TL;DR: It is suggested that this triad should be looked for in all elderly patients with cervical spondylosis, as pressure of solid food on the osteophytes very probably induces pain and cricopharyngeal spasm.
Abstract: Spondylosis can lead to dysphagia in the elderly. In these patients pressure of solid food on the osteophytes very probably induces pain and cricopharyngeal spasm, and a transient sharp cut-off is seen in the barium column at fluoroscopy. Three cases are presented and it is suggested that this triad should be looked for in all elderly patients with cervical spondylosis.

TL;DR: Shea butter has been extracted from the seeds of the shea tree, B. parkii, with various organic solvents as discussed by the authors, such as Petroleum ether (40°-60°C), n-hexane, chloroform, and benzene.
Abstract: Shea butter has been extracted from the seeds of the shea tree,B. parkii, with various organic solvents. Petroleum ether (40°–60°C),n-hexane, chloroform, and benzene extracted 32%–38% of fat and 8–9 mg% of vitamin E. These solvents, particularly petroleum ether andn-hexane, can be used for the production of shea butter that is free from any oxidized fat and coloring impurities.

TL;DR: Lipid analysis showed that the fermented seeds contained more unsaturated fatty acids than the unfermented seeds, which is probably responsible for the characteristic flavor of foods seasoned with fermented castor oil seeds, known locally as ogiri.
Abstract: Castor oil seeds were fermented under conditions commonly used in some local communities in Eastern Nigeria. Levels of selected biochemical constituents of fermented seeds were compared with those of unfermented seeds. The free amino acids — phenylalanine, tryptophan, tyrosine, serine, glutamic acid, cysteine, and gluamine — were detected by using thin-layer chromatography in the fermented sample extract, while none were detectable in the extract of unfermented seeds. Lipid analysis showed that the fermented seeds contained more unsaturated fatty acids than the unfermented seeds. Glutamine produced by the microorganisms responsible for fermentation is probably responsible for the characteristic flavor of foods seasoned with fermented castor oil seeds, known locally as ogiri.

TL;DR: In this article, a Fourier transform perturbation method is developed and used to obtain uniformly valid asymptotic approximations of the solution of a class of one-dimensional second order wave equations with small non-linearities.
Abstract: A Fourier transform perturbation method is developed and used to obtain uniformly valid asymptotic approximations of the solution of a class of one-dimensional second order wave equations with small non-linearities. Multiple time scales are used and the initial-value problem on the infinite line is solved by Fourier transforming the wave equation and expanding the Fourier transform in powers of the small parameter. The non-linearity involves only the first partial derivatives of the dependent variable and the determination of the leading approximation is reduced to the solution of a pair of coupled non-linear ordinary differential equations in Fourier space. Examples are given involving a convolution non-linearity and a Van-der-Pol non-linearity.

Abstract: The environment of running water has provided the focus of human development activities from ancient times In Africa, as elsewhere, notable ancient civilizations were associated with the major river systems such as the Niger and the Nile This is probably related to the fact that river basins provided easy access to essential requirements of life viz: cheap and reliable source of water, food from both aquatic and terrestrial components, as well as cheap water transport system

TL;DR: It now appears established that GABA is an inhibitory neurotransmitter at the crustacean neuromuscular junction and that it probably also is the major inhibitor neurotransmitter in the vertebrate central nervous system.
Abstract: The presence of GABA in uniquely high concentrations in the vertebrate central nervous system was first reported in 1950 (Awapara, 1950; Roberts and Frankel, 1950; Udenfriend, 1950). Definitive evidence for an inhibitory function for GABA at synapses came several years later, originating from Florey’s observation of the inhibitory effects of crude brain extracts on the function of the crayfish stretch receptor system and the identification of GABA as the active substance (Bazemore et al.,1957; Florey, 1957). It now appears established that GABA is an inhibitory neurotransmitter at the crustacean neuromuscular junction and that it probably also is the major inhibitory neurotransmitter in the vertebrate central nervous system (Krnjevic, 1974; Davidson, 1976; Roberts et al.,1976). Although GABA has been considered primarily as a hyperpolarizing inhibitory neurotransmitter in the nervous system, recent evidence suggests a possible excitatory role (DeGroat, 1972; Bowery and Brown, 1974; Flock and Lam, 1974; Roskoski et al.,1974; Obata, 1976).

TL;DR: The simplicity of making burr holes recommends the method to more doctors, thereby extending the frontiers of treatment beyond the confines of neurosurgical centres.
Abstract: One hundred and thirty-two cases of surgically treated traumatic subacute and chronic subdural haematomas are reviewed. A high male to female ratio of 5 : 1 is noted. The age distribution and the clinical picture are comparable with the pattern in other reported studies. All patients were treated with simple burr holes and evacuation of blood without membranectomy, postoperative drainage or posturing. The results were excellent as 62 per cent made a good recovery, 33 per cent had mild disability, 4 per cent had severe disability and only 1 patient died. There were no recurrences. The simplicity of making burr holes recommends the method to more doctors, thereby extending the frontiers of treatment beyond the confines of neurosurgical centres.

Abstract: The aerobic bacteria associated with soft rot in onions (Allium cepa) were isolated and identified as a Vibrio sp., Micrococcus epidermidis, Pseudomonas cepacia, an Acinetobacter sp., a Xanthomonas sp., Bacillus polymyxa, and Bacillus megaterium. With the cup-plate assay method, no pectin hydrolase could be detected from any of these isolates when they were cultured in pectin medium, but lyase and pectinesterases were detectable. Onion tissue cultures showed pectin hydrolase activity for P. cepacia and B. polymyxa and lyase and pectinesterase activities for all of the isolates, usually at higher levels of activity than those of the pectin medium culture filtrates. In both culture media, Vibrio sp. showed the highest lyase and pectinesterase activities. In the viscometric test, all of the isolates achieved at least a 50% decrease in viscosity for lyase enzyme, with M. epidermidis and Vibrio sp. recording viscosity decreases as high as 83%. The ability to cause soft rot in onion bulbs was demonstrated by P. cepacia and Xanthomonas sp. Benzoic acid at a concentration of 0.8 mg/ml caused total suppression of enzyme production, whereas sodium benzoate at this concentration reduced pectinesterase production by 71% and lyase production by 72%. The possible use of these preservatives in the control of soft rot in onions is noted.

TL;DR: Considering the acute shortage of specialized manpower in the field of psychiatry in Nigeria, a suggestion is made for the establishment of community based psychiatric centres where, among other forms of therapy, ECT could be given in appropriate cases, on out‐patient basis.
Abstract: During the 12-month period, 1 January 1978 to 31 December 1978, 690 people received 4,194 electroconvulsive treatments at the Psychiatric Hospital, Enugu. The diagnostic classifications of patients receiving this form of treatment included severe psychotic depression (and masked depression), catatonic schizophrenia (with marked withdrawal, mutism, or excitement); mania which has become unresponsive to major tranquilizers, some selected cases of acute delirium and the collective group "puerperal psychosis". Bilateral ECT was generally used and the frequency of treatment was two ECT's per week. The method of anaesthesia used is described and mention is made of the few and mild complications which were encountered. ECT was found to have reduced the total duration of stay in hospital (for in-patients). Considering the acute shortage of specialized manpower in the field of psychiatry in Nigeria, a suggestion is made for the establishment of community based psychiatric centres where, among other forms of therapy, ECT could be given in appropriate cases, on out-patient basis. The wider use of this form of treatment in deserving cases in psychiatric hospitals is also recommended.
