22 Feb 2020TL;DR: In this article, the authors highlight the allocation of population, density, workers and industrial space requirements for Greater Mumbai, Bengaluru city, and their satellite towns for creating planned and prospective future metropolitan scenarios.
Abstract: This chapter highlights the allocation of population, density, workers and industrial space requirements for Greater Mumbai, Bengaluru city, and their satellite towns for creating planned and prospective future metropolitan scenarios. To provide sustainable urban economy and ways of living, some inevitable recommendations are necessary, which include both basic (land and economic base) and supporting infrastructures (physical and social amenities). The provisions for strengthening the regional linkages and upgradation of physical and social infrastructures are felt necessary and accordingly suggested for planned and integrated development across the megacity regions are suggested.

25 Feb 2014TL;DR: In this article, the authors have analyzed residential sector of Bhopal City at ward level for demand side management through energy efficiency and lifestyle change, and emission reduction potential is quantified using the AIM/Enduse model up to year 2050.
Abstract: Indian cities are witnessing economic development, urbanization and lifestyle changes, leading to increase in Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions. In cities, sectors contributing to GHG emission are residential sector, transport and waste sector. In order to reduce emission, it is important to assess how individual city can contribute to emission reduction to become a Low Carbon Society (LCS). In this paper, we have analyzed residential sector of Bhopal City at ward level for demand side management through energy efficiency and lifestyle change. Two LCS, countermeasure scenarios CM1 and CM2 along with a Business as Usual scenario are developed and emission reduction potential is quantified using the AIM/Enduse model up to year 2050. The quantitative results are represented in spatial format using Geographical Information System (GIS) software providing a better understanding for decision makers.

01 Jan 2018TL;DR: In this article, the authors studied the growth and development of Delhi, the capital city of India, and outlined an approach to assess the biodiversity pattern of the metropolis and explained the corelation between habitat scales and levels of planning to arrive at a biodiversity profile of an urban area.
Abstract: Growth and development of an urban area modifies and creates biodiversity, which has a vital role in maintaining and improving the quality of the urban environment The paper studies the growth and development of Delhi, the capital city of India, and outlines an approach to assess the biodiversity pattern of the metropolis The co-relation between habitat scales and levels of planning to arrive at a biodiversity profile of an urban area, are explained The Global Biodiversity Assessment and Convention on Biological Diversity has brought forth the need to conserve biodiversity at global and local levels Because of their diminishing numbers, the role of species in urban areas has become critical So far, in cities, open spaces are supposed to mainly cater to aesthetic demands and recreation needs But if we examine the environmental role they play—pollution abatement, water recharge, indicator of pollution, climatic amelioration, flood control and so on—they are many The strategy for conservation is related to the scale of habitat, thus a multiscale strategy for conservation is explained in detail The legal, governance and policy tools in India relating to national, sub-national and local levels are put forth to give a holistic picture of the various aspects to be considered for mainstreaming biodiversity conservation in the urban planning process
