Abstract: The object of this paper is to investigate the behavior of the magnetic field in a cosmological model for perfect fluid distribution. The magnetic field is due to an electric current produced along thex axis. It is assumed that expansion (θ) in the model is proportional toσ11, the eigenvalue of the shear tensorσij. The behavior of the model when the magnetic field tends to zero and other physical properties are also discussed.

Abstract: Serial sections of 350 nm thickness were used to make a correlation between electron and light microscopic observations. While thionin-acridine orange staining gave a positive result to detect abnormal sieve tubes of phyllody affected Phlox drummondii Hook, when observed under light microscope, the same cells revealed the presence of typical mycoplasmalike organisms (MLOs) in electron microscopic examination. Advantage of 350 nm thick sections in electron microscopy, and the utility of the technique in MLO detection have been discussed.

Korrelation zwischen licht- und elektronenmikroskopischen Beobachtungen und Identifizierung von mykoplasmaahnlichen Organismen in 350 nm dicken Schnittserien
350 nm dicke Serienschnitte wurden dazu verwendet, elektronen- und lichtmikroskopische Beobachtungen zueinander in Beziehung zu setzen. Durch Farbung mit Thionin-Acridin-Orange liesen sich unter dem Lichtmikroskop anomale Siebrohren von an der Verlaubungskrankheit erkrankten Pflanzen von Phlox drummondii Hook beobachten. Unter dem Elektronenmikroskop konnten in den gleichen Zellen typische mycoplasmaahnliche Organismen (MO) nachgewiesen werden. Der Vorteil von 350 nm dicken Schnitten in der Elektronenmikroskopie und die Brauchbarkeit der Methode zur Feststellung von MO werden diskutiert.

Abstract: Decomposition of two species of Salvina, S. molesta Mitchell and S. cucullata Roxb. was studied for 220 days by the litter bag method. Salvinia molesta decomposes faster in the initial stages and S. cucullata in the later stages of decomposition. The release of nutrients is rapid during the first seven days and is ascribed to leaching. The rate of release of nutrients differs in the two species, with higher rates for P, Ca and Mg in S. molesta and for N in S. cucullata.

Abstract: Results of experiments to determine the sensitivity of Channa punciatus to different levels of sodium chloride (NaCl) (1.2, 3.2 and 6.2g 1−1) are reported. It was found that C. punctatus which is otherwise considered a hardy fish is more sensitive to higher levels of sodium chloride stress. Thus 10% of the LC50 96 h value (1.2 g 1−1 NaCl) was found stressful as evidenced by loss in body weight, while 25 and 50% of the LC50 96 h value (3.2 and 6.2 g 1−1 NaCl) even resulted in mortality. Haematological and associated haematopoietic investigation confirmed stress symptoms in all the parameters tested. Thus microcytic hypochromic anemia together with leucopenia was indicated at the two higher sublethal levels, i.e., 25% and 50% of LC50 96 h value. Differential leucocyte count showed that leucopenia is mainly contributed by thrombocytic and neutrophilic decrease. Other cell types, viz., eosinophils, basophils, large and small lymphocytes, showed a relatively significant (P < 0.01) increase in number.
Haematopoietic studies revealed that the two penultimate stages in both RBC and neutrophil development closely follow the trend of their counterparts in the peripheral blood. However, the stem cells of both these cell types recorded significant increase under sodium chloride stress, which indicated homeostatic response. Biochemical studies revealed a depletion in blood glucose level as well as in liver and muscle glycogen reserves.

Abstract: The growth retardant effect of an extract of leaves of Delonix regia Raf. on Tribolium castaneum was determined by feeding first instar larvae and tracing their development up to the adult stage. The extract prolongs the development period of the treated insects and retards the growth. It also causes loss in body weight, reduction in larval size, poor development of larval skin and considerable larval and pupal mortality.

Abstract: Theoretical values of superconducting state parameters of a number of superconductors are presented here using linear potential with seven different forms of dielectric screening in order to exhibit the dielectric dependence of these parameters. Presently computed results on comparison with the available experimental data show that the R.P.A. screening provides the best explanation of the superconducting state in most of the metals. It has been observed that the use of a non-local pseudopotential is desirable in the case of complex metals like Al, Pb etc.

Abstract: In this paper an attempt has been made to describe the existence of guidance and counselling services in Indian educational institutions. Rapid growth of population has led to inverse expansion of educational institutions, i.e. disproportionate emphasis has been given to higher and technical education rather than primary education. Surprisingly, policy-makers have gradually given less importance to introduction of guidance and counselling, even though there is great concern for improving the entire educational system. This is a descriptive paper, although the author seeks the explanation for the ambivalent attitude to guidance and counselling in the social structure of India's complex society.
