TL;DR: The study establishes a direct proportionality relationship between concentration/length of phytochelatins and root Cd concentrations, upto threshold limits, in E. crassipes.
Abstract: Impact of root Cd concentration on production of cysteine, non-protein thiols (NP-SH), glutathione (GSH), reduced glutathione (GSSG), and phytochelatins (PCs) in Eichhornia crassipes exposed to different dilutions of brass and electroplating industry effluent (25%, 50%, and 75%), and synthetic metal solutions of Cd alone (1, 2.5, and 3.5 ppm) and with Cr (1 ppm Cd + 1 ppm Cr, 2.5 ppm Cd + 3 ppm Cr, and 3.5 ppm Cd + 4 ppm Cr) was assessed in a 45 days study. Different treatments were used to understand and compare differential antioxidant defense response of plant under practical drainage (effluent) and experimental synthetic solutions. The production of NP-SH and cysteine was maximum under 2.5 ppm Cd + 3 ppm Cr treatments i.e., 1.78 µmol/g fw and 288 nmol/g fw, respectively. The content of GSH declined whereas that of GSSG increased progressively with exposure duration in all treatments. HPLC chromatograms revealed that the concentrations of PC2, PC3, and PC4 (248, 250, and 288 nmol-SH equiv.g-1 fw, respectively) were maximum under 1 ppm Cd, 1 ppm Cd + 1 ppm Cr, and 2.5 ppm Cd + 3 ppm Cr treatments, respectively. PC2, PC3, and PC4 concentrations increased with Cd accumulation in the range 812-1354 µg/g dry wt, 1354-2032 µg/g dry wt and 2032-3200 µg/g dry wt, respectively. Thus, the study establishes a direct proportionality relationship between concentration/length of phytochelatins and root Cd concentrations, upto threshold limits, in E. crassipes.

TL;DR: In this article, an analysis of the interionic potential is performed to study the static and thermal properties of KClKBr and KBrKI mixed crystals for the entire range of composition.
Abstract: An analysis of the interionic potential is performed to study the static and thermal properties of KClKBr and KBrKI mixed crystals for the entire range of composition. The interionic potential consists of the long-range Coulomb and three body interaction, the short-range van der Waals attraction, and the overlap repulsion, effective up to the second neighbour ions. Instead of using the BM-type short-range potential the Hafemeister and Zarht (HZ)-type repulsive potential is considered between the nearest as well as between the next nearest neighbours. The three body charge transfer parameter f(r) and repulsive hardness parameters are evaluated using respectively the Cochran formula and overlap integrals. The van der Waals interaction coefficients are determined using the Slater-Kirkwood variational approach. The calculated values of cohesive energy, bulk modulus, and the pressure derivatives of bulk modulus for the mixed crystals under study agree fairly well with available experimental data. The results achieved by previous investigators are also shown for the sake of comparison with the present and experimental investigations.

TL;DR: It is revealed that soil solarization could be exploited for nutrient management and soilborne pests control, with a better vigor index of vegetable nursery, along with the response of cauliflower seedlings following solarization.
Abstract: The effect of soil solarization on physical, chemical and biological properties of soil was studied, along with the response of cauliflower seedlings following solarization. Nursery beds were covered with transparent polyethylene sheet and soil temperature and moisture were recorded. Soil samples were collected five times for analysis. Three cauliflower nurseries were raised at 30-day intervals; germination was recorded 10 days after sowing and seedling length 30 days after sowing. The maximum temperature in solarized soil ranged from 40.2–47.2°C, with an increase of 5.2° to 9.9°C over non-solarized soil. There was a conservation of 5.48% moisture in solarized soil as compared with non-solarized. Solarization significantly increased electrical conductivity, organic carbon, nitrogen and potassium over pre-solarized soil. The mean pH, EC, Ca, Mg, N, P, K and C recorded in solarized soil was higher than in non-solarized. Soil solarization reduced the population of fungi from 25.68 x 104 to 4.8 x 104, bacteria from 20.28 x 106 to 5.66 x 106, actinomycetes from 31.60 x 105 to 4.40 x 105, and reduction in population was recorded even after 90 days, when compared with non-solarized soil. Solarization effectively reduced (>97%) population of plant parasitic and free living nematodes. Cauliflower seedlings in solarized soil had a better vigor index than non-solarized soil. Present findings reveal that soil solarization could be exploited for nutrient management and soilborne pests control, with a better vigor index of vegetable nursery.

TL;DR: Based on inter-cluster distances, crossing between BGM-419 and KPG-33 are expected to produce a broad spectrum of variability in segregating generations to isolate transgressive segregants for yield and its components.
Abstract: The observations on 80 chickpea genotypes collected from different geographical areas were recorded for eighteen characters. The data were subjected to divergence analysis. Based on D2 values 80 genotypes were grouped into eleven clusters. The highest numbers of genotypes were included in cluster I (60) followed by cluster II (7). No definite relationship was observed between genetic diversity and geographical distribution. Based on inter-cluster distances, crossing between BGM-419 and KPG-33 are expected to produce a broad spectrum of variability in segregating generations to isolate transgressive segregants for yield and its components.
