Journal ArticleDOI
Neuronal somatic ATP release triggers neuron–satellite glial cell communication in dorsal root ganglia
TL;DR: Strong evidence is provided that somata of DRG neurons actively release transmitters and play a crucial role in bidirectional communication between neurons and surrounding satellite glial cells, and this results suggest that, contrary to the conventional view, neuronal somata have a significant role in cell–cell signaling.
Journal ArticleDOI
Toll-like Receptor 3 and Geographic Atrophy in Age-Related Macular Degeneration
Zhenglin Yang,Charity A. Stratton,Peter J. Francis,Mark E. Kleinman,Perciliz L. Tan,Daniel Gibbs,Zongzhong Tong,Haoyu Chen,Haoyu Chen,Ryan Constantine,Xian Yang,Xian Yang,Yuhong Chen,Yuhong Chen,Jiexi Zeng,Jiexi Zeng,Lisa Davey,Xiang Ma,V. S. Zack,Nicholas Katsanis,Jayakrishna Ambati,Kang Zhang,Kang Zhang,Kang Zhang +47 more
TL;DR: The results suggest a role of viral dsRNA in the development of geographic atrophy and point to the potential toxic effects of short-interfering-RNA therapies in the eye.
Journal ArticleDOI
Mutant prominin 1 found in patients with macular degeneration disrupts photoreceptor disk morphogenesis in mice
Zhenglin Yang,Yali Chen,Concepción Lillo,Jeremy Chien,Zhengya Yu,Michel Michaelides,Michel Michaelides,Martin Klein,Kim A. Howes,Yang Li,Yuuki Kaminoh,Haoyu Chen,Chao Zhao,Yuhong Chen,Youssef T. Munier,Anthony T. Moore,Anthony T. Moore,David G. Birch,Wolfgang Baehr,David M. Hunt,David S. Williams,David S. Williams,Kang Zhang,Kang Zhang +36 more
TL;DR: Immunoprecipitation studies showed that PROM1 interacted with protocadherin 21 (PCDH21), a photoreceptor-specific cadherin, and with actin filaments, both of which play critical roles in disk membrane morphogenesis, and indicate a possible role forPROM1 and PCDH21 in macular degeneration.
Journal ArticleDOI
Promoter polymorphism of the erythropoietin gene in severe diabetic eye and kidney complications
Zongzhong Tong,Zhenglin Yang,Shrena Patel,Haoyu Chen,Daniel Gibbs,Xian Yang,V. S. Hau,Yuuki Kaminoh,Jennifer Harmon,Erik G. Pearson,Jeanette Buehler,Yuhong Chen,Baifeng Yu,Nicholas H. TL;DR: It is demonstrated that the T allele of SNP rs1617640 in the promoter of the EPO gene is significantly associated with PDR and ESRD in three European-American cohorts.
Journal ArticleDOI
Common variants near ABCA1 and in PMM2 are associated with primary open-angle glaucoma
Yuhong Chen,Ying Lin,Eranga N. Vithana,Liyun Jia,Xianbo Zuo,Tien Yin Wong,Li Jia Chen,Xianjun Zhu,Pancy O. S. Tam,Bo Gong,Shaohong Qian,Zheng Li,Xiaoqi Liu,Baskaran Mani,Qian Luo,Celeste Guzman,Christopher Kai-Shun Leung,Xiaobo Li,Wenjun Cao,Quanyao Yang,Clement C Y Tham,Yilian Cheng,Xuejun Zhang,Ningli Wang,Tin Aung,Chiea Chuen Khor,Chi Pui Pang,Xinghuai Sun,Zhenglin Yang +28 more
TL;DR: Both ABCA1 and PMM2 are expressed in the trabecular meshwork, optic nerve and other ocular tissues, a finding consistent with it having a role in the development of glaucoma.
