Abstract: In this paper, we present a generalization of the Hessian matrix toC 1,1 functions, i.e., to functions whose gradient mapping is locally Lipschitz. This type of function arises quite naturally in nonlinear analysis and optimization. First the properties of the generalized Hessian matrix are investigated and then some calculus rules are given. In particular, a second-order Taylor expansion of aC 1,1 function is derived. This allows us to get second-order optimality conditions for nonlinearly constrained mathematical programming problems withC 1,1 data.

Abstract: The radiobiological properties of the heavy ions of cosmic radiation were investigated on Spacelab 1 by use of biostacks, monolayers of biological test organisms sandwiched between thin foils of different types of nuclear track detectors. Biostacks were exposed to cosmic radiation at several locations with different shielding environments in the module and on the pallet. Evaluations of the physical and biological components of the experiment to date indicate that in general they survived the spaceflight in good condition. Dosimetric data are presented for the different shielding environments.

Abstract: After a background on the use of triangular norms in multiple-valued logics, a systematic investigation of implication functions based on triangular norms is carried out; five families of implication functions are considered. Then Zadeh's generalized modus ponens is thoroughly reconsidered in the framework of possibility theory. It is pointed out that the choice of the implication function for representing the rule “if X is A, then Y is B” is completely determined by the choice of the conjunctive operation used for aggregating an a priori possibility distribution with a conditional possibility distribution. The chaining of conditional rules is proved to be transitive when we choose a continuous triangular norm as conjunctive operation. The generalized modus tollens, the treatment of truth-qualified rules and the processing of a collection of conditional rules providing an incomplete description of a causal link, are studied in detail. Abstract: Dielectric breakdown in solids defies simple classification, and no existing theory is capable of accounting for the totality of the observed phenomena. However, the physical nature of the processes involved may be inferred from the statistical nature of breakdown, from the essential role of charge carriers and defects, and from the discreteness of the resulting breakdown channel. Analysis shows that classical avalanche phenomena are unlikely to be the dominant mechanism because charge carriers in the virgin materials do not normally have sufficient energy to cause the required damage. A cumulative model is proposed, based on the proposition that a smaller amount of energy is required to extend a pre-existing defect than to create one in the first place. Successive stages of the ?conditioning? process of insulators by electric fields involve the creation of ?clusters? of defects, their subsequent growth in the direction of the field, and the eventual joining of these elongated defects into a discrete breakdown channel. Breakdown at short times and in thin samples which occurs in many materials at fields of the order of 1 GV/m may be understood in terms of massive electron tunnelling through the image-force-lowered barrier, leading to rapid destruction of the material.

Abstract: About 50–70% of the endo-PG inhibitor activity in hypocotyls of Early-wax and Processor beans is bound to the cell walls and the remainder is soluble in tissue homogenates. Higher amounts (23–40% of inhibitor were always recovered from the cell walls of resistant near isogenic lines than from the susceptible lines. All the soluble and the cell wall bound forms of the inhibitors in the near isogenic lines, had identical properties and they could not be separated by the procedures used. The inhibitors are glycoproteins, have an approximate molecular weight of 46 000 and do not appear to possess haemagglutinin properties. Inhibitor activity did not increase in host tissue following inoculation with Colletotrichum lindemuthianum race β and so the inhibitors are not part of an active defence mechanism. Degradation of isolated cell walls containing ionically bound proteins and inhibitors, by the highly purified endo-PG of Colletotrichum lindemuthianum , was greatly reduced compared to that of wall preparations without ionically bound proteins or inhibitors. Thus endo-PG inhibitors may function to reduce the activity of pathogen-produced endo-PGs in vivo .

Abstract: Formamide is highly suited for the production of perfluorinated microemulsions since: 1. —Perfluorinated surfactants are soluble in formamide 2. —Perfluorinated alcohols (good cosurfactants for perfluorinated oils due to their high solubility in these iols) are also slightly soluble in formamide but not in water. Such waterless perfluorinated microemulsions have quite similar structures to their aqueous counterparts since percolation and Winsor systems have been observed. We are now undertaking a study of these microemulsions as reaction media for oxidative reactions.

Abstract: The Alpine tectonics in the Pyrenean Range is controlled by motions of basement blocks (High Primary Range, North Pyrenean blocks). These blocks belong to different tectonic units; they are amygdaloid, wedge-shaped, squeezed at their roots, upthrust and displaced with their cover (detached or not) in a convergent shear zone between the European and Iberian plates. These basement blocks are distributed within isopic (isofacial) units with diachronous terrigenous prisms. The stratigraphical analysis of their Mesozoīc cover reveals their relative position during the Mid-Cretaceous continental break-up which induced the separation of the two previously joined plates.

Abstract: The equilibria of the complexes formed separately by calcium and magnesium with tetracycline, oxytetracycline, doxycycline and minocycline were studied in the previous parts of this series. Computer simulations run on this occasion showed that the stoichiometry of these species do actually condition the bioavailability of the antibiotics in blood plasma during treatment, the fraction of free base being quite negligible with regard to the metal-bound one. The present paper completes this study with the investigation of the mixed-metal complexes given rise to by calcium and magnesium with the same antibiotics. Such ternary species have been proved to exist for tetracycline, oxytetracycline, and minocycline. Their involvement in the plasma distribution of these drugs is discussed, in relation with the potential abilities of the four tetracyclines to diffuse from plasma into tissue membranes.

Abstract: Pleurodeles waltl , a typical long-tailed amphibian (Urodela) is proposed as a new animal for genetic toxicological studies. X-Rays and various clastogenic substances cause the formation of clearly visible micronuclei in the red blood cells (RBC). The proportion of cells with micronuclei was determined from blood smears of larvae after irradiation or after having been kept in water containing the substances to be studied. A dose-effect curve was established for X-irradiation. The 6 following substances were tested by this method: benzo[ a ]pyrene, carbaryl, N -nitrosocarbaryl, aziridine, caffeine and formaldehyde. Formaldehyde was the only substance tested that did not bring about formation of micronuclei in the RBCs. The results were compared with data already obtained by other methods of toxicology. This method should allow a cytogenetic test to be developed for the detection of clastogenic substances in aqueous media.

Les croisements evites, avec des etats correles a des configurations plus excitees, plus precisement 5s, 5p et 3d pour Ar*2, 6s, 6p et 4d pour Kr* 2 sont egalement pris en compte. L'analyse de la nature des OM Rydberg et des fonctions d'onde multiconfigurationnelles permet d'interpreter la structure du spectre electronique de ces deux excimeres et de comprendre le caractere des croisements evites entre etats Rydberg des gaz rares homonucleaires.
