Abstract: A search is reported for massive resonances decaying into a quark and a vector boson (W or Z), or two vector bosons (WW, WZ, or ZZ). The analysis is performed on an inclusive sample of multijet events corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 inverse femtobarns, collected in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV with the CMS detector at the LHC. The search uses novel jet-substructure identification techniques that provide sensitivity to the presence of highly boosted vector bosons decaying into a pair of quarks. Exclusion limits are set at a confidence level of 95% on the production of: (i) excited quark resonances q* decaying to qW and qZ for masses less than 3.2 TeV and 2.9 TeV, respectively, (ii) a Randall-Sundrum graviton G[RS] decaying into WW for masses below 1.2 TeV, and (iii) a heavy partner of the W boson W' decaying into WZ for masses less than 1.7 TeV. For the first time mass limits are set on W' to WZ and G[RS] to WW in the all-jets final state. The mass limits on q* to qW, q* to qZ, W' to WZ, G[RS] to WW are the most stringent to date. A model with a "bulk" graviton G[Bulk] that decays into WW or ZZ bosons is also studied.

Abstract: We report the synthesis and electrochemical polymerization of a series of bisheterocycle-N-substituted carbazoles. These monomers exhibit low peak oxidation potentials (Ep,m) which range from 0.15 to 0.46 V vs Ag/Ag+, indicating facile polymerization. Repeated scan electrochemical polymerization for these monomers proceeds rapidly, relative to carbazole, to form stable electroactive films. Cyclic voltammetry of the polymers indicates that the films are well adhered to the electrode surface and that each of the polymers possess two distinct redox waves. At applied potentials greater than 1.15 V, a third irreversible oxidative process is observed, presumedly due to cross-linking. Optoelectrochemical analysis indicates that these polymers have an electronic bandgap (measured as the onset of the π-to-π* transition) between 2.4 and 2.5 eV. Abstract: Oscillations and waves of increased intracellular free calcium concentration ([Ca2+]i) are observed in a wide range of cell types. Because of their inherent nonlinear nature and the consequent unreliability of intuitive approaches, mathematical modeling has an important role to play in the study of these phenomena. One important class of oscillations and waves is dependent on the presence of inositol (1,4,5)-trisphosphate (IP3), which releases Ca2+ from internal stores via the IP3 receptor/Ca2+ channel. With the minimum possible mathematical formalism, we review mechanistic models for IP3-dependent Ca2+ oscillations and waves. These models are based on the regulation of the IP3 receptor by both IP3 and Ca2+, and incorporate experimental data on the steady-state and kinetic properties of the receptor. The extension of the models to describe intracellular and intercellular Ca2+ waves is considered.

Abstract: Dumpling squid, Euprymna tasmanica, show consistent individual differences in behaviour that can be classified according to indices reflecting shy‐bold, activity and reactivity responses. Using crosses of wild-caught single males to multiple females with known behavioural phenotypes, this study estimated patterns of additive genetic and residual variance in these behavioural traits from offspring of squid in two contexts, a threat (antipredator) and feeding (foraging) test. Genetic contributions to behavioural expression were dependent on test context. Behaviours in antipredator contexts had significant heritabilities (h 2 ¼ 0.2‐0.8) while behaviours from foraging contexts had lesser additive genetic and greater residual components (h 2 ¼ 0.05‐0.08). Personality trait variation in females was not related to her fecundity. Female boldness in foraging situations, which co-varied with body size, explained small but significant variation (� 21%) in brood hatching success, while successful fertilization was determined by positive assortion of mate pairs according to their shy‐bold phenotype. These results are discussed in terms of the ecological and evolutionary significance of animal ‘personality’ traits in wild populations of animals.
