Deposits of clastic carbonate-dominated (calciclastic) sedimentary slope systems in the rock record have been identified mostly as linearly-consistent carbonate apron deposits, even though most ancient clastic carbonate slope deposits fit the submarine fan systems better. Calciclastic submarine fans are consequently rarely described and are poorly understood. Subsequently, very little is known especially in mud-dominated calciclastic submarine fan systems. Presented in this study are a sedimentological core and petrographic characterisation of samples from eleven boreholes from the Lower Carboniferous of Bowland Basin (Northwest England) that reveals a >250 m thick calciturbidite complex deposited in a calciclastic submarine fan setting. Seven facies are recognised from core and thin section characterisation and are grouped into three carbonate turbidite sequences. They include: 1) Calciturbidites, comprising mostly of highto low-density, wavy-laminated bioclast-rich facies; 2) low-density densite mudstones which are characterised by planar laminated and unlaminated muddominated facies; and 3) Calcidebrites which are muddy or hyper-concentrated debrisflow deposits occurring as poorly-sorted, chaotic, mud-supported floatstones. We present a technique for measuring the interfacial fracture energy, Ci, between a hard thin film and a soft substrate. A periodic array of hard thin islands is fabricated on a soft substrate, which is then subjected to uniaxial tension under an optical microscope. When the applied strain reaches a critical value, delamination between the islands and the substrate starts from the edge of the islands. As the strain is increased, the interfacial cracks grow in a stable fashion. At a given applied strain, the width of the delaminated region is a unique function of the interfacial fracture energy. We have calculated the energy release rate driving the delamination as a function of delamination width, island size, island thickness, and applied strain. For a given materials system, this relationship allows determination of the interfacial fracture energy from a measurement of the delamination width. The technique is demonstrated by measuring the interfacial fracture energy of plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition SiNx islands on a polyimide substrate. We anticipate that this technique will find application in the flexible electronics industry where hard islands on soft substrates are a common architecture to protect active devices from fracture. Islands stretch test for measuring the interfacial fracture energy between a hard film and a soft substrate

Certain organic molecules, such as alkanethiols, can adsorb On metals to form monolayers. Sometimes domains appear in the monolayers. For example, an incomplete monolayer may form islands, and a mixed-composition monolayer may separate into distinct phases. During annealing, the molecules diffuse on the metal surface. The domain boundary energy drives the domains to coarsen. The contact potential between the dissimilar domains drives the domains to refine. On the basis of existing experimental information, we suggest that the competition between coarsening and refining should stabilize certain domain patterns. We formulate a free energy functional to include the effects of mixed species, domain boundary, and contact potential. An approximate energy minimisation estimates the equilibrium domain size. We derive a diffusion equation consistent with the free energy functional. The numerical solution of the diffusion equation follows the evolution of the monolayers from a random initial concentration field to patterns of dots and stripes. We also discuss the practical implications of the theory and, in particular the possibility of guided self-assembly.

Nanoscale Domain Stability in Organic Monolayers on Metals

Functional devices that use hydrogels as ionic conductors and elastomers as dielectrics have the advantage of being soft, stretchable, transparent, and biocompatible, making them ideal for biomedical applications. These devices are typically fabricated by manual assembly. Techniques for the manufacturing of soft materials have generally not looked at integrating multiple dissimilar materials. Silane coupling agents have recently shown promise for creating strong bonds between hydrogels and elastomers but have yet to be used in the extrusion printing of complex devices that integrate both hydrogels and elastomers. Here, we demonstrate the viability of silane coupling agents in a system with the rheology and functional composition necessary for three-dimensional (3D) extrusion printing of hydrogel-elastomer materials, specifically polyacrylamide (PAAm) hydrogel and poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) hydrophobic elastomer. By introducing a charge-neutral surfactant in the PDMS and adjusting silane concentrations in the PAAm, cast material samples demonstrate strong adhesion. We were also able to achieve an interfacial toughness of up to Γ = 193 ± 6.3 J/m2 for a fully extrusion printed PAAm hydrogel-on-PDMS bilayer. This result demonstrates that an integration strategy based on silane coupling agents makes it possible for extrusion printing of a wide variety of hydrogel and silicone elastomers.
