14 Nov 2009TL;DR: A novel approach for estimating the execution time of workflows based on Local Learning, complemented by a dynamic weighing scheme that assigns weights to workflow attributes reflecting their impact on the workflow execution time.
Abstract: Workflow execution time prediction is widely seen as a key service to understand the performance behavior and support the optimization of Grid workflow applications. In this paper, we present a novel approach for estimating the execution time of workflows based on Local Learning. The workflows are characterized in terms of different attributes describing structural and runtime information about workflow activities, control and data flow dependencies, number of Grid sites, problem size, etc. Our local learning framework is complemented by a dynamic weighing scheme that assigns weights to workflow attributes reflecting their impact on the workflow execution time. Predictions are given through intervals bounded by the minimum and maximum predicted values, which are associated with a confidence value indicating the degree of confidence about the prediction accuracy. Evaluation results for three real world workflows on a real Grid are presented to demonstrate the prediction accuracy and overheads of the proposed method.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors provide a concise, yet comprehensive analysis of state-of-the-art wind site assessment techniques, including a detailed survey of their strengths and pitfalls, and overviews parameters such as survey time, coverage area, cost, and feasibility for each technique according to the site chosen for the assessment.
Abstract: A wind assessment process can make or break the economics of wind plant development. Lack of credible data is one of the major reasons for faulty predictions and inaccurate estimations of the energy production from wind farms. This paper provides a concise, yet comprehensive analysis of state-of-the-art wind site assessment techniques, including a detailed survey of their strengths and pitfalls. The analysis of each technique addresses issues that may affect the power production estimates to an undesirable degree. It also overviews parameters such as survey time, coverage area, cost, and feasibility for each technique according to the site chosen for the assessment. A case study at the end presents independent surveys carried out in the Kallarkahar region of Pakistan using the latest site assessment techniques. The collected data sets are examined in order to unearth discrepancies affecting the assessment process in the surveys.

TL;DR: An unsteady squeezing flow of Casson fluid having magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) effect and passing through porous medium channel is modeled and investigated in this paper, where similar transformations are used to convert the partial differential equations (PDEs) of non-Newtonian fluid to a highly nonlinear fourth-order ordinary differential equation (ODE).
Abstract: An unsteady squeezing flow of Casson fluid having magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) effect and passing through porous medium channel is modeled and investigated. Similarity transformations are used to convert the partial differential equations (PDEs) of non-Newtonian fluid to a highly nonlinear fourth-order ordinary differential equation (ODE). The obtained boundary value problem is solved analytically by Homotopy Perturbation Method (HPM) and numerically by explicit Runge-Kutta method of order 4. For validity purpose, we compare the analytical and numerical results which show excellent agreement. Furthermore, comprehensive graphical analysis has been made to investigate the effects of various fluid parameters on the velocity profile. Analysis shows that positive and negative squeeze number have opposite effect on the velocity profile. It is also observed that Casson parameter shows opposite effect on the velocity profile in case of positive and negative squeeze number . MHD parameter and permeability constant have similar effects on the velocity profile in case of positive and negative squeeze numbers. It is also seen that, in case of positive squeeze number, similar velocity profiles have been obtained for , and . Besides this, analysis of skin friction coefficient has also been presented. It is observed that squeeze number, MHD parameter, and permeability parameter have direct relationship while Casson parameter has inverse relationship with skin friction coefficient.

TL;DR: The design and implementation of robust nonlinear control approaches to obtain the desired trajectory tracking of a flexible joint manipulator driven with a direct-current (DC) geared motor and results obtained from MATLAB/Simulink and the experimental platform verify the performance of the proposed control algorithms.
Abstract: This article addresses the design and implementation of robust nonlinear control approaches to obtain the desired trajectory tracking of a flexible joint manipulator driven with a direct-current (DC) geared motor. The nonlinear control schemes have been designed and implemented such that they locally stabilize the closed loop system considering all the states as bounded. The system model has been derived using Euler-Lagrange approach. Two different approaches based on sliding mode control (SMC), i.e. the traditional SMC and integral SMC, have been considered in the present study. To experimentally validate the proposed control laws, an electrically-driven single-link flexible manipulator has been designed and fabricated. The designed control algorithms have been developed and experimentally validated on the custom-developed platform. The results obtained both from MATLAB/Simulink and the experimental platform verify the performance of the proposed control algorithms.
