Abstract: Management of severe acute asthma attacks in children sometimes bring difficulties to the physician. Some current treatment strategies have focused on intravenous magnesium sulphate administration in patients nonresponding to therapy with beta-2 agonists and corticosteroids. The use and efficacy of this drug has been discussed in this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial consisting of 20 children with moderate to severe acute asthma exacerbation admitted to the emergency department in Dicle University Hospital, Turkey. Magnesium sulphate infusion therapy of 40 mg/kg doses (maximum 2 g) or an equivalent volume of normal saline solution were administered to randomly assigned 10 patients in each group to the selected patients who were being treated for an acute asthma exacerbation with a peak expiratory flow rate (PEFR) less than 60% of the predicted value after receiving three beta-2 adrenergic nebulizer treatments (salbutamol) given at an interval of 20 minutes each. Vital signs, PEFR and physical examinations were serially recorded at 15 minutes intervals for a total of 90 minutes after the initiation of magnesium sulphate therapy. At 30 minutes, compared with the placebo group, the magnesium sulphate receiving group had lower clinical asthma scores (4.0+/-0.5 vs. 5.5+/-0.5, p = 0.0002) and a significantly greater percentage of improvement from baseline in PEFR (43.0+/-6.3% vs. 14.6+/-3.7%, p = 0.0002). These significant changes persisted at 45, 60, 75 and 90 minutes. No significant side effects were observed. In conclusion, severe asthmatic cases may benefit from magnesium sulphate therapy when beta-2 agonists are inadequate in preventing deterioration.

Abstract: Objective. To compare handmade and computer-aided design–computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM)-fabricated fixed dental prostheses (FDPs) composed of a particulate filler composite. Material and methods. Handmade FDPs were made of restorative composite (Z 100) and CAD-CAM-fabricated FDPs were made of commercial CAD-CAM blocks (VITA Temp) and two experimental CAD-CAM blocks of particulate filler composite. Experimental CAD composite A was prepared by mixing 31.2 wt.% of dimethacrylate resin with 68.7 wt.% of filler particles of barium oxide silicate (BaSiO2). Experimental CAD composite B was prepared by mixing 25.6 wt.% of dimethacrylate resin with 74.3 wt.% of filler particles of BaSiO2. Six groups were fabricated (n = 6 in each); FDPs were statically loaded until final fracture. Results. Abstract: The aims of this study were considered under three headings. The first was to elicit misconception that science and physics student teachers (pre-service teachers) had about the terms, ‘‘inertial mass’’, ‘‘gravitational mass’’, ‘‘gravity’’, ‘‘gravitational force’’ and “weight”. The second was to understand how prior learning affected their misconceptions, and whether teachers’ misconceptions affected their students’ learning. The third was to determine the differences between science and physics student teachers’ understanding levels related to mass and gravity, and between their logical thinking ability levels and their attitudes toward physics lessons. A total of 267 science and physics student teachers participated in the study. Data collection instruments included the physics concept test, the logical thinking ability test and physics attitude scale. All instruments were administered to the participants at the end of the 3rd semester of their university years. The physics test consisting of paper and pencil test involving 16 questions was designed, but only four questions were related to mass and gravity; the second test consisted of 10 questions with two stages. The third test however, consisted of 15 likert type items. As a result of the analysis undertaken, it was found that student teachers had serious misconceptions about inertia, gravity, gravitational acceleration, gravitational force and weight concepts. The results also revealed that student teachers generally had positive attitudes toward physics lessons, and their logical thinking level was fairly good.

Abstract: There have not been yet enough studies about effects of beta glucan and gliclazide on oxidative stress created by streptozotocin in the brain and sciatic nerve of diabetic rats. The aim of this paper was to investigate the antioxidant effects of gliclazide and beta glucan on oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation created by streptozotosin in brain and sciatic nerve. Total of 42 rats were divided into 6 groups including control, diabetic untreated (DM) (only STZ, diabetic), STZ (DM) + beta glucan, STZ (DM) + gliclazide, only beta glucan treated (no diabetic), and only gliclazide treated (no diabetic). The brain and sciatic nerve tissue samples were analyzed for malondialdehyde (MDA), total oxidant status (TOS), total antioxidant status (TAS), oxidative stress index (OSI), and paraoxonase (PON-1) levels. We found a significant increase in MDA, TOS, and OSI along with a reduction in TAS level, catalase, and PON-1 activities in brain and sciatic nerve of streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. Also, this study shows that in terms of these parameters both gliclazide and beta glucan have a neuroprotective effect on the brain and sciatic nerve of the streptozotocin-induced diabetic rat. Our conclusion was that gliclazide and beta glucan have antioxidant effects on the brain and sciatic nerve of the streptozotocin-induced diabetic rat.
