TL;DR: Departure antipsychotic medication may be a useful prophylactic treatment for certain patients with bipolar affective disorder.
Abstract: BACKGROUND The efficacy of depot antipsychotic drugs in the prophylaxis of bipolar affective disorder was investigated. METHOD Life charts were constructed for 18 outpatients with bipolar disorder receiving prophylactic treatment with depot medication. The durations of affective episodes were compared during periods on or off medication. RESULTS The subjects suffered fewer relapses and spent significantly less time in hospital (P = 0.001) for treatment of manic, depressive and mixed affective illness during treatment with depot antipsychotics. CONCLUSIONS Depot antipsychotic medication may be a useful prophylactic treatment for certain patients with bipolar affective disorder.

TL;DR: Undetected micrometastases represent the single most important cause of treatment failure in patients undergoing putatively curative resection for colorectal cancer because current staging techniques are unable to identify patients with minimal residual disease.
Abstract: Background Undetected micrometastases represent the single most important cause of treatment failure in patient; undergoing putatively curative resection for colorectal cancer because current staging techniques are unable to identify patients with minimal residual disease. Methods A highly sensitive reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction technique has been used to amplify tissue-specific messenger RNA from lymph nodes classified as tumour-free using both conventional histopathology and immunohistochemistry. Results Four of 15 patients were restaged after genetic diagnosis of lymph node micrometastases, while in a further two additional positive nodes were detected. Conclusion Sensitive genetic techniques that detect minimal residual disease merit further study. particularly as there is evidence that patients may benefit from adjuvant chemotherapy.

TL;DR: The findings in a new group of patients corroborate those of a previous study on the clinical findings of 100 patients who had mandibular third molars removed because of distal cervical caries in theMandibular second molar.
Abstract: In 2005 we reported the clinical findings of 100 patients who had mandibular third molars removed because of distal cervical caries in the mandibular second molar. The aim of this follow-up study was to find out whether the findings in a new group of patients corroborate those of our previous study. We report on the clinical features of 239 patients (mean (SD) age 32.1 (7.85) years, range 20-65) who had 288 mandibular third molars removed because of distal cervical caries in the second molar. Patients had better dental health than average, and 67% had a DMF (decayed, missing, or filled) score of 5 or less. In 89% of third molars the mesial angulation was between 40° and 80°. Distal cervical caries in second molars is a late complication of third molar retention. The prophylactic removal of a partially erupted mesioangular third molar will prevent distal cervical caries forming in the second molar tooth.
