Journal ArticleDOI
The Burden of Cryptosporidium Diarrheal Disease among Children < 24 Months of Age in Moderate/High Mortality Regions of Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia, Utilizing Data from the Global Enteric Multicenter Study (GEMS).
Samba O. Sow,Khitam Muhsen,Dilruba Nasrin,William C. Blackwelder,Yukun Wu,Tamer H. Farag,Sandra Panchalingam,Dipika Sur,Anita K. M. Zaidi,Abu Syed Golam Faruque,Debasish Saha,Richard A. TL;DR: The enormous African/Asian Cryptosporidium disease burden warrants investments to develop vaccines, diagnostics and therapies.
Journal ArticleDOI
Immunoglobulin G subclass and antibody avidity responses in Malian children immunized with Plasmodium falciparum apical membrane antigen 1 vaccine candidate FMP2.1/AS02 A
Andrea A. Berry,Eric R. Gottlieb,Eric R. Gottlieb,Bourema Kouriba,Issa Diarra,Mahamadou A. Thera,Sheetij Dutta,Drissa Coulibaly,Amed Ouattara,Amadou Niangaly,Abdoulaye K. Kone,Karim Traore,Youssouf Tolo,Vladimir Mishcherkin,Lorraine Soisson,Carter L. Diggs,William C. Blackwelder,Matthew B. Laurens,Marcelo B. Sztein,Ogobara K. Doumbo,Christopher V. Plowe,Christopher V. Plowe,Kirsten E. Lyke +22 more
TL;DR: Neither IgG subclass nor avidity was associated with the modest, strain-specific efficacy elicited by this blood stage malaria vaccine; however, IgG3, known to have the shortest half-life of the IgG subclasses, might be the most temporally relevant indicator of ongoing malaria exposure when examining antibody responses to AMA1.
Journal ArticleDOI
Characteristics and outcomes of children with congenital heart disease needing diaphragm plication.
Cortney B. Foster,Antonio G. Cabrera,Dayanand Bagdure,William C. Blackwelder,Brady S. Moffett,Adrian Holloway,Vladimir Mishcherkin,Adnan Bhutta +7 more
TL;DR: Diaphragm plication after surgery for congenital heart disease is associated with longer hospital length of stay and increased cost, and the likelihood of plication increases with younger age and higher procedure complexity.
Journal ArticleDOI
The Impact of Dedicated Cardiac Intensive Care Units on Outcomes in Pediatric Cardiac Surgery: A Virtual Pediatric Systems Database Analysis
Dayanand Bagdure,Jason W. Custer,Cortney B. Foster,William C. Blackwelder,Vladimir Mishcherkin,Allison Portenoy,Adnan Bhutta +6 more
TL;DR: There was no difference in outcomes for children undergoing cardiac surgery based on the unit type (dedicated CICU or mixed unit), and there was a direct relationship between STS-EACTS risk category and death rate in both units.
