Abstract: The STAR Collaboration at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider reports measurements of azimuthal correlations of high transverse momentum (p(T)) charged hadrons in Au+Au collisions at higher p(T) than reported previously. As p(T) is increased, a narrow, back-to-back peak emerges above the decreasing background, providing a clear dijet signal for all collision centralities studied. Using these correlations, we perform a systematic study of dijet production and suppression in nuclear collisions, providing new constraints on the mechanisms underlying partonic energy loss in dense matter.

Abstract: Herein, we present the first examples of solvent-assisted linker exchange (SALE) in zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs). By exposing the ZIF CdIF-4 to excess solutions of 2-nitroimidazole and 2-methylimidazole under solvothermal conditions, we were able to obtain a previously reported ZIF CdIF-9 in high yield, as well as synthesize a new ZIF, Solvent-Assisted Linker-Exchanged Material-1 (SALEM-1). The parent and daughter ZIFs are isostructural (RHO zeolitic topology) and highly porous. Despite the high thermal and chemical stability of ZIFs, single crystal-to-single crystal linker exchange appears to be a suitable tool for the modification and functionalization of these materials. We anticipate that the addition of SALE to the arsenal of known synthetic techniques for ZIFs will significantly facilitate the quest to obtain interesting and useful ZIF compounds, including compounds that cannot be synthesized directly.

Abstract: Measurements of two-particle correlations on angular difference variables η1 − η2 (pseudorapidity) and φ1 − φ2 (azimuth) are presented for all primary charged hadrons with transverse momentum 0.15 ≤ p_t ≤ 2 GeV/c and |η| ≤ 1.3 from Au-Au collisions at √s_(NN) = 130 GeV. Large-amplitude correlations are observed over a broad range in relative angles where distinct structures appear on the same-side and away-side (i.e., relative azimuth less than π/2 or greater than π/2). The principal correlation structures include that associated with elliptic flow plus a strong, same-side peak. It is hypothesized that the latter results from correlated hadrons associated with semi-hard parton scattering in the early stage of the heavy-ion collision which produces a jet-like correlation peak at small relative angles. The width of the jet-like peak on η1 − η2 increases by a factor 2.3 from peripheral to central collisions, suggesting strong coupling of semi-hard scattered partons to a longitudinally-expanding medium. The new methods of jet analysis introduced here provide access to scattered partons at low transverse momentum well below the kinematic range where perturbative quantum chromodynamics and standard fragmentation models are applicable.

Abstract: The production of mesons containing strange quarks ($\Kzs$, $\phi$) and both singly and doubly strange baryons ($\rmLambda$, $\rmAlambda$, and $\Xis$) are measured at central rapidity in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 0.9 $\tev$ with the ALICE experiment at the LHC. The results are obtained from the analysis of about 250 k minimum bias events recorded in 2009. Measurements of yields (dN/dy) and transverse momentum spectra at central rapidities for inelastic pp collisions are presented. For mesons, we report yields ($ $) of $0.184 \pm 0.002 \stat \pm 0.006 \syst$ for $\Kzs$ and $0.021 \pm 0.004 \stat \pm 0.003 \syst$ for $\phi$. For baryons, we find $ = 0.048 \pm 0.001 \stat \pm 0.004 \syst$ for $\rmLambda$, $0.047 \pm 0.002 \stat \pm 0.005 \syst$ for $\rmAlambda$ and $0.0101 \pm 0.0020 \stat \pm 0.0009 \syst$ for $\Xis$. The results are also compared with predictions for identified particle spectra from QCD-inspired models and provide a baseline for comparisons with both future pp measurements at higher energies and heavy-ion collisions.
