Abstract: [1] The spatial and diurnal variation of rainfall over Asia was investigated using the spaceborne radar data for four seasons during 1998–2003. The regional variation of the prevailing precipitation systems most closely associated with the maximum hourly rainfall was shown by examining the fine spatial distribution of rainfall amount and scale-based precipitation systems. Small precipitation systems ( 104 km2) developed mostly in the evening over nearly flat landmasses. Wide-spread systems with intense rain pixels developed over the foothills of the Himalayas in late night–early morning period, which was distinct from the daytime convection. Over ocean, in addition to the morning signature, spatially inhomogeneous and systematic characteristics were evident over the offshore region, for example, around the maritime continent. Large systems, which are strongly associated with terrain, have a great influence on the total number of rain pixels and the total amount of rainfall. For 86% of the region where large system is dominant the time of maximum rainfall is within 3 hours of the time of maximum rainfall for large systems.

Abstract: . A data set containing more than 6 years (February 2009 to present) of radiance spectra for carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) observations has been acquired by the Greenhouse gases Observing SATellite (GOSAT, available at http://data.gosat.nies.go.jp/GosatUserInterfaceGateway/guig/GuigPage/open.do ), nicknamed “Ibuki”, Thermal And Near infrared Sensor for carbon Observation Fourier Transform Spectrometer (TANSO-FTS). This paper provides updates on the performance of the satellite and TANSO-FTS sensor and describes important changes to the data product, which has recently been made available to users. With these changes the typical accuracy of retrieved column-averaged dry air mole fractions of CO2 and CH4 (XCO2 and XCH4, respectively) are 2 ppm or 0.5 % and 13 ppb or 0.7 %, respectively. Three major anomalies of the satellite system affecting TANSO-FTS are reported: a failure of one of the two solar paddles in May 2014, a switch to the secondary pointing system in January 2015, and most recently a cryocooler shutdown and restart in August 2015. The Level 1A (L1A) (raw interferogram) and the Level 1B (L1B) (radiance spectra) of version V201 described here have long-term uniform quality and provide consistent retrieval accuracy even after the satellite system anomalies. In addition, we discuss the unique observation abilities of GOSAT made possible by an agile pointing mechanism, which allows for optimization of global sampling patterns.

Abstract: An experimental investigation of the effects of two-dimensional roughness on hypersonic boundary layers was carried out at the JAXA 0.5 m hypersonic wind tunnel using a 5 deg half-angle sharp cone at a freestream Mach number of 7.1 and a wide range of stagnation conditions. Aerodynamic heating distributions and surface pressure fluctuations were measured with and without roughness elements applied to the cone. A wavy wall roughness with a wavelength of 2� located well upstream of the breakdown region had the effect of delaying transition. Surface pressure spectrum densities indicate that disturbances of the roughness wavelength are amplified compared to the smooth wall case. At a lower stagnation temperature, however, wavy wall roughness configurations had the same effect as regular roughness, and no discernible differences between wavy wall roughness and spherical roughness were observed, either in the transition point or in the pressure fluctuation spectrum.

Abstract: High-resolution X-ray spectroscopy with Hitomi was expected to resolve the origin of the faint unidentified $E\approx 3.5\,\mathrm{keV}$ emission line reported in several low-resolution studies of various massive systems, such as galaxies and clusters, including the Perseus cluster. We have analyzed the Hitomi first-light observation of the Perseus cluster. The emission line expected for Perseus based on the XMM-Newton signal from the large cluster sample under the dark matter decay scenario is too faint to be detectable in the Hitomi data. However, the previously reported 3.5 keV flux from Perseus was anomalously high compared to the sample-based prediction. We find no unidentified line at the reported high flux level. Taking into account the XMM measurement uncertainties for this region, the inconsistency with Hitomi is at a 99% significance for a broad dark matter line and at 99.7% for a narrow line from the gas. We do not find anomalously high fluxes of the nearby faint K line or the Ar satellite line that were proposed as explanations for the earlier 3.5 keV detections. We do find a hint of a broad excess near the energies of high-n transitions of S xvi ($E\simeq 3.44\,\mathrm{keV}$ rest-frame)—a possible signature of charge exchange in the molecular nebula and another proposed explanation for the unidentified line. While its energy is consistent with XMM pn detections, it is unlikely to explain the MOS signal. A confirmation of this interesting feature has to wait for a more sensitive observation with a future calorimeter experiment.
