Abstract: We present the discovery of a Neptune-mass planet OGLE-2007-BLG-368Lb with a planet-star mass ratio of q = [9.5 ± 2.1] × 10^(-5) via gravitational microlensing. The planetary deviation was detected in real-time thanks to the high cadence of the Microlensing Observations in Astrophysics survey, real-time light-curve monitoring and intensive follow-up observations. A Bayesian analysis returns the stellar mass and distance at M_l = 0.64^(+0.21)_(–0.26) M_☉ and D_l = 5.9^(+0.9)_(–1.4) kpc, respectively, so the mass and separation of the planet are M_p = 20^(+7)_(–8) M_⊕ and a = 3.3^(+1.4)_(–0.8) AU, respectively. This discovery adds another cold Neptune-mass planet to the planetary sample discovered by microlensing, which now comprises four cold Neptune/super-Earths, five gas giant planets, and another sub-Saturn mass planet whose nature is unclear. The discovery of these 10 cold exoplanets by the microlensing method implies that the mass ratio function of cold exoplanets scales as dN_(pl)/d log q ∝ q^(–0.7±0.2) with a 95% confidence level upper limit of n < –0.35 (where dN_(pl)/d log q ∝ q^n). As microlensing is most sensitive to planets beyond the snow-line, this implies that Neptune-mass planets are at least three times more common than Jupiters in this region at the 95% confidence level.

Abstract: A “covarion” model for nucleotide substitution that allows sites to turn “on” and “off” with time was proposed in 1970 by Fitch and Markowitz. It has been argued recently that evidence supports such models over later, alternative models that postulate a static distribution of rates across sites. However, in contrast with these latter well-studied models, little is known about the analytic properties of the former model. Here we analyze a covarion-style model and show (i) how to obtain the evolutionary distance between two species from the expected proportion of sites where two species differ, (ii) that the covarion model gives identical results to a suitably chosen rates-across-sites model if several sequences are compared in pairs by using only the expected proportion of sites at which they differ, (iii) conditions under which the two models will give identical results if the full joint probability matrix is examined, and (iv) that the two models can, in principle, be distinguished when there are at least four monophyletic groups of species. This last result is based on a distance measure that is tree additive under certain versions of the covarion model but, in general, will not be additive under a rates-across-sites model. The measure constructed does not require knowledge of the parameters of the model and so shows that sequences generated by the covarion model do in fact contain information about the underlying tree.

Abstract: Recent research on parasite evolution has highlighted the importance of host specialization in speciation, either through host-switching or cospeciation. Many parasites show common patterns of host specificity, with higher host specificity where host abundance is high and reliable, phylogenetically conservative host specificity, and formation of races on or in different host species. Recent advances in our understanding of host specificity and speciation patterns in a variety of animal parasites provides valuable insights into the evolutionary biology of mistletoes.

Abstract: The effects of global and local environmental changes are transmitted through networks of interacting organisms to shape the structure of communities and the dynamics of ecosystems. We tested the impact of elevated temperature on the top-down and bottom-up forces structuring experimental freshwater pond food webs in western Canada over 16 months. Experimental warming was crossed with treatments manipulating the presence of planktivorous fish and eutrophication through enhanced nutrient supply. We found that higher temperatures produced top-heavy food webs with lower biomass of benthic and pelagic producers, equivalent biomass of zooplankton, zoobenthos and pelagic bacteria, and more pelagic viruses. Eutrophication increased the biomass of all organisms studied, while fish had cascading positive effects on periphyton, phytoplankton and bacteria, and reduced biomass of invertebrates. Surprisingly, virus biomass was reduced in the presence of fish, suggesting the possibility for complex mechanisms of top-down control of the lytic cycle. Warming reduced the effects of eutrophication on periphyton, and magnified the already strong effects of fish on phytoplankton and bacteria. Warming, fish and nutrients all increased whole-system rates of net production despite their distinct impacts on the distribution of biomass between producers and consumers, plankton and benthos, and microbes and macrobes. Our results indicate that warming exerts a host of indirect effects on aquatic food webs mediated through shifts in the magnitudes of top-down and bottom-up forcing.

Abstract: The design of an air sonar device with a new form of binaural display is described which aids the blind in perceiving their environment. Some of the limitations of knowledge of human perception and the influence this has on a specification for the device are discussed. Inherent limitations in the binaural aid both in terms of technology development and performance are also explained. The paper described what is expected of the man-machine control system in a mobility setting and discusses the technique of evaluating a manmachinesystem so as to assess the machine performance.
