Journal ArticleDOI
Creasing instability of elastomer films
TL;DR: In this article, the creasing instability of elastomer films under compression was studied by a combination of experiment and numerical simulation, where the authors attach a stress-free film on a much thicker and stiffer pre-stretched substrate.
Journal ArticleDOI
Persistent step-flow growth of strained films on vicinal substrates.
Wei Hong,Ho Nyung Lee,Mina Yoon,Hans M. Christen,Douglas H. Lowndes,Zhigang Suo,Zhenyu Zhang,Zhenyu Zhang,Zhenyu Zhang +8 more
TL;DR: The model rationalizes the diverse growth modes observed in pulsed laser deposition of SrRuO3 on SrTiO3 and predicts the existence of concurrent step bunching and island formation, a new growth mode that competes with step flow for phase space, and shows that the deposition flux and temperature must be chosen within a window to achieve persistent step flow.
Journal ArticleDOI
A finite element analysis of the motion and evolution of voids due to strain and electromigration induced surface diffusion
TL;DR: In this paper, a two dimensional finite element method for computing the motion and evolution of voids by surface diffusion in an elastic, electrically conducting solid is presented. But the method does not consider the effects of mass flow on the lattice of the crystal.
Journal ArticleDOI
Dielectric elastomer actuators with elastomeric electrodes
Michael Bozlar,Christian Punckt,Sibel Korkut,Jian Zhu,Choon Chiang Foo,Zhigang Suo,Ilhan A. Aksay +6 more
TL;DR: In this paper, thin layers of a conducting silicone elastomer were attached to prestrained films of an acrylic dielectric elastomers and achieved voltage-actuated areal strains over 70%.
Journal ArticleDOI
New directions in mechanics
Michael E. Kassner,Sia Nemat-Nasser,Zhigang Suo,Gang Bao,J. Charles Barbour,L. Catherine Brinson,Horacio D. Espinosa,Huajian Gao,Steve Granick,Peter Gumbsch,Kyung-Suk Kim,Wolfgang G. Knauss,Ladislas P. Kubin,James S. Langer,Ben C Larson,Lakshminarayanan Mahadevan,Arun Majumdar,Salvatore Torquato,Frank van Swol +18 more
TL;DR: The Division of Materials Sciences and Engineering of the US Department of Energy (DOE) sponsored a workshop to identify cutting-edge research needs and opportunities, enabled by the application of theoretical and applied mechanics as mentioned in this paper.
