TL;DR: A process algebra RCCS, in the style of CCS, where processes can backtrack is obtained, and it is shown that, given a past, a computation step can be taken back if and only if it leads to a causally equivalent past.
Abstract: One obtains in this paper a process algebra RCCS, in the style of CCS, where processes can backtrack. Backtrack, just as plain forward computation, is seen as a synchronization and incurs no additional cost on the communication structure. It is shown that, given a past, a computation step can be taken back if and only if it leads to a causally equivalent past.

TL;DR: It is shown in particular that, given any desired product mix, it is possible to start the system with enough jobs in process so that some machines will be fully utilized in steady-state and the productivity is optimal.
Abstract: Timed event-graphs, a special class of timed Petri nets, are used for modelling and analyzing job-shop systems. The modelling allows the steady-state performance of the system to be evaluated under a deterministic and cyclic production process. Given any fixed processing times, the productivity (i.e., production rate) of the system can be determined from the initial state. It is shown in particular that, given any desired product mix, it is possible to start the system with enough jobs in process so that some machines will be fully utilized in steady-state. These machines are called bottleneck machines, since they limit the throughput of the system. In that case, the system works at the maximal rate and the productivity is optimal. The minimal number of jobs in process allowing optimal functioning of the system is further specified as an integer linear programming problem. An efficient heuristic algorithm is developed to obtain a near-optimal solution. >

TL;DR: A new operational ocean analysis/reanalysis system (ORA-S3) has been implemented at ECMWF as discussed by the authors, which is continuously maintained up to 11 days behind real time and is used to initialize seasonal forecasts as well as to provide a historical representation of the ocean for climate studies.
Abstract: A new operational ocean analysis/reanalysis system (ORA-S3) has been implemented at ECMWF. The reanalysis, started from 1 January 1959, is continuously maintained up to 11 days behind real time and is used to initialize seasonal forecasts as well as to provide a historical representation of the ocean for climate studies. It has several innovative features, including an online bias-correction algorithm, the assimilation of salinity data on temperature surfaces, and the assimilation of altimeter-derived sea level anomalies and global sea level trends. It is designed to reduce spurious climate variability in the resulting ocean reanalysis due to the nonstationary nature of the observing system, while still taking advantage of the observation information. The new analysis system is compared with the previous operational version; the equatorial temperature biases are reduced and equatorial currents are improved. The impact of assimilation in the ocean state is discussed by diagnosis of the assimilatio...

TL;DR: The Conflict-free Replicated Data Type (CRDT) as discussed by the authors is a data type that is guaranteed to converge in a self-stabilising manner, despite any number of failures.
Abstract: Replicating data under Eventual Consistency (EC) allows any replica to accept updates without remote synchronisation. This ensures performance and scalability in large-scale distributed systems (e.g., clouds). However, published EC approaches are ad-hoc and error-prone. Under a formal Strong Eventual Consistency (SEC) model, we study sufficient conditions for convergence. A data type that satisfies these conditions is called a Conflict-free Replicated Data Type (CRDT). Replicas of any CRDT are guaranteed to converge in a self-stabilising manner, despite any number of failures. This paper formalises two popular approaches (state- and operation-based) and their relevant sufficient conditions. We study a number of useful CRDTs, such as sets with clean semantics, supporting both add and remove operations, and consider in depth the more complex Graph data type. CRDT types can be composed to develop large-scale distributed applications, and have interesting theoretical properties.

TL;DR: Improvements in image-based visual servo using image moments are presented, and the analytical form of the interaction matrix related to the moments computed from a set of coplanar points is derived.
Abstract: Moments are generic (and usually intuitive) descriptors that can be computed from several kinds of objects, defined either from closed contours or from a set of points. In this paper, we present improvements in image-based visual servo using image moments. First, the analytical form of the interaction matrix related to the moments computed from a set of coplanar points is derived, and we show that it is different from the form obtained previously, using coplanar closed contours. Six visual features are selected to design a decoupled control scheme when the object is parallel to the image plane. This nice property is then generalized to the case where the desired object position is not parallel to the image plane. Finally, experimental results are presented to illustrate the validity of our approach and its robustness, with respect to modeling errors.
