Abstract: We consider the ultra light pseudo Nambu-Goldstone boson appearing in the late time cosmological phase transition theories as a dark matter candidate. Since it is almost massless, its nature is more wave like than particle like. Hence we apply quantum mechanics to study how they form the galactic halos. Three predictions are made; (1)the mass profile $\rho\sim r^{-1.6}$, (2)there are ripple-like fine structures in rotation curve, (3) the rotation velocity times ripple's wave length is largely galaxy independent. We compare the rotation curves predicted by our theory with the data observed.

TL;DR: Computer simulation and experimental results verify that the proposed PWM control scheme is suitable for high power and high voltage three-level GTO inverters applied to induction motor drives.
Abstract: This paper presents a new PWM method for the three-level GTO inverters based on the space voltage vectors. With the proposed PWM method, we can minimize the harmonic components of the output voltage by avoiding the minimum pulse width limitation problem of the GTO thyristors and keeping the voltage balancing of the DC-link capacitors. The principle of the proposed PWM method and the voltage vector output sequences are described in detail. Computer simulation and experimental results verify that the proposed PWM method is suitable for high voltage and large capacity three-level GTO inverters applied to induction motor drives.

TL;DR: It is shown that visible matter, in galaxies with flat rotation curves, has a mass fraction 2% \char21{}10% and it is confined within the distance fraction 10%\char21 {}20%.
Abstract: In a previous work, we investigated the rotation curves of galaxies assuming that the dark matter consists of ultralight bosons appearing in ``late-time phase transition'' theory. Generalizing this work, we consider the effect of visible matter and classify the types of rotation curves as we vary the fraction of the mass and extension of visible matter. We show that visible matter, in galaxies with flat rotation curves, has a mass fraction 2%\char21{}10% and it is confined within the distance fraction 10%\char21{}20%.

TL;DR: Recent advances provide additional new insights into distinct pathogenetic mechanisms in AS and ReA that arise from a complex interplay between genetic factors including HLA-B27 and environmental factors.
Abstract: Purpose of review The hallmark of ankylosing spondylitis is acute and chronic spinal inflammation initiating in the sacroiliac joints, often coupled with enthesitis, presenting as chronic inflammation at the sites of ligamentous and tendinous insertions into bone. Peripheral joint synovitis can be a prominent feature as well. Reactive arthritis is a sterile synovitis arising after an extra-articular infection of enteric or urogenital tracts. HLA-B27 has been known for about the past 30 years to be associated with ankylosing spondylitis and reactive arthritis, but the pathogenesis of ankylosing spondylitis and reactive arthritis is still not well defined. Although the clinical manifestations of ankylosing spondylitis and reactive arthritis may differ, this update discusses the two diseases together and focuses on recent evidence in both. Recent findings With respect to HLA-B27 several recent studies address arthritogenic peptides, molecular mimicry, and aberrant forms of B27. Several candidate genes in addition to B27 have been implicated in recent genetic studies. With respect to bacterial infection, recent findings in bacterial antigenicity, host response through interactions of antigenpresenting cells, T cells, and cytokines are providing new understanding of host—pathogen interactions and the pathogenesis of arthritis. Endogenous host factors such as proteoglycans may play a role as autoantigens and contribute to chronic inflammation on that basis. Summary Recent advances provide additional new insights into distinct pathogenetic mechanisms in AS and ReA that arise from a complex interplay between genetic factors including HLA-B27 and environmental factors.

Abstract: The MOSFET synchronous rectification in the active clamp forward converter is presented. The active clamp forward converter has little dead time during the OFF time of the main switch and it is suitable for MOSFET synchronous rectification compared with other forward converter topologies. Using the MOSFET synchronous rectification on the active clamp forward converter with 3.3 V output and 500 kHz switching frequency, the improvement of efficiency is achieved from a light load to a heavy load compared with the conventional synchronous rectification forward converter using a third winding reset scheme. >

Abstract: A concurrent design method of mechanical structure and control is developed for two-link high speed robots. An integrated design approach to achieve high speed positioning is explored, in which comprehensive design parameters describing arm link geometry, actuator locations, and feedback gains are optimized with respect to the settling time of the system. First, a two-link, nonrigid arm is analyzed and a simple dynamic model representing rapid positioning processes is obtained. Optimal feedback gains minimizing the sealing time are obtained as functions of structural parameters involved in the dynamic model. The structural parameters are then optimized using a nonlinear programming technique in order to obtain an overall optimal performance. Based on the optimal design, a prototype high speed robot is built and tested

TL;DR: A fuzzy membership function (FMF) based neural network incorporating a fuzzy-neural interpolating network is proposed to approximate the nonlinear mapping, where the structure of the FMF network is similar to that of radial basis function neural network which is known to be very effective in the function approximation.
Abstract: It is shown that there exists a nonlinear mapping which transforms image features and their changes to the desired camera motion without measuring of the relative distance between the camera and the object. This nonlinear mapping can eliminate several difficulties occurring in computing the inverse of the feature Jacobian as in the usual feature-based visual feedback control methods. Instead of analytically deriving the closed form of this mapping, a fuzzy membership function (FMF) based neural network incorporating a fuzzy-neural interpolating network is proposed to approximate the nonlinear mapping, where the structure of the FMF network is similar to that of radial basis function neural network which is known to be very effective in the function approximation. Several FMF networks are trained to be capable of tracking a moving object in the whole workspace along the line of sight. For an effective implementation of the proposed FMF network, an image feature selection process is investigated, and the required fuzzy membership functions are designed. Finally, several numerical examples are presented to show the validity of the proposed visual servoing method. >

TL;DR: The conductivity, transmittance, and mechanical properties of polypyrrole and polyaniline-nylon 6 (PAN) composite films were investigated in this article.
Abstract: Highly transparent and conducting polypyrrole–(PPy–N) and polyaniline–nylon 6 (PAN) composite films could be easily obtained by immersing nylon 6 films containing pyrrole or aniline into an oxidant solution such as aqueous FeCl3 solution or aqueous (NH4)2S2O8 solution containing HCl. The conductivity, transmittance, and mechanical properties of these composite films were affected by the preparative conditions. The maximum conductivity and transmittance of the PPy–N composite films were 10−3 S/cm and about 75% at 550 nm, and in the case of the PA–N composite films, 10−2 S/cm and 75%, respectively. The morphology of PPy–N and PA–N composite films depended on the polymerization conditions, which might be due to the difference in the polymerization speed of pyrrole or aniline in polymer matrices. These PPy–N and PA–N composite films exhibited good environmental stability and excellent mechanical properties. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

TL;DR: Results indicate that activation of p38 MAPK is specifically required for translocation of Bax to the mitochondria, and both JNK and p38MAPK are involved in phosphorylation of Bcl-2 in response to combination treatment with gamma-radiation and As2O3, and that ROS is a critical regulator of p 38 MAPK and JNK activations.
Abstract: Enhancement of radiation response is possible to be achieved by combination treatment with therapeutic drugs. Previously we have shown that As2O3 in combination with ionizing radiation enhanced radiation response in cervical cancer cells. In this study, we further investigated molecular mechanism of synergistic enhancement of radiation response in combination with As2O3. The combination treatment of HeLa cells induced translocation of Bax to the mitochondria and a marked phosphorylation of Bcl-2. p38 MAPK and JNK were also found to be activated in response to the combination treatment. Pretreatment of PD169316, a p38 MAPK specific inhibitor, completely attenuated the combination treatment-induced mitochondrial relocalization of Bax, and altered Bcl-2 phosphorylation. Moreover, pretreatment of SP600125, JNK specific inhibitor, clearly attenuated Bcl-2 phosphorylation, but did not affect Bax translocation to the mitochondria. In addition, N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC), a thiol-containing anti-oxidant, completely blocked p38 MAPK and JNK activations, Bax relocalization and Bcl-2 phosphorylation. These results indicate that activation of p38 MAPK is specifically required for translocation of Bax to the mitochondria, and both JNK and p38 MAPK are involved in phosphorylation of Bcl-2 in response to combination treatment with gamma-radiation and As2O3, and that ROS is a critical regulator of p38 MAPK and JNK activations. The molecular mechanism elucidated in this study may provide insight into the design of future combination cancer therapies to cells intrinsically less sensitive to radiation treatment.

Abstract: Chelate poly(vinyl alcohol)/poly(allyl amine) blend membrane was prepared and used for the separation of benzene/cyclohexane mixture by pervaporation processes. The coordination of benzene in the feed with cobalt in the membrane plays a major role in the separation of the mixture. Chelate poly(vinyl alcohol)/poly(allyl amine) blend membrane showed a preferential sorption toward benzene and was found to be more effective for permeating benzene in the benzene/cyclohexane mixture than an original Schiff base poly(vinyl alcohol)/poly(allyl amine) membrane.

TL;DR: In this article, the catalytic activity for NO decomposition, H 2 -TPR, CO-TPR and O 2 TPD of various Cu/ zeolites and Cu/non-zeolites with different silica/alumina ratios and frameworks were examined.
Abstract: The catalytic activity for NO decomposition, H 2 -TPR, CO-TPR and O 2 -TPD of various Cu/ zeolites —especially mordenites— and Cu/non-zeolites with different silica/alumina ratios and frameworks were examined. The copper was loaded by impregnation of cupric nitrate solution, which was followed by redox treatment with H 2 /O 2 at 500°C. As a result, Cu 2+ ions and copper oxide crystals were found on the external surface of the zeolite crystals. The catalytic activities for the Cu/ zeolites increased with the Cu 2+ content as well as with the silica/alumina ratio. For Cu/non-zeolite catalysts, however, low activity was observed in spite of the presence of Cu 2+ . The reducibility of Cu 2+ ions and the desorptibility of extra-lattice oxygen from copper oxide located on the zeolites, which increased with the silica/alumina ratio, may be related to the catalytic activity. We observed through our study that active species for NO decomposition are not only copper ions such as Cu 2+ and Cu 2+ but also CuO. We propose that all of them are involved in the decomposition activity which is also strongly affected by the zeolite structure.

The substituents are introduced primarily at the C 6 position of the glucosamine unit in chitin, with a degree of substitution of approx. 30-50%. The three chitin derivatives are soluble in weakly acidic aqueous solutions, DHPC even in pure water

TL;DR: In this article, the effects of bridging groups on the band gaps of conjugated cyclic polymers were analyzed in terms of geometrical relaxations and electronic perturbations.
Abstract: Summary form only given. Theoretical investigation was performed to elucidate effects of the bridging groups on the band gaps of conjugated cyclic polymers. In addition to poly(para-phenylene) and heterocyclic polymers such as polythiophene, polypyrrole, and polyfuran, the polymers concerned in this study include the conjugated cyclic polymers which contain bridging groups of an XY/sub 2/ form (CH/sub 2/, CF/sub 2/, SiH/sub 2/ and SiF/sub 2/) or an X=Y form (C=CH/sub 2/, C=O and C=S). Geometrical structures of the polymers were optimized through semiempirical band calculations with AM1 Hamiltonians. A modified extended Huckel method was employed to obtain electronic structures of the polymers. Effects of the bridging groups on band gaps of the polymers were analyzed in terms of geometrical relaxations and electronic perturbations.

Abstract: This paper presents the analysis of the thermal gradients on the substrate of an integrated-circuit chip (telephone line interface chip) using thermographic imaging techniques. After taking the chip thermal image using a thermal camera and doing temperature calibration, an isothermal contour map of the chip region is drawn by digital image-processing techniques proposed in this paper. By overlaying the layout mask on the isothermal contour map of the chip region, each region of the chip is easily identified. This information is of great assistance to the designer while laying out the components on the chip. >

TL;DR: In this article, the compressive strength and the yield strength of dispersion-strengthened Al-Ti alloys were investigated by the mechanical alloying process and hot consolidation method, and their high temperature mechanical properties and oxidation properties were investigated.
Abstract: Dispersion-strengthened AlTi alloys were prepared by the mechanical alloying (MA) process and hot consolidation method, and their high temperature mechanical properties and oxidation properties were investigated. The tensile strengths of MA AlTi alloys were substantially higher than those of conventional Al alloys such as 7075 and 2024 grades at temperatures above 150°C. The compressive strength and the yield strength of MA Al8wt.%Ti at 350°C with a strain rate of 1 × 10 −4 s −1 were 233 MPa and 186 MPa respectively. The measured parabolic rate constant k p in oxidation of the MA Al8wt.%Ti alloy at 600°C was a much lower value, approximately 1.12 × 10 −13 g 2 cm −4 s −1 , which revealed that the oxidation resistance of the MA alloy was much better than that of the 2024-TB Al alloy.

TL;DR: In this article, the effects of deposition temperature on the formation, structure and electric properties of the Ta2O5 film were investigated for Al/Ta 2O5/ p-Si (MTS) capacitors.
Abstract: Tantalum oxide film formation by plasma-enhanced chemical vapour deposition (PECVD) using TaCl5 as a source material was examined. The effects of deposition temperature on the formation, structure and electric properties of the Ta2O5 film were investigated for Al/Ta2O5/ p-Si (MTS) capacitors. The deposition rate and refractive index increased with increasing deposition temperature. It was found that the structure of Ta2O5 deposited by PECVD was amorphous as-deposited. However, crystalline δ-Ta2O5 of hexagonal structure was formed by a 700 °C, 1 h heat treatment in argon. Capacitance and relative dielectric constant of the PECVD Ta2O5 were found to be 2.54 fF μm−2 and 23.5, respectively. The PECVD films obtained in this study have higher dielectric constants and remarkably better general film characteristics than those obtained by other deposition methods.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated the diffusion behavior of two polyimides (PIs) synthesized from 3,3,4,4′-benzophenonetetracarboxylic dianhydride (BTDA), 4,4-oxydianiline (ODA), and 4, 4′-diaminodiphenylsulfone (DDS) by the gravimetric method.
Abstract: Diffusion behaviors of two polyimides (PIs) synthesized from 3,3′,4,4′-benzophenonetetracarboxylic dianhydride (BTDA), 4,4′-oxydianiline (ODA), and 4,4′-diaminodiphenylsulfone (DDS) were investigated by the gravimetric method. The weight uptake of penetrants (solvents) was nearly proportional to the exposure time in solvent. This phenomenon was considered as the Case II diffusion (non-Fickian) mechanism. Two PI films had an affinity to N-methyl-2-pyrrolidinone (NMP) rather than to dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO). The solubility parameter differences between two polyimides and NMP are less than 5, whereas that between polyimides and DMSO are greater than 5, as calculated by Hoy's group contribution method. The solvent uptake of anisotropic films contributed to an increase in the thickness. The swollen amount of anisotropic films increased with the swelling temperature but tended to decrease with the imide content and the thickness of the anisotropic films. Isotropic films of two PIs did not swell in both NMP and DMSO. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors derived analytic solutions from one-dimensional fluid equations with arbitrary shear viscosity for the free and bounded presheaths in the strongly magnetized flowing plasma.
Abstract: Analytic solutions are derived from one‐dimensional fluid equations with arbitrary shear viscosity for the free and bounded presheaths in the strongly magnetized flowing plasma. Plasma density and flow velocity are obtained analytically in terms of position along the field line, Mach number (M∞), normalized viscosity (α), and size of bounded presheath. Simple analytic relations between the ratio (R) of sheath current and the flow Mach number [M∞ ≡ Vd/√(ZTe+Ti)/mi] are derived as R=exp(M∞/Mc), where Mc = 1/[1 +√α2/1+α arctan√1+α], with less than 5% accuracy for 0≤M∞≤0.5. By generating two free and two bounded presheaths by two Mach probes within two free presheaths generated by a larger object than Mach probes, one can measure α and M∞ simultaneously. The allowed range of α in terms of M∞ is obtained, and comparisons with previous numerical analyses are also made.

TL;DR: A circuit design for clamping the overvoltages across the GTOs in three-level GTO inverters to get blocking voltage balancing between the inner GTOs and the outer GTOs is presented.
Abstract: Three-level GTO inverters seem to be best suited for high power and high voltage AC applications. The circuit design of GTO power conversion systems is determined by the snubber circuits, which are necessary to release the GTOs from turn-on and turn-off switching losses and to keep the overvoltages to be caused by GTO switching low. However, the overvoltage snubber for the GTOs in a three-level inverter has not existed until now. In three-level inverter topology, the overvoltage across the inner GTOs can give rise to the larger blocking voltage than half that of the DC-link voltage, so that the power dissipation at turn off may be much larger than expected, and also switching failure of the GTOs may happen. This paper presents a circuit design for clamping the overvoltages across the GTOs in three-level GTO inverters. The proposed circuit has two roles as follows; one is to minimize the power dissipation in each GTO. It can be achieved by clamping the overvoltage to half that of the DC-link voltage as exactly as possible. The other is to get blocking voltage balancing between the inner GTOs and the outer GTOs. >

Abstract: We carried out the Schirmer test to measure objectively the amount of lacrimation among 51 clinically diagnosed parkinsonian patients (33 men and 18 women aged 50 to 79 years, mean 64) and 75 age-matched controls (42 men and 33 women aged 50 to 76, mean 62). Whatman No. 2 paper, prepared in precut strips 5mm by 35mm, was placed in the cul-de-sac for five minutes, after which the wetted length of the strip was studied. It was noted that the lacrimation amount decreased in patients with Parkinson's disease compared with controls: the average amount of lacrimation was 3.4 +/- 2.3mm in the former group and 8.1 +/- 6.5mm in the latter group (p < 0.01). We believe that the decrease in the amount of lacrimation is associated with emotional disturbance and autonomic dysfunction, and presume that the lacrimation may be under the control of the basal ganglia which has a connection with the superior salivatory nucleus downward and the limbic system upward.
