Abstract: Ubiquitous computing is the method of augmenting and improving work practices and knowledge sharing, by making computers of all scales, available but invisible throughout the physical environment, while amplifying human-to-human communication. Personal systems, such as PDAs and cell phones, give users access to computing resources regardless of their location. Handheld computers are being transformed from personal electronic agendas into mobile communication devices with intermittent network connectivity. Thus, they are becoming a natural medium to tap into an ubiquitous computing infrastructure. However, handhelds most often operate disconnected from the network thus reducing the opportunities for spontaneous interoperation with other peers or web services, which is a desirable feature of ubicomp environments. Autonomous agents can enable spontaneous collaboration by representing users, as well as devices or services available through the Web, which has become an ubiquitous medium for information sharing. An agent acts on behalf of the user while he is disconnected, and represents services added to the environment, thus allowing the physical integration and interoperability of these entities. We present the SALSA framework, which allows developers to implement simple agents for ubicomp systems. These agents use an expressive communication language based on XML, which provides protocols for locating and interacting with Web services even when the user is disconnected.

Abstract: A geophysical and geochemical study was carried out in the Maneadero aquifer, Baja California, Mexico, with the aim of identifying potential recharge locations for reclaimed water (RW). This coastal aquifer shows a significant decline in water quality, both as a result of salinization and the pollution by nitrates. Total dissolved solids (TDS) in an extreme case increased from 4 g l−1 in 2000 to 27 g l−1 in 2011. Nitrate as N–NO3, reaches 46 mg l−1. Based on their geochemistry and location, four water-quality zones are identified: (a) fresh water with TDS ≈ 1 g l−1 in the upper creeks, (b) mixture between seawater and freshwater in the coast-proximal sections, (c) water significantly enriched in nitrate below and adjacent to the town of Maneadero, and (d) brackish water with no signs of current interaction with freshwater. The 3D geophysics identifies the influence of modern recharge areas and also buried flow-paths down to at least 30 m depth. The locations best suitable for aquifer recharge are those with equal or higher TDS concentrations (>2.5 g l−1) than RW, which are located at the brackish water zone and/or at the coastal limits of the mixing zones.

Abstract: In 1868 Kelvin observed that a sphere moving on the axis of uniformly rotating water takes with it a column of liquid as if this were a rigid mass. This observation anticipates by thirty years Hough's analytical demonstration that steady slow motion in a rotating fluid is two-dimensional, and by fifty years Taylor's perception and experimental demonstration of the consequences thereof. This note discusses Kelvin's unpublished observation in the context of his lifelong interest on rotatory motion and later investigations on the subject by Hough, Proudman, Taylor, and others.

Abstract: User location forecasting is central to establish context in proactive mobile applications. Knowing where the user will be at a given time enables standby action triggers ahead of time. User location exhibits periodic patterns grouped by time of day, day of the week, month of the year, etc. This characteristic has been exploited to model user location as a Markov process with great accuracy. Using yearly data from public sources it was possible to predict user location in a time frame of 8 hours with accuracy of up to 69%. One assumption of the above modeling is that user location is stationary in time. However, it is more natural to assume user location patterns may vary over time. For example one user may change job, or the relationship status, and avoid certain places frecuented in the past. In this paper we propose a learning mechanism adapting user location forecasting to behavior changes over time. Our model is able to predict for up to 94 weeks with 43% of accuracy.
