TL;DR: In this paper, the authors develop partnership research in three ways by considering the ways in which pedagogic partnership may support students to encounter emotions and empower them to develop resilience, leading to positive wellbeing.
Abstract: Despite emotion being recognised as fundamental to learning, the affective aspects of learning have often been side-lined in higher education. In the context of rising student wellbeing challenges, exploring ways of supporting students and their emotions in learning is increasingly significant. Pedagogic partnerships have the potential to help students to recognise and work with their emotions in their learning in a positive manner. As such, pedagogic partnerships offer opportunities to promote resilience and enhance student wellbeing. In this paper, we develop partnership research in three ways by: 1) considering the ways in which pedagogic partnership may support students to encounter emotions and empower them to develop resilience, leading to positive wellbeing; 2) exploring how this process might be achieved in the disciplinary context of geography; and 3) developing an evidence-based model to summarise the potential effect of pedagogic partnership in enhancing student wellbeing. We draw upon two case studies of student-faculty and student-student pedagogic partnership within geography curricula in order to evidence that emotional awareness in learning comes through the joys and struggles of working in partnership. We argue that pedagogic partnership may be developed to support the wellbeing of modern-day higher education communities.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article, a learning by feeling approach is presented as a new way of teaching emotional geographies, where excursions into the affective landscape help students explore emotional geography through more creative, reflective, affective, and active learning assessment strategies.
Abstract: Learning by doing has become a common phrase in the scholarship of teaching and learning as research continues to emphasize the benefits of active student engagement in higher education. Instead of passive vessels to be filled with information, students become the architects of their own education. While traditional ways of teaching focus on what students should learn, there is now more interest in how they should learn. With the emotional turn in geography, research has increasingly focused on the lived experience and the emotional and affective dimensions of space and place. However, the question often remains as to how to bring such research into an active learning environment that extends beyond the classroom. Instead of learning by doing, learning by feeling is presented as a new way of teaching emotional geographies. Student projects from two courses in landscape geography reveal how excursions into the affective landscape help students explore emotional geographies through more creative, reflective, affective, and active learning assessment strategies. Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: Two-Eyed Seeing as mentioned in this paper is a framework that calls for a weaving of perspectives to hold views of both Indigenous and Western knowledge simultaneously, and has been recognized as a valuable approach in Indigenous research but remains promising as a means to connect indigenous knowledge and epistemology to geography teaching practice.
Abstract: Addressing educational curricula and programs in post-secondary education for Reconciliation brings new opportunities and challenges for geography educators, including decolonizing and indigenizing their own teaching practices and perspectives. A team of geography educators, from vastly different geographies and contexts, explored their understandings and approaches to indigenization and found commonalities aligned with Two-Eyed Seeing, a framework that calls for a weaving of perspectives to hold views of both Indigenous and Western knowledge simultaneously. While originally applied in a teaching context, Two-Eyed Seeing is now recognized as a valuable approach in Indigenous research but remains promising as a means to connect indigenous knowledge and epistemology to geography teaching practice. A review of challenges in indigenization efforts in education indicates that Two-Eyed Seeing can address a number of pedagogical challenges, including reducing binary perspectives, providing a more holistic worldview, and creating a safe space for students. Realizing goals of reconciliation, decolonization, and indigenization requires contributions and efforts from across the geography education community, including from non-Indigenous actors who may not be active in the Indigenous Geographies space. Providing strategies and examples of approaches such as Two-Eyed Seeing is critical to support these educators and ensure the best learning opportunities for their students.
