TL;DR: In this paper, it is argued that an adequate characterization of what we know requires that we posit abstract mental structures to which we do not have conscious access and which are essentially conceptual and propositional, rather than sensory or pictorial, in nature.
Abstract: This paper presents a critique of contemporary research which uses the notion of a mental image as a theoretical construct to describe one form of memory representation. It is argued that an adequate characterization of ‘what we know’ requires that we posit abstract mental structures to which we do not have conscious access and which are essentially conceptual and propositional, rather than sensory or pictorial, in nature. Such representations are more accurately referred to as symbolic descriptions than as images in the usual sense. Implications of using an imagery vocabulary are examined, and it is argued that the picture metaphor underlying recent theoretical discussions is seriously misleading — especially as it suggests that the image is an entity to be perceived. The relative merits of several alternative modes of representation (propositions, data structures, and procedures) are discussed. The final section is a more speculative discussion of the nature of the representation which may be involved when people ‘use’ visual images.

TL;DR: A unified model of sub-sea-floor metamorphism and mass transfer is proposed in this paper, and possible differences between subsea floor and terrestial geothermal systems are discussed.
Abstract: The ophiolitic rocks of E. Liguria, Italy contain a „spilitic” metamorphic assemblage sequence, cross-cut by hydrothermal veins, which developed in the oceanic environment. Metamorphic parageneses indicate that temperatures as high as ∼400°C were realised at depths as shallow as 300 m below the original rock/water interface. The inferred temperature interval was equivalent to a geothermal gradient of ∼1300°C/km. It is suggested that metamorphism took place in a sub-sea-floor geothermal system, and that such systems are an integral part of the sea-floor spreading process. Modern evidence is provided to support this hypothesis, and to suggest that heavy metal rich solutions discharged from such systems are responsible for the formation of a metal enriched sedimentary component. A unified model of sub-sea-floor metamorphism and mass transfer is proposed, and possible differences between sub-sea-floor and terrestial geothermal systems are discussed. In the light of the model, the origins of certain aspects of bedded cherts found associated with ophiolitic rocks, of ophiolitic massive sulphide deposits and of certain trace element patterns are considered.

TL;DR: A review of the studies of Wisconsin-age deposits in the area of the three lobes indicates the emphasis that has been placed on investigations of tills by multiple methods, on paleontological studies of the interstadial and late-glacial deposits, and on radiocarbon dating as discussed by the authors.
Abstract: The names of the Huron, Erie, and Ontario Lobes imply that glaciers followed these lake depressions, but the flow patterns of these lobes were complex and changed several times during the Wisconsin glaciation. The sublobes of the southwestern part of the so-called Erie Lobe were more often an extension of the ice coming down Huron Basin, and ice from both basins participated in these sublobes. A review of the studies of Wisconsin-age deposits in the area of the three lobes indicates the emphasis that has been placed on investigations of tills by multiple methods, on paleontological studies of the interstadial and late-glacial deposits, and on radiocarbon dating. A threefold time-stratigraphic division of the Wisconsin Stage in this area is based upon synchronous fluctuations by several glacial lobes, and upon climatologic inferences from paleontologic studies. Early and late Wisconsin experienced maximum glacial advances; middle Wisconsin was dominated by interstadial retreats. The first Wisconsin glacial advance reached into the St. Lawrence Lowland only, and was followed by a glacial retreat during the St. Pierre Interstade about 65,000 radiocarbon yrs B. The second major glacial advance (by several lobes) went farther, but did not reach as far south as the late Wisconsin glaciation in Indiana and Ohio. In Pennsylvania and New York it was more extensive than the late Wisconsin, if the Olean Drift is indeed of early Wisconsin age. The source of ice was centered in the eastern Canadian Laurentide area. Mid-Wisconsin glacier margins retreated several times far into the Huron and Ontario Basins, or even north of them. Three main retreats were probably interrupted by two readvances which reached into the Erie Basin but not south of the Lake Erie watershed. Mid-Wisconsin time began more than 50,000 yrs B.P. and ended about 23,000 yrs B.P. During late Wisconsin time the major glacial advance in the western part of the region investigated reached its farthest extent south in at least three pulses: 21,000, 19,500, and 18,000 yrs ago. The oscillating retreats were interrupted by three documented readvances : about 17,000, 15,000, and 13,000 yrs B.P. The source of ice was primarily in the western Laurentide center. No evidence has been found here for the Valders readvance which took place in the Lake Michigan Lobe.

TL;DR: It is suggested that multicelluar spheroids provide a useful in vitro model for tumour therapy by reoxygenation, specific chemical sensitization, and autoradiography experiments.
Abstract: SummaryRadiation-resistant, hypoxic cells have been demonstrated in an in vitro tumour model by reoxygenation, specific chemical sensitization, and autoradiography experiments Enhanced cell-killing was found when spheroids were given two large fractions of radiation The development of central necrosis was also found to correlate with oxygen deprivation and was only slightly affected by deficiencies in other metabolites These results suggest that multicelluar spheroids provide a useful in vitro model for tumour therapy

TL;DR: In this article, the authors present a study which shows that among firms with a high degree of monopoly power, management-controlled firms report significantly lower profit rates than owner-controlled ones.
Abstract: After a survey of the empirical studies of Monsen, Chiu, and Cooley, of Kamerschen, and of Larner on the effects of the separation of ownership from control, this paper presents a study which shows that among firms with a high degree of monopoly power, management-controlled firms report significantly lower profit rates than owner-controlled firms. The works of Bain, Mann, and Shepherd and a 1967 FTC study supply information on barriers to entry, which more aptly capture the effect of separation of ownership and control. The findings confirm Hall and Weiss' conclusion that there is less variation in profit rates among large firms than among small ones.

TL;DR: It was concluded that the Radford nomogram calculation corrected only for intubation or an inflow of 70 ml/kg/min was a reliable guide for determining the inflow requirements to maintain mild hyperventilation.
Abstract: A study was carried out on a modification of the Mapleson D system to determine accurately the patient's inflow requirements during controlled ventilation. This study utilized the Radford Nomogram as a guide. It was concluded that the Radford nomogram calculation corrected only for intubation or an inflow of 70 ml/kg/min was a reliable guide for determining the inflow requirements to maintain mild hyperventilation. This system is dependent upon inflow only if the respirator minute ventilation exceeds the inflow.

TL;DR: It is concluded that the variations of acceleration of continuous and discontinuous movements appear locked into harmonics of the same frequency.
Abstract: A study was made of self-initiated and self-terminated elbow movements made by Cebus monkeys during performance of a self-paced step-tracking task. Movements were termed “continuous” if their acceleration traces crossed the zero line only once, and “discontinuous” if there was more than one zero crossing. Parameters of continuous and discontinuous movements were measured. Acceleration in continuous movements could oscillate at 7–8 Hz (“deviations”), and in discontinuous movements at 3–4 Hz (“steps”). Steps of discontinuous movements became smaller as movements approached their targets. Amplitudes of continuous movements and of steps were highly correlated to their durations, and fitted the same regression line. It is concluded that the variations of acceleration of continuous and discontinuous movements appear locked into harmonics of the same frequency. Their relationship to physiological tremor is discussed.

TL;DR: In this article, the melon-seed mechanism was used to predict the acceleration of four surges and the deceleration in the outward-moving material, after the maximum velocity has been reached, is stronger than if gravity alone is acting.
Abstract: Curves of velocity as a function of height have been determined from time sequences of on- and off-band Hα filtergrams of four surges. The surges behave as predicted by the melon-seed mechanism. However, in the outward-moving material the deceleration taking place after the maximum velocity has been reached, is stronger than if gravity alone is acting in three of four cases; during the return phase, the acceleration toward the solar surface is less than free-fall in two of three cases. The braking force, opposing the motion, is proportional to the velocity of the surge material. Non-force-free effects in the magnetic field supporting the surge provide a reasonable explanation for the braking.
