TL;DR: In this article, the authors analyze current freight practices in both road and rail freight transportation modes along a 1504 km-long stretch of the dedicated Western Freight Corridor (WFC).
Abstract: The study analyses current freight practices in both road and rail freight transportation modes along a 1504 km-long stretch of the dedicated Western Freight Corridor (WFC). We follow the views of several experts as regards the tools appropriate to cut long-distance road haulage; several interview surveys were also conducted with both road and rail carriers. We compare average generalized costs in each mode of freight transportation, and try to assess their influence on the choices made by transporters. Current rail freight transport challenges are identified and measures intended to support a shift towards green fuels are suggested. A prospective modal shift is articulated through the use of a ‘stated preference’ approach. Lastly, we recommend some strategies to encourage rail freight transportation.

TL;DR: The authors discusses the issues faced by these heritage resources and offers recommendations for enhancing community engagement, initiating co-management and developing common goals amongst contemporary communities so as to effectively safeguard this built heritage of dwindling minorities.
Abstract: The accelerated growth of Calcutta as a trading center under the British between the mid-18th and early 20th centuries brought an influx of diverse trading communities, including Armenians, Baghdadi Jews, Parsis, and Chinese, who settled in the historic bazaar nucleus of the city known today as Central Calcutta. These ethnoreligious communities erected significant heritage buildings reflecting their cultures. But with large-scale emigration and a rapidly dwindling local population, this shared built heritage is in neglect and has little or no relevance for Central Calcutta’s contemporary communities. This paper discusses the issues faced by these heritage resources and offers recommendations for enhancing community engagement, initiating co-management and developing common goals amongst contemporary communities so as to effectively safeguard this built heritage of dwindling minorities.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors analyzed the optimum level of service for passengers based on their behavior in a terminal building and identified Equivalent Passenger Units (EPUs) from passenger behavior and anthropometric studies.
Abstract: Indian Railways has one of the most extensive rail systems in the world which covers 68,000 km of rail track, 7318 stations with over 23 million passengers daily. This public transport system is one of the cheapest modes of travel for millions of Indians daily. With such an extensive system in place, railways need to maintain an efficient infrastructure system; it is expected passengers handling to reach 15.20 Billion by FY20, passenger traffic is noted to grow by 1.69 percent year on year. With such a kind of growth in patronage, it profoundly impacts the existing infrastructure. Thus, a constant upgrade is required in infrastructure. This research study focuses on NSG-1 (Non – Suburban Stations) taking New Delhi station as a case study. The research study is based on the level of service for access and dispersal facilities of the passengers. This paper will analyze the optimum level of service for passengers based on their behavior in a terminal building. This study identifies Equivalent Passenger Units (EPU’s) from passenger behavior and anthropometric studies. EPU’s further is used to evaluate the level of services for the passenger's mobility in the terminal building. Access and Dispersal facilities have been studied for the case study station, and influence zones are created for the same. The outcome of the study is the space assessment. The methodology can be used to identify the optimum level of services for different categories of the railway station. The space planning norms can be generated and then can be used by consultants for efficient planning of brownfield and greenfield stations at the optimum design service level.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors document the tendency of urban policies to reinforce and upgrade the status of existing cities, especially mega-cities of national and international importance, especially in India, where the applied planning policies often respond to urban transformation triggered by competitive market forces and socioeconomic demands of the city.
Abstract: Indian cities have been undergoing large-scale urban transformation, especially in the last 3 decades. The increased international flow of trade and capital and inter/intra-city mobility have accelerated the economic prosperity of the major Indian metropolises. The spatial impact has included: growing urban sprawl, heavy infrastructural development and diversifying of the social fabric. The Indian Government launched nation-wide Integrated Urban Development schemes like Smart City Mission, Make-in-India, AMRUT, HRIDAY, and others, to accelerate and complement the fast-paced urbanisation in the country, with success stories in many cities. In India, the Applied Planning Policies often respond to urban transformation triggered by competitive market forces and the socio-economic demands of the city. This chapter documents the tendency of urban policies to reinforce and upgrade the status of existing cities, especially mega-cities of national and international importance.
