-2.
Journal ArticleDOI
The Microbiome of the Prostate Tumor Microenvironment.
Ilaria T. Cavarretta,Roberto Ferrarese,Walter Cazzaniga,Diego Saita,Roberta Lucianò,Elisa Rita Ceresola,Irene Locatelli,Laura Visconti,Giovanni Lavorgna,Alberto Briganti,Manuela Nebuloni,Claudio Doglioni,Massimo Clementi,Francesco Montorsi,Filippo Canducci,Filippo Canducci,Andrea Salonia +16 more
TL;DR: The prostate contains a plethora of bacteria, which set themselves within the gland with a distribution dependent on the nature of the tissue, thus suggesting a possible pathophysiological correlation between the composition of the local microbial niche and the presence of the tumor itself.
Journal ArticleDOI
The interferon landscape along the respiratory tract impacts the severity of COVID-19.
Benedetta Sposito,Achille Broggi,Laura Pandolfi,Stefania Crotta,Nicola Clementi,Roberto Ferrarese,Sofia Sisti,Elena Criscuolo,Roberto Spreafico,Jaclyn M. Long,Alessandro Ambrosi,Enju Liu,Vanessa Frangipane,Laura Saracino,Sara Bozzini,Laura Marongiu,Fabio A. Facchini,Andrea Bottazzi,Tommaso Fossali,Riccardo Colombo,Massimo Clementi,Elena Tagliabue,Janet Chou,Antonio E. Pontiroli,Federica Meloni,Andreas Wack,Nicasio Mancini,Ivan Zanoni +27 more
TL;DR: The data demonstrate a dynamic production of IFNs in SARS-CoV-2-infected patients and show IFNs play opposing roles at distinct anatomical sites.
Journal ArticleDOI
Oral Probiotic VSL#3 Prevents Autoimmune Diabetes by Modulating Microbiota and Promoting Indoleamine 2,3-Dioxygenase-Enriched Tolerogenic Intestinal Environment
Jayashree Dolpady,Chiara Sorini,Caterina Di Pietro,Ilaria Cosorich,Roberto Ferrarese,Diego Saita,Massimo Clementi,Filippo Canducci,Marika Falcone +8 more
TL;DR: Modifications of the gut microbiota induced by oral treatment with Lactobacillaceae-enriched probiotic VSL#3, alone or in combination with retinoic acid (RA), protect NOD mice from T1D by affecting inflammasome at the intestinal level and provide a link between dietary factors, microbiota composition, intestinal inflammation, and immune homeostasis in autoimmune diabetes.
