TL;DR: In this paper, the authors examined the hypothesis that the psychological response to social change would vary as a function of both the acculturative pressures brought to bear on a community, and the traditional cultural and behavioural features that characterize the community.
Abstract: Examined is the hypothesis that the psychological response to social change would vary as a function of both the acculturative pressures brought to bear on a community, and the traditional cultural and behavioural features that characterize the community. By sampling from communities of Amerindian peoples, across an eco-cultural range, evidence was presented which indicated that the greater the cultural discontinuities across cultures, then the greater the acculturative stress; within Amerindian communities, levels of psychological differentiation were negatively related to acculturative stress. Specific cultural and individual differences must be taken into account when attempting to understand relationships between culture contact and acculturative stress; its course is not universal.

TL;DR: In this article, it is shown that string stability can be achieved only by using both forward and rearward intervehicle separation measurements, which can be obtained by using a moving-cell position reference for each vehicle.
Abstract: An important performance criterion for moving vehicle longitudinal control systems is string stability in the face of perturbations in the motion of individual vehicles. Systems employing a moving-cell reference for each vehicle always exhibit string stability since there is no vehicle interaction within the string. This correspondence investigates the string stability for a class of relative-motion systems where a moving-cell position reference is not available. It is shown that string stability can be achieved only by using both forward and rearward intervehicle separation measurements.

TL;DR: It is concluded that the bladder neck contains mainly α‐receptors and the detrusor mainly β‐receptor but both regions possess both types of adrenoceptor.
Abstract: 1 The distribution of α- and β-adrenoceptors in isolated preparations of human bladder neck and detrusor muscle has been studied. 2 Adrenaline caused contraction of the bladder neck which was blocked by phenoxybenzamine but unaltered by propranolol. 3 Isoprenaline caused relaxation of the bladder neck which was blocked by propranolol. High concentrations caused contraction which was enhanced by propranolol but blocked by phenoxybenzamine. 4 Detrusor muscle was relaxed by isoprenaline and this effect was blocked by propranolol. Phenylephrine caused relaxation of detrusor which was unaffected by phenoxybenzamine; in some cases contraction was produced in the presence of propranolol. 5 It is concluded that the bladder neck contains mainly α-receptors and the detrusor mainly β-receptors but both regions posses both types of adrenoceptor.

TL;DR: Les cultures politiques regionales au Canada as discussed by the authors explore des dimensions peu connues de the phenomene of regionalism in Canada, including the participation, efficiency, and confiance politiques.

TL;DR: An optimization algorithm is developed to minimize the p-error criterion under the constraint that the resulting filter be stable, and several examples are solved to illustrate the technique.
Abstract: In this paper a design technique for the two-dimensional filters is proposed. An optimization algorithm is developed to minimize the p-error criterion under the constraint that the resulting filter be stable. Design of one-dimensional filter may be considered as a special case to which the proposed algorithm is applicable. Several examples are solved to illustrate the technique.

TL;DR: It is shown that both AN and NG produce significant decreases in LVEDV and LVESV which may contribute to their beneficial effects in myocardial ischemia.
Abstract: The therapeutic effect of nitrites in myocardial ischemia is considered to be due in part to a reduction of left ventricular volume but measurement of this parameter in man has been difficult. The technique of echocardiography was used to measure changes in left ventricular end-diastolic volume (LVEDV) and end-systolic volume (LVESV) after administration of amyl nitrite (AN) and nitroglycerin (NG) in 20 normal subjects. Control LVEDV was 131 ± 8 ml (mean ±sem) and LVESV 30 ± 2 ml. After AN, LVEDV fell 18 ± 2% (P < 0.001) and LVESV by 57 ± 3% (P < 0.001) in 15 sec to 1 min. Heart rate (HR) rose from 68 ± 3 to 108 ± 4 beats/min at 1 min and blood pressure (BP) fell from 119/69 ± 3/2 to 99/47 ± 4/3 mm Hg. Following NG, LVEDV fell 11 ± 2% (P < 0.001) and LVESV 21 ± 3% (P < 0.001) within 2-5 min. HR rose from 65 ± 2 to 72 ± 3 beats/min and BP fell from 111/67 ± 3/2 to 102/70 ± 5/2 mm Hg at 3 min. Cardiac output increased from 6.9 ± 0.3 to 11 ± 0.9 L/min 30 sec after AN while no significant change occurred with...

TL;DR: In this paper, it was shown that the absorption currents in polymers (mainly polyethylene terephthalate) are consistent with the Walden model of injection, followed by build up of trapped space charge.
Abstract: It is shown that published experimental data on absorption currents in polymers (mainly polyethylene terephthalate) are consistent with the Walden model of injection, followed by build up of trapped space charge. The published results do not agree with the tunnelling process, dipolar relaxation or electrode polarisation. Detailed analysis indicates that the injection efficiency rises sharply with field, and that the observed current-time plots arise from the change in field at the injecting electrode, rather than from a modification of the barrier shape. It follows that the knee in the current-time plot does not reflect a transit time, but is a measure of t0, a complex function of field and injection mechanism. It also follows that the steady-state currents are controlled by the transport mechanism in the bulk.

TL;DR: Tests of platelet function demonstrated normal adhesiveness to collagen, normal prothrombin consumption, and enhanced platelet factor 3 activity, and aggregation by ADP, adrenaline and collagen was similar to that of normal platelets at the same low concentration.
Abstract: Summary. Studies have been performed on six members of one family with May-Hegglin anomaly (MH) five of whom manifested a mild bleeding tendency. All were thrombocytopenic (25000–1420007/μl). Platelet kinetic studies (51Cr) showed normal survival (two autologous, one MH to normal, one normal to MH). Mean platelet volume was increased; content (per platelet) of cholesterol, phospholipid, and tyrosine was elevated 3- to 6-fold. Total body platelet mass calculated from these parameters was normal. Tests of platelet function demonstrated normal adhesiveness to collagen, normal prothrombin consumption, and enhanced platelet factor 3 activity. Bleeding time was prolonged (5/5), platelet retention by glass beads was diminished (3/3), clot retraction was poor (5/5), and aggregation by ADP, adrenaline and collagen was similar to that of normal platelets at the same low concentration. It is considered that the bleeding tendency probably reflects thrombocytopenia per se as do those tests of platelet function that are impaired. Review of the published cases supports this contention. Normal platelet survival, normal total circulating platelet mass, and intrinsically normal platelet function suggest that the giant platelets and the thrombocytopenia result from impaired and disorderly megakaryocyte fragmentation.

TL;DR: In this article, a model which examined interrelationships among ecological setting, cultural adaptation and psychological differentiation was proposed, and behavioural predictions were made, which led to the conclusion that higher levels of differentiation in perceptual, social and affective domains do indeed characterize hunters and gatherers.
Abstract: A model which examined interrelationships among ecological setting, cultural adaptation and psychological differentiation was proposed. Details of each element of the model were discussed, and behavioural predictions were made. Specifically, hunters and gatherers, who were migratory and low in population density and food accumulation were expected to exhibit high levels of psychological differentiation in perceptual, social and affective areas of psychological differentiation. Conversely, sedentary peoples who were higher in population density and food accumulation were expected to exhibit lower levels of differentiation, while those peoples who were ecologically intermediate were expected to exhibit moderate levels. Sampling in Amerindian communities, and comparing these new data to previous African, Australian, and Eskimo data, led to the conclusion that higher levels of differentiation in perceptual, social and affective domains do indeed characterize hunters and gatherers. However, such diffe...

TL;DR: The spontaneous release of acetylcholine from the cerebral cortex of control and morphine‐dependent rats was investigated and the relevance of these results with regard to development of the narcotic abstinence syndrome is discussed.
Abstract: 1 The spontaneous release of acetylcholine (ACh) from the cerebral cortex of control and morphine-dependent rats was investigated. The rate of resting output of ACh in morphine-dependent animals was lower than that in the control animals.2 Administration of naloxone and nalorphine to morphine-dependent rats was followed by a significant rise in the release of cortical ACh. In control rats no such increase in the release of ACh occurred after similar injections of narcotic antagonists.3 Injections of morphine produced a consistent decrease in the rate of spontaneous release of cortical ACh in the control rats, but similar injections in the dependent rats did not produce a decrease in the rate of cortical ACh release.4 The relevance of these results with regard to development of the narcotic abstinence syndrome is discussed.

TL;DR: In this paper, it has been shown that in a turbulent shear flow, the reference pressure is best taken to be the static pressure at the shear-layer edge, where the probe is small compared with the turbulence scale.
Abstract: The response of a Pitot probe in a uniform laminar stream is commonly expressed in the form \[ P_s = P+{\textstyle\frac{1}{2}}C_{\rho} U^2, \] where Ps is the probe signal pressure, P is the stream static pressure, U is the stream speed and ρ is the fluid density. It has been found that for ordinary sphere-nosed, round-nosed and square-nosed probes \[ 1-C = K(\sin^2\theta)^m = K(U^2_n/U^2)^m, \] where θ is the angle between the velocity vector and the probe axis, and Un ≡ U sin θ is the transverse velocity component. The parameters m and K are functions of the probe geometry. These formulae also describe the performance in a turbulent stream when the probe is small compared with the turbulence scale. The evaluation of the time-averaged response is treated, and an answer is developed to the question of what it is that a Pitot probe measures in a turbulent stream. In a turbulent shear flow having the properties of a boundary layer, the reference pressure is best taken to be the static pressure at the shear-layer edge. It is shown that round-nosed probes with Di/D≃0·45 and square-nosed probes with Di/D≃0·15 then detect with good accuracy, where Di/D is the ratio of the inside and outside diameters of the Pitot tube. When measurements are made with two probes of dissimilar geometry, the differential response can be used to find the mean-square level of the transverse velocity fluctuations. Turbulence levels so measured agree closely with results from hot-wire anemometry.

TL;DR: In this paper, the familiar hyperbola model is used to describe data which appear to follow two different straight line relationships on opposite sides of an undetermined join point, and the two models are fitted to two sets of experimental data for purposes of comparison.
Abstract: In a recent paper [1] a general form of transition model was suggested to describe data which appear to follow two different straight line relationships on opposite sides of an undetermined join point. An alternative model is now considered, the familiar hyperbola, parameterized in a geometrically meaningful form. The two models are fitted to two sets of experimental data for purposes of comparison. In one of the examples account is taken of autocorrelated errors using a procedure suggested by Sredni [13].

TL;DR: Radiometric ages for lava flows of northern Chile indicate that a regional Oligocene erosion surface was faulted when the Cordillera de la Costa was uplifted at the end of the Paleogene as discussed by the authors.
Abstract: Radiometric ages for lava flows of northern Chile indicate that a regional Oligocene erosion surface was faulted when the Cordillera de la Costa was uplifted at the end of the Paleogene. Uplift of the coastal mountains caused the longitudinal depression to infil with sediment until aggradation virtually ceased in the Middle Miocene.
