TL;DR: Results show that when using the ventilated mattress the ammonia gas concentration in the room was significantly reduced compared to the concentration measured when the VM was not in operation, which shows that the exposure to body generated gaseous pollutants in hospital environment was reduced.
Abstract: to bioeffluents contaminants in hospitals DTU Orbit (10/01/2019) Advanced air distribution method combined with deodorant material for exposure reduction to bioeffluents contaminants in hospitals The separate and combined effect of a ventilated mattress and acid-treated activated carbon fibre (ACF) fabric on reducing the exposure to body generated gaseous pollutants in hospital environment was studied. Full-scale experiments were performed in a climate chamber furnished as a single-bed hospital patient room at reduced background ventilation rare of 1.6 air changes per hour. The bed of the patient was equipped with the ventilated mattress (VM) having an exhaust opening from which bioeffluents generated from human body were sucked and discharged from the room. To enhance the pollutant removal, acid-treated activated carbon fibre material was used in some of the experiments in the form of patient’s cover. The simulated pollution source was ammonia gas released from the patient’s groins. The results show that when using the ventilated mattress the ammonia gas concentration in the room was significantly reduced compared to the concentration measured when the VM was not in operation. The concentration of ammonia gas in the room was 100% removed when the VM operating at 1.5 L/s and the ACF material used as a cover were used together.

TL;DR: The resemblance of the communication functions of clothes and accessories to those appearing in animals are examined, and the requirements for safer working wears are suggested.
Abstract: Clothes and accessories function as communication signs. The functions of relevant phenomena appearing in our daily life are classified according to their meanings as communication signs. The makeup, body painting, artificial deformation, modification (for example, tattoo or cut) and such kinds of decoration on the bodies are included in accessories. While the clothes and accessories have other functions such as body temperature regulation, protection of the body, being the fortune value by themselves and so on, the functions as communication signs are focused on in this paper. The resemblance of the communication functions of clothes and accessories to those appearing in animals are examined, through which the origin of clothes and accessories is discussed. Among many kinds of communication signs, including vocal or behavioral ones, the communication signs of clothes and accessories are characterized by their appearance, and may be named 'morphological signs' more precisely. The classification is thought to be useful for investigating the social or communicational functions of clothes and accessories from the viewpoint of socio-behavioral science and ergology, because the communication in the work situation is very important. The requirements for safer working wears are suggested.

TL;DR: It is demonstrated that “illusory stripes” can produce the Helmholtz illusion by measuring the apparent size of a square patch filled with sinusoidal lines.
Abstract: This study examined the Helmholtz illusion by using "illusory stripes." A square patch is perceived as wider when vertical lines are drawn on it and is perceived as taller when horizontal lines are drawn on it, i.e., Helmholtz illusion. With vertical lines curved sinusoidally, horizontal "illusory stripes" are perceived; and with horizontal lines curved sinusoidally, vertical "illusory stripes" are perceived. The purpose of the present study was to test whether the "illusory stripes" produce the Helmholtz illusion. We measured the apparent size of a square patch filled with sinusoidal lines. Our subjects (N=27) judged the patch with horizontal "illusory stripes" taller than the square patch filled with vertical straight lines. The subjects also judged the square patch with vertical "illusory stripes" wider than the square patch filled with horizontal straight lines. These results demonstrate that "illusory stripes" can produce the Helmholtz illusion.
