TL;DR: In this article, a study has been attempted to analyze typical characteristics of houses in Krishna district of coastal Andhra Pradesh, where a few dwellings were selected which have vernacular building components and which underwent transformation (spatial, physical and esthetical) in response to the respective users' changing requirements in time and space.
Abstract: Dwellings are usually constructed by people as per their respective needs, with the use of traditional skills. The architectural built form, layout, building materials, and local construction practices vary from one region to the other, depending on the socio cultural and socio-economic significance. It is essential and crucial to understand the cultural significance in an ever-transforming world. Thus, a study has been attempted to analyze typical characteristics of houses in Krishna district of coastal Andhra Pradesh. As part of the study process, a few dwellings were selected which have vernacular building components and which underwent transformation (spatial, physical and esthetical) in response to the respective users’ changing requirements in time and space. People’s attachment to the vernacular components of the present and earlier house was recorded. The qualitative analysis brought out that 25% of houses exhibited transformation in their built-up area while 75% exhibited transformation in terms of its spaces, components such as roof, wall, joinery and ornamentation. It was also found that the quantum of transformation which had taken place arose from different reasons in isolation and combination such as family structure, change from joint large family to a smaller nuclear family system within the same premises, property subdivision, growth in economic condition, and partial physical deterioration of building components. The principal focus of this paper is to understand the degree of people’s attachment or satisfaction level toward vernacular elements and thereby understand the social acceptance of vernacular architecture in a broader perspective.

TL;DR: Jamaica's coastal tourism development has been criticised for its lack of good planning and its detrimental impact on the environment, and planners, environmentalists and journalists are among those who have expressed fears that the Jamaican tourist industry has failed to learn from the mistakes of the past as mentioned in this paper.
Abstract: Most of Jamaica's tourism development has occured on the north coast, more recently spreading to Negril at the western tip of the Island. Ribbon development, largely associated with tourism, has transformed much of this coastal strip, and proposals for a new resort at Whitehouse, Westmoreland, have raised concerns about thepossible extension of tourism blight to the relatively unspoiled south coast.Jamaica's coastal tourism development has been criticised for its lack of good planning and its detrimental impact on the environment, and planners, environmentalists and journalists are among those who have expressed fears that the Jamaican tourist industry has failed to learn from the mistakes of the past. This article draws largely on Jamaican newspaper reports of sometimes highly controversial tourism development schemes, and on the author's personal observationsand professional experience of planning and development in Jamaica since the late sixties.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors examined the barriers to the adoption of technology in learning and assessment of architectural courses in an architectural program approved by the Council of Architecture, India and identified and validated five barriers namely technological barriers, interaction barriers, evaluation constraints, time risks, and psychological barriers.
Abstract: The current study examines the barriers to the adoption of technology in learning and assessment of architectural courses in an architectural programme approved by the Council of Architecture, India. This research identifies and validates five barriers namely technological barriers, interaction barriers, evaluation constraints, time risks, and psychological barriers. Data was collected through a selfadministered and structured questionnaire targeting 311 students pursuing an undergraduate programme in reputable architecture schools of two popular private universities in north India. CFA (Confirmatory Factor Analysis) was applied to calculate validity and composite reliability. To examine the hypothesized relationships, path analysis was carried out using Structural Equation Modelling (SEM). The findings of the paper revealed that the time risk emerged as the strongest barrier followed by the interaction and technology risk respectively. In contrast, evaluation risk had the least influence on the intention to adopt online teaching and assessment and surprisingly, psychological risk had insignificant relationship. This research aims to understand hindrance factors in the adoption and assessment of online learning in the wake of COVID-19. It provides valuable insights for architecture schools to overcome these barriers and adopt online teaching learning effectively.

TL;DR: In this paper, the benefits of strong value engineering and use of alternative materials to enhance the efficiency of a project have been discussed and two case studies of different scale of housing projects are considered, it has been found out that on replacing a material with similar functions, helps reduce the cost of the project and add to the value of project.
Abstract: A major challenge for the Indian government is the rapid growth of the urban population, leading to housing shortages and poor urban living conditions. The current need-based housing shortage in the country is about 19 million units as per the 2011 census. The government has introduced many affordable housing schemes that focus on meeting the shortage of housing needs. Excess cost management needs to be planned from the initial stages of design during the building's project life. Value engineering is an effective problem-solving approach that minimizes prices while preserving and improving performance and quality requirements. Ve process's success lies in its ability to find ways to reduce redundant expenses while maintaining efficiency, reliability, performance, and other critical elements that reach or surpass the standards of the client. This study aims at understanding the application of value engineering in affordable housing to optimize cost, time and quality thus increasing overall value of the project. Two case studies of different scale of housing projects are considered, it has been found out that on replacing a material with similar functions, helps reduce the cost of the project and add to the value of the project. This research will provide an overview of benefits of strong value engineering and use of alternative materials to enhance the efficiency of a project.
