Abstract: The integrity of RNA molecules is of paramount importance for experiments that try to reflect the snapshot of gene expression at the moment of RNA extraction. Until recently, there has been no reliable standard for estimating the integrity of RNA samples and the ratio of 28S:18S ribosomal RNA, the common measure for this purpose, has been shown to be inconsistent. The advent of microcapillary electrophoretic RNA separation provides the basis for an automated high-throughput approach, in order to estimate the integrity of RNA samples in an unambiguous way. A method is introduced that automatically selects features from signal measurements and constructs regression models based on a Bayesian learning technique. Feature spaces of different dimensionality are compared in the Bayesian framework, which allows selecting a final feature combination corresponding to models with high posterior probability. This approach is applied to a large collection of electrophoretic RNA measurements recorded with an Agilent 2100 bioanalyzer to extract an algorithm that describes RNA integrity. The resulting algorithm is a user-independent, automated and reliable procedure for standardization of RNA quality control that allows the calculation of an RNA integrity number (RIN). Our results show the importance of taking characteristics of several regions of the recorded electropherogram into account in order to get a robust and reliable prediction of RNA integrity, especially if compared to traditional methods.

Abstract: Zusammenfassung. Um den Zusammenhang zwischen Lese-Rechtschreibschwierigkeiten und emotionalen sowie Verhaltensproblemen zu klaren, wurde eine Langsschnittstudie vom Kindergarten bis zum Ende der vierten Grundschulklasse durchgefuhrt (n = 219). In jahrlichem Abstand wurde der Leistungsstand im Lesen und Rechtschreiben erfasst und eine Befragung zum Sozialverhalten durchgefuhrt. Zudem wurden Verhaltenseinschatzungen seitens der Kindergartnerin, Lehrerin, Eltern und Mitschuler erhoben. Kinder mit Verhaltensschwierigkeiten zeigten bereits im Kindergarten haufiger auffalliges Verhalten, Kinder mit LRS-Schwierigkeiten in der Schule waren durch Defizite in den Vorlauferfertigkeiten gekennzeichnet. Von Anfang an bestand ein masiger Zusammenhang zwischen den Bereichen, der etwa in gleicher Grose uber die Jahre erhalten blieb. Abstract: A packaging is composed of two foils joined along their edges that enclose at least one chamber containing a carrier provided, or to be provided, with a medium. A first foil has extending in it a predetermined break line for exposing the carrier, over which the carrier extends. Disposed between the second foil and the carrier is a largely rigid insert that extends beyond the predetermined break line situated opposite from it, at least far enough so that when the packaging is broken open, the carrier is pulled out of the chamber by a corresponding distance for removal or application of the medium. The insert acts as an “expelling sheet” between the carrier and covering foil and is dimensioned to either extend in its end contour beyond the predetermined break line or, upon bending at a weakening, portions of the insert extend beyond the predetermined break line.

Abstract: Distributed resource allocation is a promising field for the application of multi-agent systems also in technical or industrial environments. The design of the multi-agent system then mainly comprises the definition of the agents' local knowledge and behavior as well as the definition of an interaction protocol for overall coordination. Most solutions of agent-based resource allocation however exist in static or discrete-event systems while the allocation of resources to continuous dynamic systems is hardly addressed. In order to derive the local and the interaction behavior of the agents, we refer to a mathematical formulation of the resource allocation problem as an optimization problem. Abstract: Zusammenfassung. Die vorliegende Untersuchung geht dem Entwicklungsverlauf von Teilleistungsschwierigkeiten beim Lesen und Schreiben nach. In einer landlichen Region in Niederosterreich wurden 600 unterschiedlich leistungsfahige Schuler von der ersten bis zum Ende der vierten Klassenstufe in mehreren Kohorten in ihren Lese- und Rechtschreibkompetenzen untersucht. Es wird gepruft, ob sich die verschiedenen Teilfertigkeiten im Verlauf des Schulbesuches auseinander entwickeln oder aber angleichen. Ferner wird der Leistungsverlauf von anfanglich schwachen und leistungsstarkeren Schulern untersucht. Dabei werden die Teilbereiche Lesesicherheit, Lesegeschwindigkeit, Rekodieren, Rechtschreibfahigkeit und unterschiedliche Fehlerarten beim Rechtschreiben sowie die Gesamtleistung betrachtet. Im Ergebnis zeigt sich, dass es wahrend der ersten Schuljahre zu einer Annaherung von schwacheren und besseren Lesern kommt. Abstract: Zusammenfassung. In Lehr- und Lernumgebungen konnen Informationen sowohl mit Hilfe von Lesetext als auch mit Hilfe von Hortext vermittelt werden. Nach wie vor ist jedoch unklar, inwieweit sich Hor- und Leseverstehensprozesse voneinander unterscheiden. In der vorliegenden Arbeit wurde die Verarbeitung von visuell-raumlicher Information aus Hor- und Lesetexten anhand von zwei Studien untersucht. In Studie 1 wurde insbesondere auf die Rolle des Arbeitsgedachtnisses eingegangen. Es konnte gezeigt werden, dass das Horen dem Lesen beim Erinnern von kurzen und semantisch wenig komplexen Textabschnitten mit visuell-raumlichen Inhalten uberlegen ist. Es wird angenommen, dass die kognitive Verarbeitung visuell-raumlicher Inhalte und der Prozess des Lesens auf Grund gemeinsam genutzter Ressourcen im Arbeitsgedachtnis interferieren. Bei Verwendung von zwei Planarmotoren kann das mit diesen wirkverbundene Aufnahmeelement zusatzlich fur den dritten Freiheitsgrad um die Z-Achse gedreht werden.

Abstract: Visual Analytics is the science of analytical reasoning supported by interactive visual interfaces. People use visual analytics tools and techniques to synthesize information; derive insight from massive, dynamic, and often conflicting data; detect the expected and discover the unexpected; provide timely, defensible, and understandable assessments; and communicate assessments effectively for action. The issues stimulating this body of research provide a grand challenge in science: turning information overload into the opportunity of the decade. Visual analytics requires interdisciplinary science beyond traditional scientific and information visualization to include statistics, data mining, knowledge and discovery technologies, cognitive science and humancomputer interaction, production and presentation, and more. This makes it possible to create a packaging for two or a plurality of constituents that can be mixed together and applied in a simple manner in a metered administration. In a preferred embodiment of the invention the two constituents (or a plurality of constituents) are accommodated jointly in a single flexible (tubular or bag-like) packaging, which also serves as a mixing chamber, whereas the applicator only fulfills its function as an application aid.
